You've seen it. I've seen it. Grandma Mildred has probably seen an episode or two. It's Dragon Ball Z, of course! (The Z, by the way, stands for nothing whatsoever--it's just there because it looks cool.) Dragon Ball Z is a series that everyone knows and most members of this site look back on fondly as the cornerstone of their childhood (or teenagerhood, or mid-20's-hood). This makes it a difficult series to offer an objective critical analysis for--but as some of you may know, I don't own a pair of nostalgia goggles, so this review isn't going to be sugarcoating anything. If you still have any kind of positive relationship with your inner child, leave now. __Writing:__ Let's face it. Dragon Ball Z isn't about the story. As long as there was some new bad guy for Goku to fight, all was well with the world. And while they weren't nearly as bad as they were in the original Dragon Ball, the series still has more plot holes than you can shake a Power Pole at. Like many marketable shows both then and now, more focus is placed on the characters than the events they're involved in--and boy oh boy, Dragon Ball Z has plenty of characters. From Appule to Zarbon, just about every archetype imaginable is covered, and while characters aren't devoid of depth, most of them are simple enough for viewers to find something to identify with in all of them. Oh, and let's not forget filler. I don't really mind it the first few times I watch a series, but the sheer volume of it in the first season makes it difficult to start re-watching this show from the beginning. __Art:__ As old as this series is by now, the artwork is, of course, a little dated. But that's not really an issue for me. Graphics, animation... DBZ is pretty average for its time all across the board. As would be expected, the artwork is more refined than the original Dragon Ball, but not as much so as GT. __Sound:__ Dragon Ball Z may well have more English dubs than any other anime in existence. The current one, however, and the one most are likely familiar with, is the FUNimation dub, which, while not the most faithful adaptation in the world, was a lot moreso than others from the period and still effectively maintained the spirit of the show. Free fun fact: Dragon Ball Z was the show which launched FUNimation as a licensing company. As for the Japanese dub... well, Goku sounds like a Japanese schoolgirl, and that was enough to turn me away from it. But it is, of course, more faithful, so the choice is yours. Dragon Ball Z is a series which I really feel never hit its mark musically. There are actually two complete scores for the series--the original Japanese score, which included tracks from the original Dragon Ball and used the same style of music and orchestration therefrom, and the heavy, "action-y" score by Bruce Faulconer for the early English adaptations of the show. The former is suited to the more laid-back scenes of the show, but I feel often falls short when the action inevitably begins, whereas the Faulconer score has the opposite problem: It just sounds silly hearing those heavy action sounds while someone frolics through a meadow. What really struck home were the soundtracks to many of the DBZ fighting games (the Budokai series, specifically), which had a unique combination of both these styles which I would have loved to hear in the show itself--but, oh well. One can dream. Bottom line, is Dragon Ball Z a good series? ...not really. Is it still fun and enjoyable? Sure. Hell, I must have seen the whole thing at least five times by now. Despite the glaring plotholes, mostly-static characters, and relatively linear plotline, it manages to maintain interest throughout, and while action for the sake of it isn't worth much, it pulls it off reasonably well. If you're one of the handful of people who has not seen this series, I would recommend it solely because an anime fan who has no experience with Dragon Ball Z is practically unheard of.

I started watching Dragon ball Z at a very young age and even when I was young I loved it. I grew up watching the ''my language's dub'' and fell in love with the show. Dragon ball Z is an epic anime with brilliant fight scene's and great characters. If you are looking for a great fighting anime look no further. ~~~__Story__~~~ Dragon ball Z is a story about a naive man named Goku trying to be come stronger but powerful villains stand in his way and try to take over the world kill him blah blah blah. That is the story in its simplest form. Now I will review the story. Dragon ball Z has emotional moments, funny moments, really cool fights, romance and the occasional plot twist. Dragon ball Z story is very enjoyable and will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat or cursing at your TV. The show has a lot of fights and they are amazing, it is what every one wants to see, super powerful beings kicking the crap out of each other. Dragon ball Z has quite a bit of humor as well example: Krillin (not being able to get girls or getting his but kicked all the time) Goku (Food humor and idiocy) Vegeta (Goku getting on his nerves). ~~~__Art__~~~ Dragon ball Z art is good but dated (but of course we are looking at a 1996 anime here) ~~~__Sound__~~~ I will review the sound in two sections Japanese Dub on the background music and the voice actors and then the English dub. ___Japanese Dub___ First I will start with the background music. The Japanese background music can fit the scenes very well but it sounds very old like a seventy's cheesy horror movie. What I like about the Japanese background music is in some scenes they don't add any background music whilst FUNimation's sound track have music in EVERY scene. What I don't like about the Japanese music is that it can get very annoying. ___English Dub___ I am reviewing the FUNimation's dub and not ocean dub or any other dub so this is purely based on FUNimations dub. Funimation's music fits in very well with the fight scenes and that is what I like about it, because it makes the fights more dramatic and cooler but when there is no fighting I hate FUNimation's music purely because it doesn't fit the scene's well. FUNimation has done a brilliant job when choosing their voice actors. Each character voice suits them really well. ~~~__Character__~~~ The characters in Dragon ball Z are truly unique. You have: __Goku__ the ''Naive Hero'' of the story, __Vegeta__ the short tempered bad ass, __Gohan__ the son of Goku. The characters all fall into place although there are some useless one's and it would not matter if they are there or not. Goku learns of Vegeta and Vegeta learns of Goku. They have such good characters and they are not your average heroes. ~~~__Enjoyment__~~~ Dragon ball Z is a very fun series very easy to get into so I can recommend this anime to anyone! ~~~__Overall__~~~ I would have to give it a 8/10 Happy Watching!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~__

That's for sure one of my favorite anime. When I was ten or eleven, after school, I ran towards home every day to get on time to watch an episode of DBZ. I could say it's intertwined with my childhood. My friends and I played pretending to be the characters; we collected toys and pictures. Anyways, I'm doing this review, especially for Naruto's fans and newer shounen that haven't watched this series. I've watched its sequel (DBS) and, after that, videos related to it, like reactions, reviews, news, and so forth. One thing has caught my attention, the commentary section on youtube. I know the internet can be hateful most of the time, but this was a little awkward for me. DBZ fans were saying trash about Naruto as if only for its existence Naruto would be offensive. Eventually, Naruto's fans got tired of this and trashed DBZ as well, consequently turning it into a fight of soccer team's fans. Without a doubt, DBZ is one of the inspirations for Naruto and newer shounen, so it has its merits. I think we have to accept that time has passed and, at least, for me feels good seeing a new generation have the same feelings and care for their own anime almost in the same way we did. I have to admit that I didn't watch many episodes of Naruto. I went until the episode of Zabuza on the bridge. Not because I didn't like it, but when Naruto got released in the open television, I wasn't that interested in anime, and I got into my actual vibe of watching short series afterward. The few episodes I've watched made me believe this series has the potential to be even better than DBZ. (it's only natural, doing something based on previous knowledge, one can understand what it's good and bad, what has worked or not about its predecessor.) Finally, the review. DBZ has outstanding animation for the time it was released and even for the current time. The transformations and power-ups are pleasant to see (Impossible to forget the first Super Saiyan transformation). Saying the characters' design is creative is an understatement. They are so different in color, size, shape. Akira Toriyama (its creator) flexes hugely on that; his creative mind is on a whole another level. I don't remember seeing that diversity in any anime I've watched. The sound is also a show for itself. Again, the transformations and fights. You feel the thunderous punches, the blows of energy, the landscape being destroyed. The sound is that good. The opening, oh god, the opening. An engaging rock style, I think you'll gonna listen to that every single episode. I remember two openings, one for Buu's saga and the other for Cell's. Maybe there are more, but I don't recall. Either way, the ones I remember are fantastic. The plot, well, it's not that good. Graeter fans try their hardest to fix it's holes, arguing the most bizarre things. It's an almost-300-eps anime, so it's impossible for it not to have flaws. I'm sure the same applies to Naruto. I don't see that as a problem since the story is engaging, the world-building is terrific, and the characters are interesting. DBZ, despite the natural violence of a 90's fighting shounen, it's a wholesome story in its core. You'll watch with a smile on your face most of the time. Before I forgot, shout out to the villains. Their motivation is not the brightest, no gray areas, but still, they are fantastic. One more thing, prepare for whole episodes of talking before the fight. The characters staring each other talking trash. Who watched Frieza`s saga knows that. rsrsrs. Don't be a crybaby about that. You can now watch multiples episodes at once; I had to watch it one episode a day (and no weekend episodes!). So, Naruto's fans (and other shounen's), please, give it a try. You won't regret it. And my DBZ fan's comrades, please, respect Naruto. Both can be good shows. Instead of maligning other's anime, invite their fans to share this amazing experience of watching DBZ.

Considering it is a continuation of an existing franchise, it won't be possible for me to evaluate it based on its own. I will use Japanese Terms mainly because I watched it mainly in Japanese. Whenever I know the English Terms, I will use them. Also American Dragon Ball Z is far more different than Dragon Ball Z in every other country which is another reason why this review is focusing on the Japanese version. Story Well, we are already in a territory that is up to interpretation and misconception. Most people view Dragon Ball as: Random Bad Guy appears, beats up everyone, protagonist gets a new power up, beats up enemy who tries to destroy the planet. Sadly they aren't far off. But we will get to that. Dragon Ball was about Goku discovering how vast the world is and discover his passion for fighting. Up to this point, Goku trained under various Martial Arts Masters, defeated an entire army as a kid, beat up a Demon King, surpassed GOD and became the strongest under the heaven. So how would Dragon Ball Z break the boundaries of previous Dragon Ball? By introducing Aliens... I know, that sounds stupid. The story was about mythological akin to Journey to the West and suddenly we are fighting aliens? This is one of the reasons some old Dragon Ball fans got alienated (pun intended). However, Dragon Ball Z has an ace up their sleeves: Saiyans. Saiyans are a race of aliens Goku belongs too. It works because up until now Goku was treated as an oddity in this world full of talking animals, demons, gods and shit with faces. It also introduced enemies that seem to have good reasons to be stronger than God as they know about themselves better than Goku and thus about their power. The Saiyans are a race of battle honed warriors that invade planets and sell them for profit. Back in the day, they valued members by their power. Weak ones are send to planets with no challenge as a baby even. Strong ones are treated like gods and get the best treatment. Right now there are just 4 remaining of the original full bloods including Goku. The weakest and thus a low class Saiyan Raditz can take on Piccolo and Goku simultaneously and beat them almost effortlessly. They couldn't beat him without any casualty which is Goku's death. Before his dead, Raditz would mention how there are 2 other Saiyans far stronger than himself that would come to defeat them. For that the remaining fighters on earth would train their hardest while the Dragon Balls would eventually be used to revive Goku who trained under the God of the World King Kai. King Kai, who trained Enma who judges who goes to heaven or hell, mentions that the Saiyans that come to earth even surpass him in power. This was a good way to show that these new threats are on a completely different league from Gods and can even destroy planets (at least Vegeta). We would eventually see that in action as Nappa, the weaker of the two, manage to survive 2 suicide moves by characters trained by God and killed Piccolo with just one attack. It raised the tension since with Piccolo's death nobody can be revived from the Dragon Balls... tho the arc also gave hints of another set of DBs so it doesn't mean too much. Nappa would eventually be defeated and we would get the showdown between Goku and the Elite Warrior Vegeta. Vegeta mentioned that Goku could never beat him simply because of their genetics. And even with training from Gods, the Kaioken and Genkidama aka Spirit Bomb, Goku was unable to beat Vegeta. Vegeta was a very talented fighter, knows to control the Oozaru and can use it without full moon. It was a team effort of Gohan, Krillin, Yajirobe and Goku that managed to fend him off. Sadly this was the best Dragon Ball Z had to offer. The Saiyan Saga in terms of storytelling and staying true to the original end here. From here on we enter the Frieza Saga which is about Krillin, Gohan and Bulma flying to the Planet God was born in, Namek, and use their Dragon Balls to revive their comrades. On paper that sounds great. A space adventure is what we needed and the anime does flesh it out a little more. Sadly Namek is one of the most boring locations ever. It's just a glorified battle field. There are 3 suns so the author has never to draw nighttime unless the Dragon appears. The anime filler tries to flesh it out a bit, but considering how dragged out this arc is it just made it worse. Frieza and his army for which Vegeta worked for invaded the planet to get the Dragon Balls for themselves. Frieza is an imposing villain. A one dimensional evil bad guy with no explanation given to make us understand why he is how he is. He destroyed the Saiyan homeworld, Planet Vegeta. King Kai shit his pants. He has various forms each exponentially increasing his power. Non of his underlings dare to oppose him. And Vegeta himself would arrive also for the hunt. Thus there is a conflict between 3 groups trying to first get the Dragon Balls. The Dragon Team, Vegeta and Frieza's army. Frieza's army despite their number would be at a disadvantage without their radar, but their number and strength make them terrifying. Vegeta can sense power and uses his ability to alter his ki to hide. Slowly gathering the balls. The Dragon Team are the weakest but they have a Radar to guarantee they find what they are looking for. The Dragon Team and Vegeta would team up to increase their chances for success and only manage to bring Piccolo back before the Dragon disappears. They had no choice to fight Frieza. One of the longest fights. The Namek Saga would not be the originator of what we know as power creep but this is where it escalates. And probably where some old fans of Dragon Ball just gave up. Saiyans get stronger as they fight and gain other passive power ups by almost drying and being revived. This devalues Goku's past accomplishment since just losing makes him stronger as he survives. Thus making training trivial. Piccolo who had been outclassed by now gets a free exponential power up by fusing with another Namekian. This puts him about Second Form Frieza level who was already more than twice as strong as Vegeta in his Oozaru form on earth in his First Form. Needless to say, many characters people loved in the past would get obsolete. There can't be any logical reason that someone like Tien or Yamcha could fight someone on Frieza's tier regardless how much they train. At least logically they shouldn't. Goku would eventually come to terms with his Saiyan heritage in this arc somewhat and that was needed to beat Frieza. All his moves, strategy and experience were useless against Frieza. The bond of friendship and unity the Genkidama failed. It was Goku giving in his anger and fighting thirst that allowed him to reach Super Saiyan. A form teased throughout the arc and the reason Frieza was scared of them in the first place. Now, with surpassing Gods and beating what was considered the strongest being in the Universe. There is no way you can go on, right? Nope. Remember the army Goku defeated when he was like 12? There is that one old dude who collected data up to the Saiyan Saga and created Artificial Human, Cyborgs or Androids that can be on par or even surpass a Super Saiyan. It is when power creep makes no sense. Suddenly the form that appears once per 1000 years and hard to archive form is obtained by all the surviving Super Saiyan. All non-Saiyan became irrelevant, including Piccolo who got 1 more power up that put him temporary above the Saiyans. Cell would appear and explain his entire plan about absorbing everyone to get stronger. Cell is one of the characters excused for his strength with being a patch work of the, at the time, strongest fighters and their techniques. But Cell also brought other repeating things to the story. - fights have the same structure. Its always one sided until someone else gets a power up and then turns the tables. There are very few even fights and most aren't memorable despite the impressive choreography. - power creep: the power jumps are too high. Zenkais, Super Saiyan forms and Cell's new forms keep increasing the power tier exponentially. A dominating fighter's punch would stop facing the opponent once he would transform once. - Enemies would start absorbing to get stronger, regenerate or learn moves just looking. Thus each new enemy would usually make previous enemies forgettable. The only highlight was Goku passing the torch as the main character to Gohan and giving us a good finale. Sadly the final arc would ruin it. I skipped the Garlic Jr arc since it doesn't do much and is confusing if you didn't watch the Garlic Jr Movie. An arc that requires you to watch a movie at a certain point is not really a good way to make a story arc. There is also the Otherworld Tournament. It's just a fun tournament where the winner would get trained by the Grand Kai, the boss of King Kai. Goku would have to fight many legendary fighters like him who died protecting their planet. If you like OG Dragon Ball Tournaments, you may enjoy this one too. The final arc is what many people think about Dragon Ball Z. Random bad guy appears, awakens some pink demon who wants to destroy the world, characters get power ups that mean nothing because the villain transforms too and at the end they combine everything to beat the bad guy. The Boo Saga is a terrible way to end Dragon Ball Z which is why it left many fans dissatisfied. Any prior arc had a great way to conclude it, but an arc that didn't even matter and felt out of place was the finale. Gohan and Videl who were introduced as the main characters of that arc were shafted by their dads and Vegeta. Yes, Mr Satan a comic relief character shafted Gohan and Videl who had the most potential in this arc. I don't like to talk about art. But Dragon Ball is visually pleasing. But the art quality doesn't speak much about the action. Since even badly animated shows can have engaging fights and sometimes are better. OG Dragon Balls fans will be disappointed by the lack of martial art style fights. The show ended up with characters yelling, randomly punching each other and fight like its a video game. Power creep made fights so one sided, that strategy, speed and smarts mean jack shit. Unless you are even in power. So someone like Roshi could never beat Puipui. Not even with the Mafuba (ehem, Dragon Ball Super...). But in terms of spectacle and iconic moments Dragon Ball Z scores high here. Sound is also not something I care much about. Music is used fine I guess and makes fights enjoyable. I think many anime have really good soundtrack enough to not feel it being significant. Opening of Z is great. Chala Head Chala is one of the best Dragon Ball openings next to Dan Dan from Dragon Ball GT. The Final Opening is meh and also false advertisement. Characters Goku is now a pretty serious guy. Finally a father of two children. He was becoming more human in OG Dragon Ball by sparing lives. In Z he would be confronted with his sudden origin, having a brother opposite to him and having to accept what he is. That would eventually give him the means to obtain the power no normal Saiyan could archive: Super Saiyan. After his character arc was over, he would just show to be a character that calls the shots. Do most decision making on how to handle threats. Put the things he learned from his masters to good use to train his son and Master Super Saiyan before obtaining levels far above. While he does do stupid decisions, they were always with good intend... unlike... Vegeta... It's the series where he gets introduced. Vegeta would go through several character arcs. He is shown to be confident and in control in the Saiyan Saga. The Frieza Saga he is the opposite where he lurks around looking for opportunity to get what he wants. While being confident, his control because of the lower power level compared to Frieza and his elites clash here. In the Cell Saga after obtaining the Super Saiyan form the power went over his head. His interactions with his son also gave him some interesting character development. While Vegeta was unbearable, that character arc indeed made him what people like about Vegeta. Lastly while the Boo Saga was a train wreak, he was one of the highlights. He would try to take responsibility for his actions, reflect and accept that Goku is indeed better than him bringing his character full circle (until Dragon Ball Super came and ruined it OR Toriyama if you read the inferior manga). Piccolo went from the Demon King we knew and loved to Gohan's mentor. Originally intended to be a mean to stop the Saiyans, Piccolo would also grow an attachment to Gohan and sacrifice his life to protect him. It felt natural that he would want to fight Frieza later on and while he felt like an afterthought who was just there to get a fight aka filler, it was neat to see. In the Cell Saga Piccolo would get just one more character moment where he finally decides to become one with God. After that he would be completely irrelevant. He would mentor Goten and Trunks for the Fusion Dance, but most of the Boo Saga was Piccolo just being comic relief. Krillin was just there the entire series. He did help a few times but rarely managed to do anything relevant after the Saiyan Saga. He showed courage and got a wife. The other Z fighters from OG Dragon Ball were just an afterthought too. Power creep made Chaotzu, Yajirobe, Tien and Yamcha completely irrelevant. Tien only showed guts by holding back Cell. He would always appear and do Kikoho then disappear from the plot. Yamcha became a running joke just from his lost against Saiyamen. And Chaotzu nobody remembers. Yajirobe managed to help against Vegeta, but disappeared after that. Bulma is pretty much comic relief. All female characters in the Dragon Ball franchise are violent, aggressive and bossy, only existing for comic relief including Android 18. Toriyama can only write that kind of character and they don't add anything to the plot. Bulma in the original was actually moving the plot and did shit. In Z she just flies to Namek and complains. The only redeeming factor is her relationship with Vegeta sprouting in the Cell arc. Something Kai and the manga failed to do. She is moreso a plot device since she is an inventor. But she doesn't have the presents other inventors in anime have with plot continuaty have and besides the Dragon Radar most are pointless. I honestly believe her father did more shit and he is just a side character. He build a spaceship that even Goku can use and he turned it into a training room. He also helped making Android 16 functionable. Gohan is pretty much a secondary main lead... at least intended to be. As Goku's son and being a half Saiyan, he was introduced as a character with very high potential and means to stop the Saiyans. He gets random rage boosts that allow him temporary to get an advantage over stronger opponents. But it is done in a way he doesn't feel like a gary stu since he lacks experience and the power up doesn't manage to shift the tiles in battle. Eventually Goku would train him proper and he would be the first to surpass Super Saiyan the way it meant to be. That moment finally being able to use his full power properly and him growing up to become independent is what made many like Gohan. Sadly by the time of the Boo Saga he would be nerved and get another plot induced power up that end up doing nothing. Toriyama must have given up on him being unable to write anything different that a character like Goku. A complete waste for those who got invested. Frieza is one of the most beloved anime villains. Despite being one dimensional evil bad guy, the way he represents himself made him beloved. Just on his introduction without him doing anything he made everyone shit their pants. He could kill almost anyone with the move of his finger and even the last villain that survived a massive ass whooping didn't even consider challenging him head on. Frieza managed to survive the strongest moves and defeated the mightiest fighters with ease. Even the gods were scared off him. And as the killer of the Saiyans, the viewers really wanted Goku to be the one defeating him. Frieza was also a good villain to push Goku far above his own morals and force him to obtain Super Saiyan at the end. Sadly he would eventually be ruined in the next arc and other media, but in the Frieza Saga he is the villain many love to hate. Besides Cell the Androids are awful antagonist. Overpowered for no good reason and they are pretty forgettable. Tho many remember 18 because she humiliated Vegeta, but after that and being a female character she would end up like a house wife and retire from fighting. Even in the Cell arc she was just a damsel in distress, completely useless. She had only 1 good moment and that's it. Android 16 only existed as a plot device for Gohan to get serious. Cell started off as a mysterious antagonist who would then just infodumb everything. He was interesting as he is a patchwork of other fighters. Using the knowledge of others to his advantage and their moves. Eventually he would absorb 17 and become one of the ugliest beings ever. And all we remember of that form is him getting his ass kicked by Vegeta to the point Vegeta had to suggest to absorb 18. After absorbing 18 Cell lost everything that made him special. There was no motivation left for him since he reached his life goal and all he could do is test his new power. Sadly we need a villain that is worth killing, so Cell threatened to destroy earth if nobody fights him. He would eventually act like Vegeta and Frieza, about to destroy the planet when packed to a corner. Mr Satan started off as a boring comic relief character with a one not joke. In the Boo Saga his character arc with Boo is what made him actually funny. And he would come in clutch defeating Boo at the end. Fat Boo aka Majin Boo aka. Mr Boo started off as a mindless monster with a child's innocent. He liked killing and eating people. After meeting Mr Satan, he would start to respect others' lives and other good things. But since we need a badguy to beat, his body would span an evil side who absorbs him and becomes the new villain. Super Boo who is also just referred as Majin Boo is basically a parody of Cell. Like Cell and Fat Boo he can regenerate. He basically has all of Boo's abilities. Can also absorb others to gain their skills, knowledge etc. He rather feels like a filler opponent since all fights against him lead to nowhere. Eventually after the fat Boo gets freed he turns into a small Majin Boo who is just a random psychopath and becomes stronger. Because absorbing Kaioshin makes him weaker. Goten, Kid Trunks and Gotenks are basically filler character. They only parody the accomplishment of their dads and otherwise don't add anything to the plot. You can take them out of the plot and miss nothing of importance. Closing words Dragon Ball Z is a spectacle to watch but it can get really repetitive if you watched other fighting shonen. Most characters have the same skills and fighting style. There is no martial arts and strategy doesn't matter. The power jumps are illogical compared to previous Dragon Ball and can "alienate" old fans. It seems like stuff gets retconned or randomly pulled out of Toriyama's ass like Dabura being stronger than Cell for some reason and Puipui being 1000 stronger than Frieza because the Kaioshin shit his pants. Beloved old characters have been almost rendered useless and it became the Saiyan show. Every arc since the Frieza Saga needs a new Super Saiyan or a power surpassing it like Fusion and potential unlocked. The story arcs get progressively worse and several characters get shafted like Gotenks, Piccolo and Gohan. Not to mention nobody remembering the Mafuba in an arc around a demon that can only be stopped if somebody seals him away. And for the love of god, don't watch any Dragon Ball expecting a well-written female character. Regardless the highlights are great and the action is similar to fastfood. But most fights don't have too much rewatch value or won't be remembered like in other shows with less detailed choreography.

Where do I even begin? One of the most iconic animes in the world, the godfather of shounen, the animanga that paved the way for countless of animangas after it. It's regarded by many as one of the best animes of all time, garnering millions if not billions of fans across the world. It's also regarded as among one of the worst animes of all time. It's plot is often regarded as nonsensical and the story has nothing of value other than extremely buff men punching each other. It's usually seen as either one of the best animes ever, or one of the worst. Does it truly live up to the hype? Or is it really nothing more than a bunch of buff man yelling and throwing fists? img100%(https://i.postimg.cc/Dzf7vJHz/ORANGE-Line.gif) #~~~__Characters__~~~ _Protagonist_ - Goku makes for an amazing protagonist who just explodes with personality. Despite being the baseline for most modern shonen protagonists, Goku is still one of the most unique among them. While other protagonists are extremely heroic and fight for the greater good, Goku is a warrior to his core who's main motivation isn't fighting for justice and the greater good, but fighting the strongest people he can find and push himself to the limits. Goku can be extremely selfish throughout the series and that's what makes him so interesting. He's not some Superman that the dub of the show tried to make him out to be. He's someone who will put other in dangers just so he can push himself to the limits. He's a lovable oaf that you can't help but root for and has truly cemented himself as a timeliness protagonist. ~~~img420(https://media.tenor.com/d0RZcY4hz1cAAAAC/dragon-ball-z-gokou.gif)~~~ _Side Characters_ - One of the weaker aspects of the show definitely has to be the side characters. Don't get me wrong, there are great characters like Trunks, Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo, but other than them everyone else tends to not really do a whole much in the series. Chichi is just there to yell at Gohan to do homework, Bulma is there to just give the Z fighters cool devices, Roshi hardly exists to do anything outside of pervert jokes, and Goten and kid Trunks serve to do nothing more than fuse with each other and fight Super Buu. The main problem with the cast is they don't really get to do much without Goku (an exception is in the Cell arc and half of Namek). I still love the cast however as they're all extremely loveable with their own personalities. 30 years later and they're still endearing as ever and I simply wish Toriyama wrote more for them so that I could love them more. ~~~img420(https://i.pinimg.com/originals/85/08/c6/8508c6822e22f3a95f84431372a942fb.gif) ~~~ img100%(https://i.postimg.cc/Dzf7vJHz/ORANGE-Line.gif) #__~~~Art/Animation~~~__ The art throughout the series is nothing short of FANTASTIC. It evolves and changes over the course of the series, but every single art style in each era looks absolutely mesmerizing. The art starts out a lot more simple in Saiyan saga and ends up a lot more detailed by the time the Buu saga comes around. Each art style has its own artistic merit and works in different ways. ~~~img220(https://ancdn.fancaps.net/3282336.jpg) img220(https://ancdn.fancaps.net/3731040.jpg)~~~ The animation is also amazing. While it can be a little repetitive sometimes, It has tons of fluid moments that are showstopping.Dragon Ball Z is where household names like Naotoshi Shida and Todayoshi Yamamuro made their marks in the industry. Todayoshi Yamamuro: ~~~webm(https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/ac70393f61c93169d788b41c54e604df.mp4)~~~ Naotoshi Shida: ~~~webm(https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/0ce981f3f925602942068646e143bbef.mp4)~~~ There was also tons of other talented animators on the show ~~~img37%(https://media.tenor.com/jHJ9Vd8du7YAAAAd/dragon-ball-z-goku.gif) img49%(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/AcceptableRecentAsianelephant-max-1mb.gif)~~~ While the show could look a bit wonky every now and then, the highs are __EXTREMELY__ high and the show manages to look pretty great for a weekly show in the 90s. img100%(https://i.postimg.cc/Dzf7vJHz/ORANGE-Line.gif) #~~~____Plot/Narrative____~~~ _Saiyan Saga_ - I'll be in the extreme minority here but I am not a fan of the Saiyan saga. I'll start off positive with things it does right. I think the introduction into it with a grown adult Goku with his son Gohan is pretty sweet and lets us know off the bat that some years have passed since Dragon Ball. I also enjoyed the absolute bomb of a drop Raditz was as an antagonist. His introduction completely flipped the status quo on its own. Goku has a brother? Goku is an ALIEN? This opened massive doors for the franchise and uses this introduction as its first stepping stone. I also enjoyed Vegeta as an antagonist a ton as he had such a swagger to him. His design making him so small with such a large ego was a very great choice by Toriyama. Now unfortunately I'll have to go into the negatives. The arc structure is easily the weakest one to me. It's basically just Z fighters training and then proceeding to get beat up by the main bad guy and having to wait for Goku to return. While there are solid moments in the arc, the arc doesn't become anything of note to me until Goku vs Vegeta, the literal climax/conclusion of the arc. It's very boring having to sit through Tien jobbing against Nappa, and Chiaotzu having a very non emotional sacrifice to me. The arc finally gets going to me however when the main stars of the saga finally come head to head. ~~~img220(https://i.pinimg.com/originals/78/aa/b8/78aab854d6032bcf5361269d5df555d5.gif) ~~~ The fight is extremely brutal and pulls no punches. Goku and Vegeta have an interesting dynamic of one coming from a bloodline of royalty, destined for greatness! The other came from a family who's nothing of real note and was born with a mere power level of 2. Despite their differences in upbringings, they still clash head on as equals. ~~~img40%(https://images.gr-assets.com/hostedimages/1629017465ra/31778791.gif) img47%(https://i.makeagif.com/media/9-13-2015/eTmRUn.gif)~~~ The fight drags on and it _FEELS_ bloody and no holds barred. Seeing everyone struggle in the fight and Yajirobe actually contributing a ton and cutting off Great Ape Vegeta's tail was a blast to watch. I of course can't forget about the __ ICONIC__ Kaioken Kamehameha vs Galick Gun ~~~img420(https://media.tenor.com/F_npzZCOBjEAAAAC/goku-kaioken.gif)~~~ The way vegeta ends up getting defeated is pretty stupid however with Gohan going great ape and falling on top of him in a fit of rage. I do enjoy Goku begging Krillin to keep Vegeta alive however not because he thinks Vegeta will become a good person, but so he can fight him again and defeat him in a 1v1. The arc is overall not that great to me but the final fight is pretty good. _Namek Saga_ - The Namek saga starts off extremely dire, yet hopeful. Majority of the Z Fighters are dead, yet all hope isn't loss. With the introduction of Piccolo being a Namekian, the gang heads off to planet Namek to find the Namekian dragon balls. I think the premise is absolutely great and the Namek saga probably has one of, if not the most best story structures in the show. With Goku having to recover, we're able to get Krillin and Gohan taking over as the main characters for a good portion of Namek. They hold the position great as they bounce off of eachother pretty nicely. We're soon introduce to our main villain very early. The most iconic villain in the entire series, Frieza. ~~~img420(https://i.pinimg.com/564x/d2/ee/a6/d2eea68be99286a087ff2dca43de5123.jpg)~~~ Frieza makes his mark extremely quick by ordering his minions to kill an innocent Namekian child. Knowing that this galactical tyrant is also on the look for the dragon balls, it makes the stakes much higher than they've even been before. Vegeta also returns in the arc looking for the dragon balls too. This makes this into a death game of cat and mouse with Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin having to sneak under Frieza's nose and reach the Dragon Balls before he does. The arc keeps you engaged at all time because the main characters simply can't go in and guns blasting, they have to think extremely carefully as their lives and the z fighters lives are all on the line. The arc has some solid side villains as well, the most notable being the Ginyu force. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/HatefulCavernousAffenpinscher-max-1mb.gif)~~~ The force (Outside of Guldo really) is just a huge blast to watch. They all have interesting designs, great fights, and a banger theme song. The arc has some pretty nice fights throughout the saga but the real highlight of the saga is Goku vs Frieza, the final brawl. Before the fight truly starts off, we're treated to a nice heart to heart with Goku and Vegeta, with Vegeta dying, crying, and begging for Goku to avenge the Saiyan race. Goku accepts this and for the first time, we see Goku, or rather Kakarot, accept his Saiyan heritage. It's one of the most heartfelt moments in the saga as we saw Vegeta, the man who looked down on Goku as an inferior warrior, turn to Goku and have to beg him to avenge his pride, and his race. The Goku vs Frieza fight has some pretty nice action and solid animation. It unfortunately peaks at Base Goku vs Final form frieza as the fight feels a lot more even at that point. Goku pulls out the iconic spirit bomb for the first time and it's such a great scene. Seeing Goku gather life energy from the entire planet and seeing the spirit bomb go from a small orb in the Saiyan saga into the huge ball here. The fight at this point feels extremely intense and you can't help but be constantly drawn in with all the different tactics Goku has to use just to keep up with Frieza. The climax doesn't come until the Spirit Bomb fails however, and results in frieza killing Krillin. It's one of the most horrifying deaths in the series as Goku has to simply stand there and watch powerless. With the Spirit Bomb failing, Piccolo injured, and all hope is lost, we're treated to one of the most Iconic things in the series. The legendary Super Saiyan. ~~~img36%(https://gifdb.com/images/file/goku-transforms-into-super-saiyan-4gar3b10etf4wzgw.gif) img49%(https://img1.ak.crunchyroll.com/i/spire3/5fe36265d41408f4f778af0d0f81c8231583799203_full.png)~~~ This transformation changed the game not only for Dragon Ball Z, but for the entire anime medium as a WHOLE. Your favorite transformation is most likely inspired by Super Saiyan. It's impact 30 years later is still felt and for good reason. The Super Saiyan was nothing more than a mystery as Vegeta alluded towards it the entire arc, we simply thought it was a powerbuff like a zenkai boost. It was however so much more and while it's design is pretty simple nowadays, it works amazingly well. Less is sometimes more. Super Saiyan itself is an amazing transformation, but unfortunately the fight starts to dip in quality. There are some good animation every now and then, but as a whole the animation quality starts to dip. We also can't talk about Super Saiyan Goku vs Frieza without talking about pacing. The 5 minute meme is a meme done to death but it holds weight in its criticism. The fight drags on LONG. Like, it's the longest fight in anime history LONG. It quite frankly drags out longer than it has to, but there's still a lot of cool lines to kindaaaaaaaa make it up. The fight though I will say has one of my favorite conclusions in anime. Goku's "YOU FOOL" is so fantastic and his sorrowful face followed by it looks incredible. ~~~img220(https://media.tenor.com/RBbmXG9DmZwAAAAC/you-fool-dragon-ball.gif) img220(https://i.imgur.com/DQ3aw0g.png)~~~ Overall, the Namek saga is a great high stakes arc that I can't help but enjoy. It is dragged down a bit with the second half of Frieza vs Goku, but it still changed the game massively and you can't help but respect it even with its share of flaws. _Cell Saga_ - This arc is a mixed bag for me. It's very nonsensical a good portion of the time and the cracks of Toriyama's winging it with his writing shows very hard. Yet it also has some of the highest highs in the entire series. Trunks is a very much welcome addition to the cast and easily has the most raw introductions in the entire series that has yet to be topped even remotely. Sorry Ultimate Gohan, but this is a REAL entrance. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/PastLavishFoxterrier-size_restricted.gif)~~~ The main villains of the arc are pretty good but I won't lie are a bit underwhelming compared to Frieza. 19 and 20 are literal whatever characters, Android 17 and 18 are pretty great and are my favorite in the arc, Perfect Cell is also a good villain but he's definitely no Frieza. The plot is pretty much always engaging but even for Dragon Ball standards it can get convoluted for zero reason. We go through 3 different sets of villain and our final villain has to go through 3 seperate forms until we FINALLY reach our main antagonist for the show. It's still pretty nice however as this arc actually gives a lot of shine to characters other than Goku. Trunks of course is a very vital character to the saga and is the reason the Z fighters survive the attack from the androids, Vegeta finally achieves the Super Saiyan transformation and oh boy does he add such finesse to it. ~~~img420(https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d9/2e/49/d92e49a274c8ec6e320f4c4702602e0c.gif)~~~ Though the real star of the saga is no one other than Son Gohan himself. ~~~img420(https://i.pinimg.com/564x/de/7f/ef/de7fef7e5ec222d217cdd240c4fa2348.jpg) ~~~ This is the arc where all of the foreshadowing to Gohan's true power finally pays off. He slowly is able to hold his own throughout the Saiyan Saga and Namek saga, but the Cell saga is where he's able to really come into his own and carry the torch from Goku. While the Gohan vs Cell fight isn't nearly as well choreographed and animated as the Goku vs Cell fight, it's a lot better narratively. Gohan's refusal to kill Cell leads to the Z Fighters getting harmed and nearly killed. Gohan has to try and figure out if he can compromise his morals for the greater good and save the Earth. It's only then where Android's 16 head comes out of nowhere to talk to him. These characters have never interacted once in the entire saga, yet they have one of the most heartfelt conversations. Android 16 telling Gohan that it's okay to let go, and fight for whats right. Some people simply can't be reasoned with and fighting to protect what you love doesn't make you a bad person. It's a powerful message that speaks not only to Gohan, but us as the audience. Android 16 proceeds to get stepped on and crushed by cell, leading Gohan to lose it entirely. Leading to one of the most beautiful transformations in anime history. ~~~youtube(https://youtu.be/iZVJq_6_aP4) ~~~ Everything from the music, to the roar, to the visual of the bird is all just so perfect. Unmei No Hi makes an already incredible scene and makes it even more perfect. Gohan's transformation from boy to man is such a great journey to see as we've been there with him since day one. Even though he's stepped up to finally truly fight Cell, his recklessness and cockiness ends up to Cell almost destroying the World. With everything lost, our hero Goku has one last idea. A last resort. He decides to sacrifice himself to save his friends and planet. It's such an emotional scene as we see Goku give one final goodbye to all his friends. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/EuphoricImpeccableDinosaur-max-1mb.gif) ~~~ Just as he heads off he gives one final message to Gohan. a "Good job son". Goku in the moment has no worries, he simply makes peace with the situation he's in and accepts it, as the most calm as he's ever been. It's a real tearjerker and I love everything about it from it's music to the voice acting. Unfortunately though, Cell manages to come back. I don't think it takes away from the weight of Goku's sacrifice as it's still emotional either way. Cell's sacrifice also gives us one of the best attack in the series. The Father-Son Kamehameha. ~~~ img420(https://media.tenor.com/YKQmr27mwUgAAAAC/gohan-goku.gif)~~~ It's one of the best moments in the series as it represents so well how Goku is passing the torch to Gohan, and giving him one final push to become Earth's new protector. With Cell finally defeated, the arc fantastically wraps up in its conclusion with Goku dead, and Gohan as the new savior and protector. The Cell saga could've been structured and planned out a bit better, but it's still such a great watch with a lot of high moments that defined the series. It definitely has glaring flaws, but I think the clear enjoyment and passion Toriyama had when creating the arc was was able to make it work well and persevere through its issues. Buu Saga - This might be another uncontroversial opinion, but I really fucking love Buu saga. As in, It's my favorite Dragon Ball Z saga love. Does it have ton of issues? Yea. Is still one of the most fun Dragon Ball arcs since the original Dragon Ball? Extremely yes. The arc kicks off with a new opening, that lets us know that Gohan is indeed Earth's newest protector and savior. ~~~youtube(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsBaC3_S-As) ~~~ We gotta power has so much energy to it and is just an all around great opening. Seeing old faces and new ones is a pretty good sight to see. The saga kicks off with Gohan going to highschool, and while it doesn't contribute much to the overall saga's plot, it's still a great watch and a nice slice of life bit. Trunks and Goten are our newest additions to the Z fighters and they're not given the most depth ever but are still a blast to watch as they conspire and do their silly little shticks. The Saga doesn't really get going until we get to the World Tournament arc, and it's a pretty solid arc. Pretty much my least favorite arc in the entire saga but it still does it job fine enough and seeing Goten and Trunks do their shenanigans is pretty funny. I think the real thing that stuck with me though in the arc was Goku's return to earth and meeting Goten for the first time. It's such an incredibly emotional moment that still manages to get me every single time even today. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/OddballFlickeringBrant-max-1mb.gif)~~~ After the World tournament arc we're finally treated to the amazing rematch of Majin Vegeta vs Super Saiyan 2 Goku. It's a hyped up fight that has been anticipated since the Saiyan saga and oh boy is it worth it. It's a fight that drags on and is just as brutal as their initial match. ~~~img420(https://media.tenor.com/w4Yj6wxhu0wAAAAC/dragonball-vegeta.gif)~~~ The fight ends up leading to our main villain of the story who you can guess, his name by the name of the saga. Majin Buu is probably my favorite villain in the series besides Frieza. Nearly all his forms have a great personality outside of Buuhan who's kinda lame and a poor man's Perfect Cell. Fat Buu comes into the scene bursting with his child like personality. He absolutely demolishes Majin Vegeta, so what does Vegeta do? The only thing he can do. In one last ditch effort, Vegeta decides to sacrifice himself, his final atonement. ~~~img75%(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/GlaringWateryCurassow-size_restricted.gif)~~~ It's a beautiful scene that serves as a nice prologue to the conclusion of Vegeta's character arc. There's a reason why this is such a beloved scene for Vegeta, and for good reason. Never in a million years would anyone imagine Vegeta sacrificing himself, but he does it because he has a family who he loves and wants to protect. The saga after the introduction of Buu introduces some pretty cool things including the concept of fusions and Super Saiyan 3. Both of these are such great addition to Dragon ball and just feel like so much god damn fun. I do think one of the biggest weaknesses about the Buu saga has to be Gohan though. In the Cell saga he's left as Earth's protector and then immediately in the Buu saga, he instantly gets relegated to nothing more than a side character quickly. He gets his Ultimate Gohan form and it seems like he'll be able to defeat Buu and become the savior of Earth like he was meant to be, but he instantly fumbles and ends up dying when Buu destroys the planet. It's just such a shame because Gohan is a pretty great character who I think deserved to get better treatment than he did in the Buu saga. One of the things I love most about Buu saga on the other hand, easily has to be the final showdown. The Goku/Vegeta vs Kid Buu has to be one of the best animated fights in the entire series. Vegeta's "You are number one" moment is truly spectacular as for the entire series, we've seen him in a rivalry with Goku, but being a changed person, he finally admits Goku is in a class and realm of his own. ~~~img420(https://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-qdcEVR4zQMnbOhg0-9rC7Ew-t500x500.jpg) ~~~ The fight proceeds to end with what I think is the definitive best final attack in the entire series. One last Spirit bomb. ~~~img37%(https://media.tenor.com/u9yutJYUsv8AAAAC/send-energy-sending.gif) img49%(https://media.tenor.com/5Y_-b8miAtAAAAAC/spirit-giving-go.gif)~~~ Seeing everyone on planet earth, including both old friends and new helping Goku makes this ending feel so powerful. With everyone giving Goku his energy, Goku launches his final attack against a main antagonist of the series. As he deals the final finishing blow, he uses the last Dragon Ball wish, wishing for Kid Buu to come back as strong as he was, except good so that they can fight again. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/CalmGlitteringLangur-size_restricted.gif)~~~ The reason I love this scene so much is because even with all Buu has done, Goku can't help but only thinking of wanting to fight him again in another life. Even through thick and thin, through 286 episodes, Goku is still Goku. He's still just a man looking for a great fight. And it's a beautiful conclusion to what I consider my favorite arc. ~~~img420(https://media.tenor.com/9oTfd8We_7kAAAAC/son-goku-goku.gif)~~~ img100%(https://i.postimg.cc/Dzf7vJHz/ORANGE-Line.gif) #~~~__Conclusion__~~~ I think Dragon Ball is a show with a ton of flaws and it isn't the most deep anime ever. It's pacing can be kinda bad and the story can become pretty nonsensical at times. Yet even with all that, I just couldn't help but falling in love with it. This is a series where you can tell the mangaka has so much fun writing it and it's characters and it's constantly beaming through the story. The music, the action, and the animation are all so beautiful to me. Is it the holy grail of anime? Perhaps not. It's still however just a great show that feels pretty genuine and has clear heart in it. The anime landscape would be so much different in void of it and I think I'd also be a lot different as I met a ton of friends through Dragon Ball. After 30 years and going, I still am proudly to say, Dragon Ball does indeed live up to the hype. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/DarlingEnragedAlbatross-max-1mb.gif) ~~~

~~~__Introdução:__ A evolução de Goku em Dragon Ball Z é uma das mais _icônicas_ e _influentes_ da história dos animes e mangás. A seguir, farei um review sobre sua jornada ao longo das diversas sagas, desde a saga Saiyajin até a saga Majin Boo, com foco em sua _evolução de personalidade_. Está review foi inspirada em um vídeo do canal "Orgulho Saiyajin" por favor _confira o vídeo dele_. (Vídeo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNDv3U0bSy0) __Saga Saiyajin:__ Na saga Saiyajin, Goku é apresentado como um personagem _forte e habilidoso_ em artes marciais, mas também _inocente e ingênuo_ em relação a questões mais complexas. Ele é apresentado como um pai amoroso para seu filho Gohan, mas também como alguém que tem _dificuldade em lidar com as emoções_ de outras pessoas. Goku passa por uma _grande transformação_ durante essa saga. Ele descobre que é um Saiyajin e, portanto, um alienígena, o que o leva a questionar sua própria _identidade e propósito_. Ele luta com força contra Nappa e Vegeta, mas é quase derrotado por este último e sendo muito ferido na batalha. No entanto, passa a enxergar a vida de uma maneira _mais madura_. __Saga Freeza:__ Na saga Freeza, Goku é apresentado como um personagem muito mais _sério e focado_ em sua missão. Ele treina intensamente em sua nave para aprimorar suas habilidades e se preparar para a batalha contra o tirano Freeza. Durante essa saga, Goku se torna muito mais _ciente do mundo ao seu redor_ e dos perigos que ameaçam sua família e amigos. Goku passa por uma mudança significativa em sua personalidade durante essa saga. Ele se torna mais _confiante_ em suas habilidades e _menos hesitante_ em enfrentar seus inimigos. No entanto, ele também desenvolve uma atitude mais _pacifica_ em relação à vida, o que é evidente quando ele se recusa a matar Freeza mesmo depois de derrotá-lo. Mesmo assim, Freeza acaba sendo uma pessoa má até o "fim" de sua vida, assim fazendo Goku perceber que _existem inimigos que não podem mudar_ assim como Freeza. __Saga Cell:__ Na saga Cell, Goku é apresentado como um personagem mais _"relaxado e despreocupado"_. Ele treina Gohan para se tornar um guerreiro mais forte e assume um papel secundário na batalha contra o andróide Cell. Durante essa saga, Goku começa a perceber que ele _não é mais o guerreiro mais forte do universo_ e que outros personagens, como Vegeta e Gohan, estão se tornando mais poderosos. Goku passa por uma transformação significativa em sua personalidade durante essa saga. Ele se torna muito mais _preocupado com o bem-estar de sua família e amigos_, assim como o da terra, especialmente quando ele decide sacrificar sua própria vida para salvar a Terra de Cell. __Saga Majin Boo:__ Na saga Majin Boo, Goku é apresentado como um personagem ainda _sério e responsável_. Ele treina para se tornar um Super Saiyajin 3 e luta contra Majin Boo para salvar a Terra. Durante essa saga, Goku se mostra _consciente do impacto que suas ações têm sobre outras pessoas_ e sobre o mundo como um todo. Ele se mostra muito _responsável e comprometido_ com a proteção da Terra e de seus habitantes, o que é evidente quando ele decide ficar no mundo dos mortos para impedir que um vilão ainda mais poderoso se aproveite de sua ausência. Além disso, ele também passa a _valorizar mais a vida e a amizade_, o que é evidente em sua relação com Vegeta e na forma como quer que Majin Boo a mude sua natureza violenta. __Conclusão:__ Em resumo, a evolução de Goku em Dragon Ball Z é uma jornada complexa e que o leva de um personagem inocente e ingênuo a um guerreiro maduro e comprometido. Ao longo das várias sagas, ele enfrenta desafios cada vez maiores e é forçado a confrontar suas próprias limitações e medos. No entanto, ele também desenvolve uma forte ética de proteção e responsabilidade que o torna um herói verdadeiramente inspirador. ~~~
