One last heist. That's what they all say, right? Just one final score, and everyone can retire and
take up fishing. Thing is, the jails are filled with super villains who thought the same thing, and
got busted. But the Heat's in a jam. He's run up the kind of gambling debt that - if he can't pay it
back in cash - will be paid in blood. Nobody wants to see the most beloved supercrook of all time
rubbed out by the mob - especially his biggest fan, Johnny Bolt. And Johnny's got a plan to help the
Heat and make all his buddies disgustingly rich at the same time. Unfortunately for Johnny's recruits,
they have to head to Spain and rob the world's most notorious super villain blind. And that's where
things get tricky.

Aw shit...another netflix show.Now hear me out on this one. It actually does not suck. No its quite enjoyable,not in a guilty pleasure way like Yasuke.It legit has some good things. I think it's awesome having a goated studio like Bones get to adapt a western hero comic.I know little about hero stuff but there is a newer trend where there are more gritty and violent takes on superheroes and this show really does follow the same vein. STORY AND CHARACTERS Instead of being mostly about heroes it's about the super villains or the “super crooks’. There were comparisons made to Great Pretender with its concept, and that comparison is valid, but instead of multiple missions, there are one or two grand missions, instead of the scam artists having some code of ethics, the only rule the villains have is to not kill anyone,and instead of multiple villains,there is one villain, well there are a lot of villains,but there is one grand “antagonist”, and he is absolutely fucked in the head.I’ll admit, this show is not for everyone.This anime feels like The Boys meets Great Pretender.With visceral violent action and absurdity mixed with a carefree and refined tone.And i’m a sucker for stuff like that.Also, really cool commentary on temptation and the way of life that makes both heroes and villains no different from one another.Luckily that commentary is addressed more in a comedic way.All the characters dont have much of a tragic backstory or anything, theyre just normal people who live on the lower end of american society,so seeing them doing their villain thing is really cool.The only character who did have a sense of likeability was Kasey. She was not only hot and a badass at times, but she had actual goals she wanted to accomplish.And While I don't buy Johnny Bolt and her together, I sorta liked how his shitty actions did shed some light on why he and she are villain like in nature. My problem with the story of Super Crooks is that it takes a bit to get going. There are almost four episodes dedicated to set up characters, and while it's good, it could've trimmed the pacing in places especially since the getaway scene looked like something out of Spy Kids 3D. Also, the pacing is shaky in places, having fight scenes with zombies and heroes take forever to get through.And scenes explaining the evil villian corporation or whatever did lose me. Also some world building elements I dont get.Like apparently San Francisco,one of the most iconic destinations in America is lacking of heroes, and the heroes they do call for are ridiculously incompitent and end up killing civilians.But when the show gets going, it gets going.A lot of fun action scenes and very ridiculous moments.Also some moments were really dark and messed up. ART AND ANIMATION Goddamnit. Bones you done it again. This show looks so damn good, probably the best looking netflix original anime i’ve seen so far. Bones doesn't just make the animation good mostly, they add a lot of creativity to it.Using the weird powers to make some really weird and fantastic action sequences. Also, i didn't realize this till now. But Bones is really good at body horror. The violence and gore in this show is so insane and highly detailed. I even gagged a little at iit.There was one shot with this guy’s arm that looked like something out of AOT and it was so freaky and well animated.It even looked better than anything in season 4 of AOT. Yeah I said it.I find it funny how there is sex, graphic violence, and guys cursing like sailors,but they still pixelate middle fingers, very weird.The way they stylized the american locations were cool too, having a lot of spinoff brands like the CDE channel, Somy cameras, and Taco Ball.The designs in some scenes even look like a well animated western cartoon.Really awesome direction too.Im kinda shocked this show is 13 episodes, and each episode being longer than your standard anime.They were really flexible with their animation budget, especially if its coming from Netflix. SOUND The ost is weird, its like this laidback funk electronic music that never really ends,but its put in the background so much,you barely notice it.Aaaaand the Netflix dub. Its a netflix dub. It has really great voice actors,but really shitty directing.Basically most Netflix dubs in a nutshell. ENJOYMENT I honestly don’t know my rating for this one. I know Netflix gets so much shit for their anime, and rightfully so. But this one seems the most “competently done” compared to everything else.It was nowhere near as crap as I expected, it put into perspective how not good Yasuke was.It did not fully hook me at first but eventually it got me hooked. I know it might not be highly rated, some might find it boring or silly.i’m not gonna call the show shit depending on how inaccurate it is to the man-oop i mean “comic”.But it is really fun, silly characters, fucked up sense of humor, and animated by my fav studio of all time,my cup of tea for sure. I didnt realize this,but seeing all the heroes and guys in tight clothing reminded me a lot of MHA, made by the same studio...soooooo they’re in the same universe.CONFIRMED.
#~~~__Short summary(Spoiler Free)__~~~ The story starts off seemingly normal through the eyes of an teenage boy outcast named Johnny Bolt who has a pipe dream of being a superhero in a world where heroes are treated as deities. Johnny quickly finds out he has superpowers and just as quickly his illusionary journey as a hero begins, him and his bestfriend Tom start staging and preparing for Johnny's miraculous path on to fame, but not everything goes as planned for Johnny. __OP/ED and overall Music soundtrack __ The anime itself felt like something that would air in the early to late 1990's-2000's in a modern art style and the soundtrack reflects the older timeline the anime is set in. I truly believe the music is perfect relative to the setting and overall character groups. During my watch I felt strong nostalgia to the older superhero cartoons that would air such as Batman Beyond, The Amazing Spider-Man and so on and so forth. The OP's were catchy visually and audibly as well as fit well alongside the show itself. #__Animation __ Personally I found the animation style to be very charming and familiar yet different than what you'd expect coming out of Japan. The art style had a very western feel to it. I'm not the type to make a big deal out of animation and overall harbor a mostly positive opinion for a lot of anime that may not pass the original eye-test in animation. I found the fight scenes the anime did showcase to feel very dynamic and fluent, the enhanced movement through superpower scenes felt very fluent and well done as well as captured each superpower in a fun and engaging way. The key point I got from this amine's animation is that it captures very gruesome events in a way that doesn't have that uncomfortableness impact similarly to _The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace_ anime. That may throw people off who desire that kind of impact in those types of scenes but I found it to be enjoyable. The final thing I'll touch on is cityscapes and landscape shots, overall I thought they were very eye-catching and easy on the eyes, I found they captured cities like New York, Miami and Chicago in stereotypical comic book styles but that made it enjoyable in my opinion. #__Characters and their Designs __ The character superhero/supervillain COSTUME design's were very charming and engaging albeit a bit cheesy but that's what they were aiming for, an old-school Superhero/Supervillain style and I loved it so much. Out of costume the characters felt very in-style and very very charming as well as modern to the time the anime is set in. I.e.: img(https://media.comicbook.com/2021/06/mark-millar-super-crooks-netflix-anime-studio-bones-1272405.jpeg?auto=webp) Each character felt very distinct and very different from each other which kept them so memorable and fresh in my mind throughout each episode. The relationships between characters I found as a plus each character seems to bounce off each other fluently and differently, it felt like a team that was crafted very well. The characters in this show are very diverse in many different ways and done in a way where it doesn't feel forced or disrespectful. #__Relationships__ I just wanted to add this for my own volition but in this anime there isn't a ton of romance but the story between Kacey and Johnny I felt was very good and you find yourself rooting for them in the end and for Johnny to make the right decisions. #__Voice acting(SUB)__ The voice actors that were casted for this anime I felt were perfect and voice acting work between characters felt natural and for the most part it made you feel so immersed and as if this is a real team of real people. I would make no changes to the cast and none felt annoying. #__Final Thoughts__ This anime was __high octane fun__, the journey had ups and downs and that helped develop the characters as much as one can in a 13 episode premier. The anime felt similar to Invincible which was a big hit over the last year. I'd recommend this anime to people who enjoy a fun high octane anime with a diverse and unique cast. I wouldn't recommend this to people who enjoy a more serious anime and look for perfection or are overanalytical or critical toward anime they desire to watch. MY Score: 100/100, I'm not critical toward anime negatively and usually feel very positive watching everything. I'm happy I got the opportunity to experience this work :) my score will be very different than others but it's how I feel. #___Bonus info___ Favourite characters: Johnny Bolt and Kasey Anne Thank you for reading if you do choose to watch it I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
First I want to say that in short, if you liked Great Pretender you will like this, I am sure. Personally I think Great Pretender is slightly better, now let me say the whole review. Super Crooks, is a story about supervillains in a world with superpowers, based on an comic which isn't Japanese. It's hard to say what the story is about more than that, because the story is divided into different arcs and each has it's own problems and reasons and motivations. First arc is an introduction of the main character so it might feel boring though I enjoyed it. Next we can say that there are 2 major arcs both being a team of supervillains plotting a grand heist and executing it. #__Story__ The story isn't complex, and the plans they come up with are not something that you would call top fiction, though in the story these are some crazy and genius plans. The world itself is somewhat interesting, people get superpowers somehow and now their kids have them too, what happens is some become superheroes and some supervillains, or they just live a regular life. But don't compare it to MHA, I mean, you can, but in MHA most people have quirks, here just small number of people got superpowers. So while the world isn't very much talked about, the characters are something else, and the story of the main character and his development is what the story focuses on. #__Characters__ I legit think that Super Crooks has one of the best cast of characters. Almost all of them are generic at first glance, but they are not. The cast is big and we get so many different characters, everyone with a cool and memorable design, add a god level animation with amazing CGI scenes and you get so good fucking quality there. I should talk about the characters development and importance for the story in this section, but I just had to mention the design itself, it's so sick and they look amazing. Now about their personality, there is no one character which I hate, and that's good, all of them have good written behavior and they act accordingly. The main character get some good development from basically a teenager into a man, kinda. The dialogues are interesting, the interactions, and each of them are very fun to watch. #__Production__ I already mentioned it but the animation is sick, characters look badass and the fights are amazing. Add a no censorship at all of gore, blood and sex scenes which look almost like hentai. The gore is so strong at one scene I had to look a way for a second, even though it's drawn. The music is also nice, I liked the opening it got a good vibe with the show, though the song itself isn't the style I like to listen to. #__Pacing__ The only problem I got with this show is the pacing. It's too fast, I honestly want a 24 episodes version. The cases are too fast so they can't focus too much on details. There is time limit so they just often skip stuff and make a couple of years jump without telling what happened in between. All of the action is going very fast and I tried to watch all on one go, but couldn't because I had to take breaks. I have no idea why they made it 1 cur, perhaps the budget or something else but the pacing is the main reason I remove points for the score of it. #__Conclusion__ An unusual show. Made with style and love. This is not for everyone, and they definitely didn't try to go mainstream, and this is what I like. Even if it's not that great, they created something that is not common and interesting to watch, something that you watch and you can't compare it to anything else (except for Great Pretender). I recommend it to anyone who liked Great Pretender, who likes superpowers, and especially likes to watch villains in action.
~~~super crooks is a netflix exclusive anime that's an adaptation of an american comic series, which gave the show enough novelty and enough of a distinct feel and appearance in the medium of anime that i decided to binge watch it on a whim. now, does it being "different" translate into it being an enjoyable experience and a breath of fresh air for people who've gotten a bit tired of certain tropes and rehashed ideas across anime and manga? uh, no, it's instead introduced one of the problems i've had with american media over the last few years to an entirely new format. i want to say upfront that i don't mean that in some kind of edgy way, it's not anything about the ideas presented by the story at all since there's nothing of much substance there to begin with, the problem is primarily in how it uses violence, which i'll talk about briefly in the next section. also this is gonna be free of spoilers other than talking about some basic setup and using mostly vague references for the rest like my other reviews img220(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/852325752040456194/1030459239610728469/rainbow.gif) __main thing btw__ img500(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/852325752040456194/917493785301221376/title_moment.jpg) there's a fundamental misconception about why more graphic and darker stories tend to work so well as subversions of the superhero genre. i understand that the appeal may lie in different places for some people, or be completely non-existent for others, but from my perspective one of the biggest benefits to a story being given the room to embrace "darker" aspects including gore is that the product is more complete and realistic than anything which shies away from more difficult ideas and by extension becomes more engaging. over the last several years we've gotten a spate of movies and tv shows like the boys, deadpool, invincible and brightburn that reflect an understanding among major studios that a real market exists for stories willing to go that route and take an r-rating instead of watering themselves down for wider audiences. super crooks feels like the latest addition to that trend, and a failed one, because it's rooted in the same lineage as those stories as an american comic book adaptation despite being packaged in this instance as an anime. the reason i say it's failed is because of the misconception i referenced at the start of this paragraph - the misconception being that simply containing some gore or other such features as the titles i mentioned is enough to actually subvert the tropes of the superhero genre or become an interesting story within that context. what we're treated to here is something hollow, all surface and no substance, and nowhere is that more evident than in its use of gory violence. throughout this anime, hyperviolence is used as little more than an aesthetic at best and for a rather odd form of humour at worst in a way that really just comes off as childish. "childish" because it seems to have no concept of such a thing as consequences, which really does spill over into other aspects of the story as well. the tone shift between the first two episodes - which just about gave me whiplash - is the first instance of this, as certain events that took place in the first episode have no noticeable long-term effect on any of the characters, and never really got brought up or alluded to again in spite of the very many witnesses and presumably traumatised people. it does this frustrating thing where it shows off brutal, horrific and destructive moments at various points and then effectively just resets everything with the (partial) exception of the last episode and honestly that's something more consistent with children's shows and the kind of sanitised pg stuff it initially presents itself as almost the polar opposite of through that first episode. the show does take a turn that makes the title make sense, and also might initially seem like a novel concept since we're following the villains, but it doesn't quite do anything interesting in that regard either because once again significant moments go by without really leading to anything at all. at points i felt like i was watching half of a more interesting story, and since this is a spinoff that might actually be the case. we don't really have any fully heroic superheroes in the traditional sense, and that sets up the expectation that things will unravel or the story's gonna make some kind of larger point, which "the heat" (dumb name btw) seems like he's built up to convey, but since we can't have anything of substance here he just turns out to be yet another kleptomaniac with very little in the way of redeeming qualities. speaking of kleptomaniacs it's probably appropriate to talk about the cast at this point. __characters btw__ img500(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/852325752040456194/917493784844075049/1-35-screenshot.jpg) there's not a whole lot to say on this front since everyone in this story is written to be as flat as the surface of a koala's brain, with maybe the exception of kasey. i mentioned the shift in tone that takes place in this story and how jarring it felt, it became clear that the story wasn't meant to be taken with the most seriousness, and that's a reasonable enough approach, except even on these terms it was underwhelming and that really begins with how it handles its cast of characters. obviously, since we're following the "villains" in this story from the onset it'd be a mistake to expect paragons of virtue among our main characters. in tone this is the kinda show that makes you support a bunch of lovable shitheads on a series of misadventures, except it delivers on all of the misadventures and none of the "lovable shitheads" because of how frustratingly one-note they are for the most part. johnny's kinda sus friends are really the worst offenders here, because they pretty much just exist to drag him into trouble every once in a while and not much else. the writers seemed to be somewhat aware of this and tried to flesh them out a little bit at the point where they were introduced but that just led to really unnatural and overly expository dialogue to layer on some motivations that didn't amount to anything in the end. we literally have one of them delivering a random monologue about how they're getting left behind by a new technological era or whatever, and i retained almost none of it because of just how out of place it felt to be giving such basic information and perspectives like that to johnny who's only been gone for six months, and if it was for the sake of the audience then it didn't really say anything substantial enough to be noteworthy. johnny himself was kinda all over the place aside for loving kasey and being a kleptomaniac. part of why i say all over the place is because while he's presented as calm and easygoing it seems like in moments where the plot demands it he's prone to outbursts, though this is largely confined to the first part of the story. as an example he lashes out at ghost for no other reason than letting us see his powers, since we'd already seen everyone else's prior to that. like the dialogue, these moments that exist Just for the sake of the audience really disrupt the natural flow of the story. this section is really running on now so i'll end it with a return to that line about it being half of a more interesting story and how praetorian's character is probably the best example of that. he's very clearly got an overly inflated ego and a penchant for violence that omni-man would be proud of, and since the heroes had already been shown to be pretty uncaring when it comes to collateral damage and even the wellbeing of the "villains" by the time he made his first appearance, it seemed like he was being set up to have a larger arc at the vanguard of the issues with this world's heroes. he did kinda have that arc, but it took place almost entirely off screen and if that's not disappointing i don't know what is. in some contexts i might actually praise this kind of approach and appreciate that the storytelling is really efficient and narrow enough in scope to really give the protagonist and rest of the main cast time to shine, but johnny's just not an interesting or likable character in any capacity because even with the story built entirely around their experiences they don't ever develop or grow or show any amount of depth with the exception of kasey. so you're sacrificing the benefits of a story with a broader lens while not getting any of the benefits of a story with a narrower lens either. oh yeah in case it isn't already clear i actually did appreciate kasey and how there was more to her than anyone else in terms of background and even character flaws, though her power was a bit too much. __general stuff and final score btw__ img500(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/852325752040456194/917492191864193024/breh.jpg) beyond kasey, other plus sides were really just to do with the visuals. the animation is pretty good with the exception of some more spotty moments where they try to blend some cgi in there in a way that didn't work out so well, and it's definitely work worthy of studio bones. the fights were handled reasonably well too even if i wasn't necessarily invested in what was happening most of the time. also the designs of all the hero and villain costumes were pretty great, some of them looked a little goofy but that's unavoidable in this genre anyway. another positive is that even though as i said before the use of graphic content here was appallingly bad, the show at least didn't feel compelled to go for gratuitous sexual violence on top of that like other similar stories do, with the exception of some sexual assault that does occur towards the end but honestly the framing of it is probably debatable and i was just too grossed out to want to think about it. for the sexually suggestive framing of the op, super crooks also now has the distinction of being the anime with possibly the worst opening i've ever laid eyes on in my life and the only instance of me being glad netflix prompts you to skip intros. the song itself isn't bad, but the visuals are just weird, off-putting, and mostly not relevant to anything that really happens in the story. depending on who you are though i guess an opening that doesn't contain any spoilers at all is unquestionably a good thing, but it really could have tried anything else. humour is a subjective thing, so you might find some value in the attempts at comedy throughout the show. i definitely did laugh a bit as well, but it was usually At the writers rather than with them. some of what happens is just so predictable and overblown that i laughed out loud when it happened, but for the most part this show and its humour isn't the funny kind of bad. a situation that unfolds with one of the characters comes across almost as a "it's funny because he's gay" kind of moment, and i personally didn't appreciate that even though i disliked that character in general. that might've just been a dub thing though because there was a kinda weird contradiction between the dub lines and the subtitles, since i don't speak japanese switching the audio wouldn't have been helpful either so i guess i'll never know. while i'm talking about the dub though, i should say that some of the voices didn't quite match the characters, and even for the ones that did - which were by far the majority - the performances weren't the best. i'm not an expert on voice acting by any means so i don't know whose responsibility that sort of thing is, but nonetheless you're probably better off watching it subbed if you can, i personally didn't have the attention span to do so. img220(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/852325752040456194/1030459239610728469/rainbow.gif) i wasn't entirely sure about what kind of score to give this story, or whether to give it a score at all, but considering how things like praetorian's arc and johnny's development into a villain were almost completely glossed in a way that was almost like the writers went __"to show you the power of flex tape, i sawed this story in half!"__ there is only one possible score i could give. that score being an exact __50/100__, which works out because while there's a lot about it i didn't like it also had enough to it that i bothered to watch it through and that's gotta count for something, right? if you wanna see a more positive review, check out the one i wrote about parasyte [right here](https://anilist.co/review/14491). also if you're wondering why i didn't mention the primary antagonist of this story at all, it's because that part of the story unironically gave me a headache, and this review is too long as it is~~~
~~~__SUPER CROOKS REVIEW__~~~ __Date Started:__ 2021-12-04 ------------- __Date Finished:__ 2021-12-13 ~~~___SUMMARY OF REVIEW___~~~ Super Crooks, a show produced by Netflix and animated by Bones, is a charming story about a group of supervillains trying to leave their mark on the world. With a charming cast, upbeat intro/outro, a decent -though predictable- plot, and an outstanding visual style, Super Crooks definitely does not disappoint. While I would not rewatch it, I would definitely be enthusiastic about watching a second season, special, or feature film. While it won’t win any Oscars anytime soon, you could definitely find a worse way to spend your time. __SCORE: 8.8/10__ ~~~___STORY___~~~ Super Crooks, produced by Netflix and animated by [Bones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bones_(studio)), is a reversed superhero story. Rather than a typical story of heroes saving the day and fighting crime, we are shown the story of a ragtag group of supervillains led by Johnny Bolt (ジョニー・ボルト). To summarize, the first season covers various crimes, ranging from a simple prisoner breakout to a full-scale robbery of a casino on an island made of granite. The story is pleasant, and the pacing is solid throughout, though there is maybe one or two episodes where I began to question “ok so what is the point??? How is this contributing to the story????” which is a little weird for a 13-episode series. That being said, there is plenty of plot development and the story is nicely compact and does not drag on too much. I appreciate the novelty of a story about supervillains rather than superheroes, so I gave the story an improved rating for ditching the archetypical story. __SCORE: 8/10__ ~~~___CHARACTERS___~~~ The character roster is quite good. Individually, many of the supporting characters and members of Johnny Bolt’s team are uninteresting, though they shine as a group. Each character brings a different personality and quality to the table, which leads to fresh, interesting connections and authentic interactions that left me laughing and smiling several times throughout. I appreciate that Netflix manages to craft a story where the superheroes suck and we root for the villains. Character development is somewhat nonexistent, as the characters in episode 13 are mostly the exact same as the characters in episode 1, with a few exceptions. That being said, I didn’t mind the lack of character development because the majority of the characters are very well-written. Of the entire series, the standout character is Kasey (ケイシー). Kasey is Johnny’s girlfriend, and over the course of the first season she moves from annoying nagging girlfriend to a very formidable villain possessing incredible powers. Very cool. __SCORE: 9/10__ ~~~___VISUALS___~~~ The visual presentation of Super Crooks is easily its strongest selling point. At first, I was unsure how I felt about the animation style, as the slow-animated characters mixed with 3D-modelled set-pieces felt slightly mismatched to me, and I am not a fan of the use of 3D-models or cel-shaded styles. That being said, I thought the character designs were great. The superhero/supervillain costumes are familiar yet fresh. Another standout feature of the visual style is the use of colour. There is lots of colour, ranging from pastel colours to muted colours, and I found the palette to be pleasing to the eye and not distracting at all. I have very little to complain about when it comes to the visual aspect of the show. Other than a personal preference against 3D Models, the characters are animated beautifully. __SCORE: 9/10__ ~~~___INTRO/OUTRO SONG(S)___~~~ The intro for Super Crooks threw me for quite a loop when I heard it during the first episode. With a superhero/villain story, I was expecting a typical power-metal or rock song, or something else with very high energy. The intro song (Alpha – Towa Tei) is some sort of funk song, which honestly gave the show a very bright and funky vibe. I dig it. The outro song is, again, pretty upbeat and jazzy and quite casual, which gave the show a very laidback feel. I dig it. __SCORE: 9/10__ ~~~___ENJOYMENT___~~~ Subjectively speaking, the story was well-paced, the characters well-animated and written, the music was fun, and the fight sequences were well-animated. I enjoyed the show, and it was definitely above average, though I would say that there wasn’t anything that really stood out and made me sit back and say “wow.” I think that if you watch the preview trailer for the show you can basically get a really good feel, and if by the end of episode 2 you aren’t feeling the vibe then it doesn’t really change at all so you can put it down. However, I enjoyed it. I don’t think I would watch it again, but I would definitely watch a season 2. It’s not going in my hall of fame, nor will it win any Oscars (or whatever the anime equivalent to Oscars is? Who gives a shit about award shows fr fr), but I liked it. __SCORE: 8/10__ ~~~___MAIN CHARACTER CRINGE___~~~ Johnny Bolt wasn’t cringe at all. Quite charming, well-animated, well-scripted, well-dressed. Honestly you can’t ask for much more. As far as main characters go, he’s great! __SCORE: 10/10 NOT CRINGE AT ALL.__ ~~~_TL;DR: Decent show. Won't win any oscars. I wouldn't rewatch it, but I would enthusiastically watch a second season or feature film, and I definitely recommend it._ ___WEIGHTED SCORE: 8.8/10___~~~
# ~~~___Introduction___~~~ ~~~Super Crooks, airing in 2021 and made by Bones, is a polarizing show for me in almost every aspect. While I enjoyed it enough for it to be an actual decent show, I have a super hard time recommending it to others. This review will be slightly different from my other reviews as it is mostly just a list of the good and bad of the show.~~~ --------- # ~~~__Cast __~~~ Undoubtedly the strongest point of the show, _Super Crooks_' cast works so well because its likability is not limited to its Pro and Deuteragonists only, an aspect many of my top shows share. - Despite featuring a ton of characters, and much of them with their individual backstories (which some may find annoying and a point I'll address in a bit), most, if not all of these characters are really easy to get into and root for, no matter which side of the story you come from. And a large part of this is due to said backstories - although overdone with its quantity, the well-done ones are divine in their own right, ingraining their respective character into the viewers' minds fairly easily and effectively. ------ # ~~~__Scenes/Directing__~~~ - Not many praises to give here except for a couple of well-directed scenes and segments that flow fluidly into each other. - While I praised _Super Crooks_ for having some good scenes above, in reality, the structure of the show is more like 3 parts well done and 7 parts meh. The not-good scenes of this show are way too cramped, messy, and random. At times, one may wonder why the fuck they're looking at a scene completely unrelated to the previous one. - Moving on from messy scenes is the repetition of the worst parts of this show. For further clarity, I would suggest one watch about 10mins of the first episode but really, save the trouble. This show is chock full of "fanservice". The reason for the quotation marks is due to the message it's trying to send, it's not fanservice in the sense that the low shots or sex is to please the fans (though some may see it that way) but rather, it's used as a way to push the "maturity" level of the show up and I think it's fucking ridiculous. We get it, it's a series about villains but not every scene with a female has to involve sexualization or just straight-up sex. It's borderline unpleasant to sit through some of the scenes where this is present - and it is present a lot. To me, this just looks like the show is trying too hard to prove something it doesn't have to prove, and in a wrong way anyway. - Last little point is the amount of gore too since it fits with this narrative of "trying too hard". I did enjoy it and thought it was great mostly but I can totally see how some people may be turned off from it. --- # ~~~__Dialogue__~~~ Second to last point will be on dialogue but with a fair disclaimer that this is probably my most subjective take of the review since I was heavily inspired by another reviewer's take. - I didn't think I had a problem with the show's dialogue up till a certain point in the show, where it all fell apart and made me realize that all along, the dialogue is essentially the same as the breaking point, just with lesser intensity. Characters and their dialogues can be completely outrageous and I have no idea how a script like this was conceived but seriously, these characters (ESPECIALLY the main 2) are the most obnoxious beings I've seen in a while. If these dialogues were intended and meant as part of characterization I'd be okay with them but looking at the situations in which they're used, it's hard to have that faith and hope. I won't go deeper as there are story spoilers at stake so I'll just finish off this point with one word - "Undeserving" ----- # ~~~__Misc__~~~ For the final bit, some words on the events leading up to the end of this show. - I happened to stumble onto some extremely minor spoilers of the show and context and it absolutely brought to light how atrocious episodes 8 and 9 are as transition episodes. I won't say that I wish I didn't see those spoilers so I could enjoy the show more, in fact, I'm glad I did because those episodes sucked - and I'm not even a fan of the source. I can't imagine what fans of the original comic have to go through when they see this abomination of an excuse for content filling. I guess some praise has to be given to the studio for trying at least but honestly the salvage job was just awful. - Spoiler in question : ~!The original _Super Crooks_ material was only the last 3-4 episodes, with the first 9-10 being original.!~ --- # ~~~__Conclusion__~~~ ~~~All in all, _Super Crooks_ is a show where there the GOODs are good, and where the BADs are aplenty, and bad. If there are any questions of why my score is still a pass, it's because I think this is a show where if people can see the good in it, can be enjoyable. ~~~
