Machikado Mazoku

When Yuuko Yoshida wakes up one morning to discover that she’s sprouted horns and a tail, she learns something that her mother has been meaning to tell her. You know that battle between the Light and Dark that’s been going on since the dawn of time? Well, Yuuko’s family are the bad guys.

So now, Yuuko has to defeat a local magical girl to win back some of her family’s vanquished power so they can afford to go to the all-you-can-eat pancake restaurant. And, of course, it turns out that the Magical Girl goes to Yuuko’s school, but Momo’s really nice and keeps rescuing Yuuko, which is pretty embarrassing and leaves Yuuko rather conflicted… but… all you can eat pancakes?

__Review em português logo abaixo:__ __English Review:__ __Hey__ everybody. My name is Blaze9 and welcome to my review of まちカドまぞく (Machikado Mazoku) or “The Demon Girl Next Door”. This review may contain some spoilers. img(https://i.ibb.co/fMQ4Tgz/imagem1.jpg) ~~~This is from the manga.~~~ Before we start, let me just say that I didn’t want to start watching this series, because I knew that if I started, I would get completely in love with it. That’s exactly what happened. I started on the fiveth episode, but Machikado Mazoku quickly became the best time of the week for me, along with Sounan Desu Ka. I love myself some comedy, and when you give me that mesmerizing art, and all those ship possibilities… Oh God, life is good. Does that sound weird? Well, what I’m trying to say is that this is probably gonna be some biased review, if you don’t mind. Now let’s start. __Overview:__ Machikado Mazoku is a comedy/slice-of-life anime, adapted from the original 4-koma comedy manga of same name created by Izumo Ito. If I’m not mistaken, the manga has 5 volumes released, which at the time I’m writing this review, the second volume is being translated to english. This anime was published between July 12th, 2019 and Sep 26th, 2019, and were made by J.C. Staff. Sadly, Machikado is very short, and has much more of a promotional value than anything. However, those are some real great 12 episodes we have here. __Story:__ Machikado story begins when our first protagonist, a girl called Yuuko Yoshida, after having a strange dream, suddenly wakes up one day and discovers she grew a pair of horns and also a tail. img(https://i.ibb.co/VN00fyR/003.png) ~~~This manga page describes what I said before.~~~ Without understanding anything, her mother explains that their family is actually descendents of the Dark Clan, or the Demon Clan, and their enemies are the Light Clan, represented by the Magical Girls. She also explains that, now that Yuuko awakened her demonic power, she now has the duty to free her family from the poverty curse imposed by the Light Clan. img(https://i.ibb.co/1bPsy8F/004-2.png) ~~~This manga page (also) describes what I said before.~~~ Yuuko takes this objective seriously. However, just after leaving her home, Yuuko is saved by a person that was supposed to be her enemy, a Magical Girl, Momo Chiyoda. I’m not gonna tell more about the story to avoid spoiling. But these are the first events that lead to all the other ones. Now, if you read what I wrote above without reading the manga nor watching the anime, you’re gonna think it sounds a bit serious. Indeed. Machikado Mazoku is a comedy series, but its plot is actually serious and nicely developed. In later volumes of the story, things are gonna get much more interesting. With that said, I’m really pumped up for more chapters of the manga coming out in english. Another thing I should talk about is the fact that Machikado Mazoku is very fast-paced. It’s different from the most of comedy series I’ve watched in this aspect, especially romantic comedies. In the latter, things take forever to happen, but in Machikado, the characters not only act fast, but talk fast as well. There were many times where I had to rewatch episodes due to this reason, haha, but it didn’t bother my experience at all. So, I will now give my notes for this anime, with extra commentary: __Story:__ 8/10 – As I said before, it takes a little time to understand, but once you try to take it seriously, it gets very interesting. __Characters:__ 10/10 – Shamiko and Momo are just GOLD. Initially, I didn’t like Momo very much, because I thought she was a little bland. I soon changed my mind, and now both of them are ~~my new OTP ship~~ some of my favorite characters. The support characters are excellent too, very spirituous, especially Mikan. I could watch a whole show with her as the main character. __Artstyle:__ 10/10 – Dude, Izumo Ito’s art, is something else. Really. I can’t express in words how much I love it. __Animation:__ 10/10 – Everything is made in favor of the comedy, exactly like it has to be. __Opening and Ending:__ 10/10 – The music in both the OP and the End are amazing. Not only that, but those dynamics make my life a little happier. __Soundtrack:__ 9/10 – Original soundtrack is awesome too. Gotta love the moments when Momo and Shamiko transform. __Voice Acting:__ 10/10 – As I said before, I had a few issues with Momo at first, but in the end, to me, both Akari Kito and Konomi Kohara both captured the spirit of the characters. What I would change: Nothing. __Conclusion: __ Would it be too much to ask for a second season? I would be extremely happy if it came out, though I think It’s improbable. Anyway, these are some of the best 12 episodes I ever watched. Of course I say this as a guy that loves comedy anime and manga. But really, if you’re reading this and didn’t watch it, give it a chance. Well, that was my review. Thanks a lot for reading. ----- __Review em português:__ __Olá.__ Eu sou o Blaze9 e bem-vindos ao meu review de まちカドまぞく __Estilo Artístico: 10/10__ – Cara, a arte do Izumo Ito, é espetacular.

~~~__Oh hello there, are you perhaps looking for the _perfect_ anime?__~~~ Then I have news for you, Machikado Mazoku is most definitely... not that. But it is very close! Let's back off a little and go through this step by step. Machikado Mazoku (eng.: The Demon Girl Next Door) is a slice of life comedy created by Izumo Itou, serialized in the magazine _Manga Time Kirara Carat_ . I am sure for a lot of people that name will already evoke certain ideas about the direction this work will take, but let's not get hasty. The anime adaptation was produced by _J.C.Staff_, famous for half the things you have probably watched if you are really into anime and also infamous for the other half of things you were warned about. While I, just as the average watcher, have my reservations towards this studio, I can say with full confidence that MachiMazo is not one of their more questionable adaptations. Why would I lay my hand into the fire for this inocuous little comedy show? That is entirely because I am smitten with it to a dangerous degree! I will explain why in the following sections. __Story:__ Yoshida Yuuko is just your average high-school girl living a normal life - and that is where you would already have lost me in the average generic summary. In truth nothing about Yuuko's life was normal even before the start of the story, but what follows is even more surreal. She wakes up one morning (after an odd dream involving a mysterious young girl) changed in peculiar ways. She has grown horns and a tail. Quickly it becomes clear that the blissfully unaware girl had been part of a family belonging to the Dark Clan, which had been defeated countless times by the Light Clan in the past. She is in fact a demon and has a great destiny to fulfill: Defeat a Magical Girl (the warriors of the Light Clan) and take her blood to undo a Seal that was put on her family for generations. The extent of that curse is interesting in itself, but for now all you need to know is that it keeps them slightly unfortunate and forces them to live with a monthly income of ~400$(~40000 Yen). Yuuko is ready to fight for her family's finances, fortune and better future and sets out to find and defeat Magical Girls. However Yuuko is incredibly incompetent in both battle and at being evil. As fate would have it her first encounter with a Magical Girl also immediately complicates her plans, because the peach-colored girl called Chiyoda Momo saves her life from an early death via Truck-sama, the deliverer of Isekai protagoniss. The story centers around the conflict and blooming friendship between these two lovable characters and their daily antics in pursuit of their goals. __Characters:__ Which naturally brings us to the greatest strength of this story: The cast. This is not unusual for a CGDCT show of course, but MachiMazo's cast is certainly one of the stronger in recent memory. First comes our protagonist, Yuuko, also affectionately called "Shamiko" by the rest of the cast (based on her demon title "Shadow Mistress Yuuko"). Her personality and attitude are entirely unfit for a demon and that is perhaps the greatest thing about her. She has a big heart, is incredibly adorable and generally tries her hardest - to a reasonable extent. Born weak and generally not too smart, she constantly fails at her job to cause evil and defeat the much too strong Momo, but her fighting spirit and will to better herself can make anyone cheer for her. Thanks to her nice nature she is unable to commit any deeds that would make her a target of retaliation by her enemy and even seems to have greater morals than the Magical Girl herself at times. Shamiko is easy to read and sway, but she also has her strengths. She is good at housework and compassionate and wants to be a great example to her little sister Ryo who adores her. She often overcompensates for her weakness with boasting and evil dialogue straight from a villainess out of a kids TV show, which only makes her reactions all the cuter. Her catchphrase is the rather tsundere sounding "Don't think this means you've won!" every time she messes up or loses. But what would a protagonist be without an antagonist? Probably much the same in this case, as the Magical Girl (retired by her own words), Chiyoda Momo is far from a true enemy to Shamiko. Right away she realizes the absolute inferiority of her opponent and uses her wit to trick Shamiko into all kinds of ways to avoid battle. There is no denying that Momo seems to have a great interest in the klutzy demoness right from the very first episode and it only gets more obvious from there. Momo is what most would call a kuudere, calm and collected and with a rather quiet voice most of the time. But through interactions it soon becomes clear that she has her cute side and is very kind in her own way, although she does have a mischievous streak for teasing Shamiko and others (especially the Dark Clan's sealed Ancestor). There are many oddities about her and the mysterious past she hides gives off the same vibes as many more modern takes on Magical Girls, whose lives are not all peachy and sparkles (e.g. _Lyrical Nanoha_ or _Madoka Magica_). They each bring out sides of each other that they would usually not openly show and as they get closer it seems that their rivalry is more akin to friendship (and perhaps even more? Hehe). The supporting cast also gives the show many additional flavors and keeps the world fleshed out and varied. Shamiko's family is a treat, with the somewhat ditzy, but ever positive mother and the extremely intelligent and adoring little sister. There are also Shamiko's classmates who are incredibly okay with pretty much any of the weird stuff that transpires in the city and keep teasing/cheering on Shamiko at every turn. One of the most prevalent side-characters however is the Dark Clan's sealed Ancestor, Lilith. She is an ancient demon from the Mesopotamian era who had been sealed in a demonic statue by the Light Clan and constantly prods Shamiko to fulfill her destiny. However, it soon turns out that she is not much more competent than Shamiko herself and becomes the butt of the joke a lot of the time. Even when you feel bad for her, she does bring the punishment on herself most of the time, so we can all laugh at her with a clean conscience! It is rather incredible how her basic statue design can show off so many emotions. The town has far more odd characters that get introduced across the episodes and later on in the manga, but that is enough for this section already. __Animation: __ I know I have spent a lot of time on the characters section, but they are the heart of this show. The other aspects are not too important in comparison in my opinion. Now as I mentioned before J.C.Staff is somewhat diverse in their quality and I would be lying through my teeth if I said MachiMazo has _great_ animation. But that is not to say it is bad either. Motions are exaggerated, character expressions are hilarious and the artstyle is just as cute as Izumo Itou's drawings in the manga. The color schemes are vibrant and give the world an incredible warmth and emotional width. There is the occasional off face, especially for background characters, but each focused shot and quick exchange always looks nice. There is not a whole lot of action in this anime, so there is also no need for mindblowing motion animation. They really put the effort in the few visual spectacles the show has, like the transformation sequences (which happen in incredibly fast time, but still last several seconds to the audience haha). Overall it was competently done for the genre and material. __Voice-acting:__ Do I even have to say anything? _Konomi Kohara_ (Chika from Kaguya-sama Love is War), _Akari Kito_ (Nezuko from the recent Kimetsu no Yaiba) and _Minami Takahashi_ (Lucoa from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid) are all voice acting legends and they bring their absolute A-game to this anime. That is also absolutely necessary, as the show has a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of dialogue. The pace of conversations is nothing to sneeze at and yet they deliver it believably, concise and emotionally all at the same time. There is not a single miscast character here and while Momo may sound a bit too quiet at times, her occasional outbursts are all the more effective for it. It is hard to believe that Akari Kito also voices chipper characters like _Aru Honshou_ from _Hitoribocchi_ after hearing this performance. Her range is massive. Aside from the voice acting the sound design is also nice. The sound effects play well with the comedy and the music never overpowers the dialogue. Opening & Ending are a delight to the ears and sung by the cast itself (as seems to be tradition for CGDCT anime). Listen for yourself (no spoilers): youtube(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzXHjkKwH4M) __Pacing:__ When talking about the incredibly fast dialogue, pace is unavoidable. The anime boasts sadly only 12 episodes, but do they ever make the best of that alotted time! Even veteran sub readers will perhaps be forced to pause sometimes to read a quickfire sentence or the background expression and noises. The plot does never stagnate or stay still, it is a story that will always develop and keep the characters evolving. This anime does not fall in the usual trap of CGDCT shows where the setting and events only exist to facilitate the comedy. Instead the plot is very much there and the driving force behind the characters actions, while the comedy is mostly reactionary to these events that would even be entertaining on their own. There are emotional moments and even sometimes allusions ot darker things in the background (as the setting outside of a comedy would certainly be rather bleak), but they never linger too much or leave a bad aftertaste. The fast pace allows both for a fluid plot as well as a density that would put most drama shows to shame. One episode could be said to be worth two sometimes and that may even feel daunting for some viewers. I personally believe that this is a great way to have more content, but your milage may vary. __Conclusion:__ Without a doubt in my mind Machikado Mazoku is one of the best recent anime in the genre, for its colorful and easily likeable characters, actually relevant plot and overall ever entertaining interactions. The anime naturally ends mid-story, so do not expect a real conclusion, but there is always hope for a season 2 (and the manga is being translated rather quickly). What is here however is faithful to the manga and endlessly entertaining. It is one of those rare Kirara stories that is just good in all aspects and cannot be overlooked. And if I haven't already implied it enough, there is plenty of Yuri subtext between the main pair, so for whoever is into that, this series is basically a must. They will only grow closer after all~
# [~~~**SOL AHEAD, not will be talking about the plot points so if you find that as a spoiler then stay clear!**~~~]()
I ended up really enjoying this show, CGDCT is my true weakness... [**PREMISE OF THE SHOW:**]() Machikado Mazoku centers on Yuuko (often referred as Shamiko), a normal High School Girl who happens to have her family be under "curse of a 40,000 yen (about US$365) per month living." One day Lilith, an ancestor of Shamiko, gives Shamiko demonic powers and tasks her with defeating and drawing blood from the Magical girl. But well you see, Shamiko is a big softie and ends up making friends with Momo (The Magical Girl). She doesn't realise that they are friends and thus constantly proclaims how she will defeat her! Near the end of the show we are faced with actual build up to a plot, though we'd have to see that in Season 2 which, at the time of writing this review, hasn't been announced and probably never will be announced, sadly. ~~~img420(https://media.tenor.com/images/15044f82be57ce2016b4c90b4f8ea0ad/tenor.gif)~~~
[**CHARACTERS:**]() The main cast consists of: **Yuuko Yoshida** - Otherwise known as **Shamiko**, she is tasked with defeating a local magical girl. Shamiko is **_Determined_** to defeat her...even if Shamiko isn't the fighter type and is actually the biggest softie one can meet. Honestly she made the whole watching experience so fun, especially her interactions with Momo (The magical girl). **Momo Chiyoda** - The magical girl which has to face agaisnt Shamiko...kinda, its less of a face off and more of a experience. Momo is calm and composed, she never gets her emotions best of her. It is very obvious she has taken Shamiko as a friend and wants to somewhat help. Shamiko's and Momo's personalities are such a clash and I love **it**. **Lilith** - The ancestor of Yuuko, she wants Shamiko to defeat the magical girl and get her blood as to regain her true power because now she is kinda a statue. She does end up unveiling some story plots but mostly shouts at Shamiko for being a failure. Thats the main cast. Near the end of the show we can see the mother being much bigger part of the story as she holds all the secrets to the whole thing. But for **most** of the show she pretends to be oblivious to all of this and just does her usual chores. ~~~img420(https://media1.tenor.com/images/8c78d2b64ed740fc1f376f83fd97781a/tenor.gif?itemid=15218496)~~~
[**ART/ANIMATION:**]() The animation in Machikado Mazoku is good, not anything spectacular but its better than the usual SOL stuff we see. I love the use of bright colours in the show, so eye catching. ~~~img420(https://66.media.tumblr.com/bc0d3c0e68bbf4bf5dbfab204186f761/tumblr_puieo6JmuB1v6bs4yo3_500.gifv)~~~
[**MUSIC:**]() My **goodness** the OP and ED of this show are so god damn catchy, I've been constantly listening to it. I cannot believe just how good they are. It's too damn cute, I love 'em so much! ~~~img420(https://media1.tenor.com/images/f9544685adb579b3478efe742a5b82ab/tenor.gif?itemid=14606652)~~~
[**OVERALL OPINION:**]() Machikado Mazoku is the show which I picked as a seasonal because I thought it was gonna be just another generic SOL. But oh boy was I wrong, this show is amazing, honestly. Many SOL and CGDCT shows struggle with being good due to the reason that despite their concept of the plot being good they don't have likable characters, I don't care about some astrology club hoping to find an asteroid if the characters are just cardboard cut out (totally not calling any show out), Machikado Mazoku **has** those likable characters so even despite the plot being just a spin on the magical girl idea it still feels fresh and fun *because* you are really only there for the characters.
Fractured
Fractured
_Spoiler free._ For a while I ignored this show while it sat in my plan to watch. Hell I even removed it a couple times because it seemed from the outside at least, that it was just a cheesy CGDCT show. Kinda hypocritical coming from someone who loves Non Non Biyori but who knows. I think this show somehow managed to combine a plot in to a slice of life show perfectly. Think of _The Devil is a Part Timer,_ but a ever so slightly more serious. While it's not focused on the plot to the most extreme extent, every episode adds something that tallies up to the finish. It might not be the best written or explained, but it was implemented in to the show well, with the important parts given so you know what's happening. All through this, slice of life aspects, comedy, and heartwarming moments are stitched in making it both a great slice of life and also a show you could viably watch for plot. Granted you might not have the best time if you do that. Unfortunately, in terms of plot, I think the first season was just a level of setup, and it almost feels like it was written without the expectation of a second season. It doesn't detract from the plot by any means, but it sucks having watched this before the second season was out. I want a little more of the plot, but I can't have it right now outside of reading the manga. I think if it really wanted to improve, they could've addressed what threats there were/are, but I think I might be going to the wrong show expecting that. It just surprised me at the level of plot, when I expected a peaceful slice of life. As for the characters, I think the show struggled a little. Yuuko was so dead set on accomplishing her goals, I'd argue there wasn't much in terms of noticeable development for her outside of the very end. The show used this part of her personality quite a bit for comedic effect, but it started to get a bit obnoxious for me by the end. Maybe they were just trying to be more truthful to the manga, who knows, but it was saved by bits and pieces of comedy that were either meta or more along the lines of "shitposting in anime form" to carry it along. It's not like it became tiring, just that the main became a little annoying because of how they preyed off her personality. On the other hand, Momo, the other "main", did see a level of development up until the end. It's was just a bit more subtle, because her personality was such a stark contrast to the more outgoing main. They also preyed off her personality for comedy, just to a lesser extent, which made it a bit funnier when it happened. The show also had a habit of telling that characters were friends, but never showing it. It was really notable with side characters, who were described as friends, but were only around when it was convenient for comedy. Or saying that one character did a lot for another, but never showing or saying what it was. I get you can't say everything, but hell at least give me a little backstory on some of these characters you keep showing me. Edit: The manga had a bit better pacing with this. It does eventually sorta happen, the show just ended a little before it. Also one more small note, the show is wildly truthful to how the manga was done. Almost no content was cut, and most of the extras from it are in the show, which is why it may occasionally seem to jump around a little. It's a nice touch. Audio wise there really isn't much to say for the show. The OP/ED were decent, I prefer the ED more. Some of the sound effects are really good, some of them are fine. But one notable thing was the one of the sides making a lot of... noises. You'll know what I mean when I watch it, because I'm really incapable of describing it, but it was odd. Not really bad, because at times it was funny, but it was weird when it was inevitably used out of place. The soundtrack was also pretty good, nothing impressive but it fit well and never stuck out anywhere as bad. Visually I think it was above average, but it didn't really have any time that it wowed me. It just managed to be above average, everywhere, consistently. Whether it be the backgrounds, the character models, or some of the graphics. Nothing else to really say for this, I guess the OP/ED were done well too? Overall I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to season two. For me, it was the perfect combination of plot and slice of life that really hit a balance that appealed to me. I honestly went in just expecting a peaceful slice of life, since that stuff is like candy for me. Anyone that goes in for plot however might be disappointed, because it could feel like filler in a shounen or whatever, but hey, that's their fault for not reading up on anything.
# __Sobre:__ Machikado Mazoku produzido pelo estúdio J.C.Staff e sendo estreado em 2019, sendo um anime Slice of life MOE com personagens bem fofas e uma temática que chama bastante a atenção já que apresenta Mahou Shoujou (Garotas mágicas). ~~~img570(https://media1.tenor.com/m/79h6T5752RIAAAAC/machikado-mazoku-yuuko-yoshida.gif)~~~ Mesmo tendo essa temática, na verdade a protagonista da história é a jovem Yuuko que em certo dia acorda e percebe a presença de chifres demoníacos e uma calda, logo após, sua mãe revela um segredo da família que é o fato de serem descendentes de um clã das trevas que foi selado pelas garotas mágicas do clã da luz. Yuuko então descobri que a única maneira de se livrar da maldição da pobreza é assassinar a garota mágica e respingar o sangue dela na estátua de sua antiga ancestral. Pelo traço fofinho que o anime oferece, parece até que a Sinopse é um pouco pesada demais pro anime, mas é assim que a história começa, com Yuuko convencida que irá se livrar da maldição colocada sobre sua família. Mas toda essa ideia muda rapidamente quando ela se vê de frente com Momo a garota mágica da vizinhança que é muito mais forte que Yuuko que acabou de despertar seus poderes. Devido a essa grande diferença de força entres as duas, Yuuko acaba se tornando uma garota demônio incompetente e sempre acaba sendo enganada e endividada pela rival. Com dó de Yuuko, Momo decide tentar treinar ela para que ela aprenda mais sobre seus poderes e fique um pouco mais forte para tentar no mínimo ter um confronto digno com ela, resultando em treinamentos como carregamento de pneus, levantamento de peso e caminhadas para obter melhores condições físicas para um confronto. ~~~img570(https://i.imgur.com/hoiOGP0.gif)~~~ Como Yuuko é uma garota bem fofa, incompetente, fraca e envergonhada, o caminho que ela precisa seguir para conseguir seu objetivo não vai ser nada fácil, principalmente tendo Momo como sua rival. Com essa pegada de Mahou shoujo, não podia faltar as clássicas cenas de transformações das garotas e a maneira como Machikado Mazoku trabalha com isso é muito divertido. Quando Yuuko consegue se transformar ela decide adotar o nome de Shadow Mistress Yuuko ou Shamiko que ficou como apelido. ~~~img570(https://media1.tenor.com/m/-dJoLfhQOEsAAAAC/machikado-mazoku-yuko-yoshida.gif)~~~ As cenas sempre demonstram a grande dificuldade nas transformações devido a grande vergonha que Shamiko tem ao se transformar e sempre são acompanhadas por uma trilha sonora bem gostosa de se ouvir, sendo na minha opinião as cenas mais memoráveis que o anime possui. # __Conclusão:__ Machikado Mazoku é um ótimo anime MOE, que soube usar o tema de Mahou Shoujo de maneira bem diferente e propícia para o desenvolvimento da história, com as personalidades fofas das garotas, momentos divertidos e tendo um clima bem alegre e colorido te dando uma sensação de conforto. Isso sem contar sobre a Opening, Ending e o design das personagens que são incríveis e aumentam ainda mais o clima fofinho que o anime propõe. Um fato bem interessante que se percebe é o grande desenvolvimento da amizade inesperada entre Yuuko e Momo, que mesmo sendo rivais sempre passam diversos momentos do dia juntas, disputando e realizando tarefas cotidianas resultando em uma grande amizade entre elas. __Obrigado por lerI!__ ~~~img570(https://i.imgur.com/9paLmLt.gif)~~~
#~~~The Demon Girl Next Door~~~ img1080(https://i.imgur.com/RSJ5k3A.jpg) #~~~1.0-Summary~~~ ------------- Machikado Mazoku tells the story of Yuuko, a young girl who discovers she has the powers of a succubus (demon), also discovers that there are magical girls who must protect the world from demons. The work tells the progression of Yuuko to become a great demon and thus be able to free the family from a curse imposed by the Clan of Light on their ancestors. The curse of misery where your family is condemned to live in poverty. #~~~2.0-Storyline~~~ ------------------------------- The anime begins with Yuuko dreaming of an entity that identifies itself as Lilith. She tells Yuuko that she is a descendant of a clan that possesses demonic powers, and that she will guide Yuuko to become a powerful demon so that she can restore her clan's power. Yuuko's first mission is to find the magical girl in charge of the city and defeat her. Yuuko wakes up and realizes that she has gained both a tail and two horns, her mother tells her that in the past her family was hunted and cursed by a magical girl who belongs to the clan of light, whose mission is to hunt demons. Yuuko decides to get out of the house for a bit, when she almost gets hit by a truck and is conveniently saved by the town's magical girl named Momo. Yuuko goes to school and discovers that she studies at the same school as Momo, she decides to try to fight Momo, but, realizing that she is much weaker, the two become friends and Yuuko asks Momo to train her so they can duel. The entire anime is basically about their daily lives, with a bit of comic Slice of Life and action. #~~~2.1-Storyline Conclusion~~~ --------------------------------------------- I particularly missed a focus on the work, although towards the end we have some revelations about Yuuko and Momo past, I feel that it lacks something central to develop, I thought the work's objective was vague. It's not bad, but definitely for those who expect something more centered and developed, it will end up disappointing. #~~~3.0-Characters~~~ ------------------------------------ #~~~3.1-Yuuko~~~ Yuuko is clumsy and weak, which makes the script funny. #~~~3.2-Momo~~~ Momo is strong and focused, very closed off, hardly makes friends. #~~~3.3-Lilith~~~ Lilith is Yuuko's ancestor, her main role in the script is to make Yuuko do wrong things, encouraging her to make crazy plans against the magical girl (Momo). #~~~3.4-Characters Conclusion~~~ ------------------------------ The characters work well Yuuko being the complete opposite of Momo create a fun duo, Lilith in turn encouraging the uptight Yuuko to do wrong things also makes the work very funny. I have nothing to complain about at this point. #~~~4.0-Animation~~~ --------------------------------- The animation is ok. As for a Slice of Live, I won't be strict with the animation, it remains consistent throughout the entire work. #~~~5.0-Dubbing Cast~~~ ------------------------------ The voice acting is very good, the voices match. I must remember the voice actress Konomi Kohara (Chika in kaguya-sama) who makes Yuuko much funnier. #~~~6.0-Main Genres~~~ ----------------------------- Slice of Life, Comedy. #~~~7.0-Conclusion~~~ ------------------------------ The work is very interesting, it is relaxing to watch, the characters are fun and charismatic, but there is a lack of a main focus in the work, something more, and that makes you wonder in the end was that it? what can i expect for the next season? everything is very vague, particularly this is the only negative point of this work, and that's what made me decide to give it 8 (80). #~~~Guys who liked the review, consider following me, pretend to do several others: https://anilist.co/user/KuriyamaKawaii/ ~~~
__Spoiling without warning.__
Cute girls doing cute things and magical girls. Already seen, already experienced. Nothing new under the sun. And yet…
Being original, let's begin with the plot. 『Machikado Mazoku』's plot is basically episodic, like the good ol' anime; but it doesn't recycle as much as the good ol' anime would do, which is great ngl. There's a central plot, the "battle" between the dark and the light — that is the demon girls and the magical girls —, which is used as a core and comes back at every occasion to explain the reasons why everything is happening; but that's pretty much it: it's the core *reason*, but the twists and turns of the anime look more like a slice-of-life or a shoujo, weaving a relation between the characters (esp' the main ones). The main thing repeating itself is Shamiko's motto « Don’t think you’ve won! » (これで勝ったと思うなよ!, Kore de katta to omou na yo!), used as an announcement for new adventures to come [back].
About this humor, 『Machikado Mazoku』 runs obviously a lot on derision. The humor is absurd, as is the plot; it’s taken seriously and laughed at at the same time. Without breaking the Fourth Wall, the anime often takes looks at itself a lot, all the while criticizing itself and its situations. For instance, while Yuko’s costume is to be expected in a realm of magical girls and demon girls, the other characters always criticize it for being too exhibitionist. Another example is when Yuko is in Momo’s dream, something somewhat weird happens and she calls it « surreal ». Nonetheless, 『Machikado Mazoku』 uses derision very well: so well that, while the animation is not great, since the absurdity of the situations and the dialogues do everything, it just works and we're happy with it. It’s like a piece of absurd theater, very Japanese-like, bit 『Nichijou』-like, where everything at the screen is absurd: the explanations, the drawings or the characters (special thought for the cat announcing its « Toki wa kita » (« The time has come ») with its heavy voice 🤌)… all that while being a contrast between kawaii and serious.
And so we've got here 『Machikado Mazoku』's main force: it mixes pretty nicely its diverse genres. Slice-of-life, shoujo, magical girl and cute girls doing cute things; no matter for which one, you can't help but smile by watching 『Machikado Mazoku』, be it for the kawaiiness, the comicalness, the relations between the characters or the absurdness—there's always a -ness you can cling onto.
All that being said, I've got to reproach to 『Machikado Mazoku』 one important thing: its side characters, who are not well treated in comparison to the main ones. Much importantly, we always feel too much their purpose of side character. This is not so much the case for Shamiko's sister as it is for Mikan, who never really acquires a real role or enters the plot. This is at its worst for Shamiko's classmates, who leave totally the episodes as the anime moves forward…
『Machikado Mazoku』 has a few defaults: it doesn't have great side characters, it has no great animation, and it doesn't create something new; but it does offer an interesting mixture of old recipes. It is not an exceptional anime, but it's definitely good at what it does.
