I wouldn't blame you if, at first glance from the trailer, some skepticisms arise. There's no need to point out that yes, the animation is hilariously bad. And I wouldn't hold it against you if you realized J.C. Staff was in charge of it, and make a subconscious effort to pretend this adaptation of this otherwise fantastic manga does not exist. Despite that, I'd suggest lending an ear as to why you should give this ONA a shot. First, let's talk about the runtime. Five episodes with a runtime of about 15 to 20 minutes doesn't seem bad, right? It's completely bingeable in a single sitting, and it's a saving grace amidst all the other criticisms I have of how the adaptation was handled. Right off the bat, I'm not a fan of the OP and ED. Credit is due in capturing the chaos Tatsu embodies through thrashy metal and raspy singing. Maybe you'd find it your cup of tea, but the fact that it's skippable makes it a lesser concern. The animation is __bad__. I'm highlighting the word __bad__ just so you know I'm absolutely serious when I say this. If you told me they started work on this back when the anime adaptation was announced, I wouldn't doubt it at all. I shudder whenever I think of Miku's zoomed-in face that is clearly unfinished, and I can only laugh at how low-effort each character's movement is. I'm sure many of you would love to tear it apart, but I actually didn't mind it that much. And it's thanks to the source material it adapts that I can even consider this a show worth watching: the manga is __great__, and I think most people can agree with me there. I cannot express how disappointed I am that it didn't get the treatment it deserves, but the voice acting and the pacing of the show is enough to merit a chuckle, to say the least. And they did have the decency to animate the cute-ass aprons most of the characters wear, so at least give them that. Even considering that, I can understand the criticisms some people might find after watching the first episode, and I can't blame them. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, and there are better ways to spend an hour of your time with, like reading the actual manga (which is, just to reiterate, __great__) or watching the bajillion other anime shows and movies available on Netflix. Here's a piece of advice I want to give to anyone pondering on whether this show is worth watching: go into it leniently. It's not the type of story that takes itself seriously, and it seems unfair to go into it expecting some outlandish adaptation (trust me, I would've loved it if it got this kind of treatment). What you'll get is a genuine laugh-out-loud show that you can turn your brain off to, to say the least. _"Aren't you just saying we should lower our expectations?"_ Pretty much. But I'd reckon you'll find it as enjoyable as I did. #~~~★★★~~~

There's one feeling that comes to mind when thinking of these few episodes, disappointment. Let's start with the elephant in the room, the animation. ___It's bad.___ It's hard to even call this an anime as most of it are still frames with little animation. It follows the manga artstyle very closely which could be seen as a plus, but offers little more than a fan-made motion manga, the sort of thing you can find for any popular series with a simple search. Visually, there is nothing that is an improvement to the manga, with many moments instead losing detail. How it got to this point I have no idea. As for the music, there's nothing special, but nothing poorly used either. The opening and ending aren't something I'm interested in personally, but fit the theme of the show so there's no complaints there. Now the voice acting on the other hand is the one part of the show that truly shines. Kenjiro Tsuda is amazing as expected, but a few of the other voice actors were able to compare quite well to his great performance. A couple years ago, Tsuda stared in a live action PV for this same material, it was smart to bring him back to reprise that role. This is possibly the only time where a live-action felt more promising to me than an anime for a manga adaption. I wonder if there is still any chance for that? I've already mentioned it before, but lets talk about the source material a little more. The manga itself is amazing and worth a recommendation to anyone looking for a good comedy manga. In every way this anime is a very faithful adaption of the manga, because of this, the material holds up quite well. This paired with the voice acting makes the anime still quite enjoyable even if the animation may detract from it. So if it's only the animation that's bad, why am I so disappointed? Because the manga deserved so much more than this. The only thing that would be a reason for watching this instead of the manga is because of the voice acting, and even then you'll end up missing out on some of the great aspects of the manga. It was difficult to determine how to rate this, it's still enjoyable but it's only enjoyable because it's supported by an amazing manga. The anime is balanced between two extremes, great VA performances and horrendous animation, making a mid-rating seem like the perfect solution. Therefore I must say, if you want to watch this, just read the manga instead. If you have a reason for not reading the manga, then go ahead and watch as it's still better than nothing, just don't expect much. There isn't much reason for watching the anime instead of the manga, and the only reasons for doing both is because the anime is short being only an hour of content and because of the voice acting.

There are expectations that people have whenever an anime adaptation, whether it be for a light novel, manga, or video game, is announced. For many in the anime community, the shows are a first glimpse into the source material, and with that knowledge, there's an expectation that there's effort put into utilizing the full potential of the anime medium to portray the characters, world, and plot beyond what the original source was capable of doing. This rings especially true for manga adaptations, where the drawings and dialogue already exist, and the anime can use its animation to bring these characters into motion; everyone who looks up a show based on a manga is expecting this going in, and it's understood that the studio will follow these unwritten expectations. Unfortunately, and rather bafflingly, Gokushufudou doesn't do this. Gokushufudou decided, instead of being an animated adaptation of the source manga, to be a motion comic with an animation budget akin to a YouTube fancomic reading. In every review, in every forum post, and in every conversation regarding this show you'll read, this point will come up because of how egregious it is. The animation is one of the worst I've ever seen from a professional studio, if it can be considered that; there's a ton of still frames where the only things that move are mouths, and most of the motion in this show comes from camera panning. Why anyone would want to make an anime where it emulates reading a manga, I do not understand, especially considering a manga _already exists_. Outside of the art direction, the show does have its highlights, but many of them you would get from the manga as well, with the exception of sound. Kenjirou Tsuda particularly stands out in this regard, with his voice bringing Tatsu's character to life. The rest of the cast does their jobs well, able to pivot through the rapid-fire subversions of expectations that make up a bulk of the show's comedy with ease. As for the music and sound effects, they're rather passable; I wouldn't consider them the greatest, but even if the show were animated well I wouldn't consider it the low point of the show. It's almost as if the original plan for this was to make an audio drama and they decided to "animate" it so it could get on television and reach a broader audience. However, outside of the sound direction, and because of the artstyle direction to emulate manga reading as much as possible, a _lot_ of this show depends on what's been provided by the manga. Considering that this is Gokushufudou, which is an incredibly hilarious manga, I can see where they were coming from; the humor is very much there in the show as well, and this is an incredibly faithful adaptation, and many defenders of the show will say that if you ignore the animation, then the show is honestly very enjoyable, and I'd agree with them. But why on _earth_ am I ignoring the animation in an _anime_? Many, many people, myself included, came into this show expecting so much more because of the quality of the manga and they wished to see the characters come to life through the magic of animation. The anime provided everything but that. The show subverted expectations, but unlike in the manga, it did so in the most unflattering way possible; disappointment was inevitable. This show is one of the very few times where it's clear just how much the anime is clinging onto its source material instead of expanding out and becoming its own thing, where it had the potential to be greater than the manga. Yet, I'm only grading it as high as I am because of things that already exist in its source manga. Just read the manga. If you're watching the show, you're basically doing that anyway.

#~~~____Gokushufudo____~~~ ~~~img220(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/781121900033736737/829837716334182410/f8k6jz83xjv51.jpg)~~~ ~~~Gokushufudo is something that could've been much better, but thanks to JC Staff and Netflix, it couldn't live up to its full potential. **Animation**: I want to start with this first since it's my biggest issue with the anime. There is no animation. It's non-existent. It's Queen Bee level of "animation". Actually, that'd be too big of an insult even for Queen Bee. I'd go as far as to say it's worse. And we're talking about a show produced by Netflix, the biggest streaming site in the world. It's an insult to animators to call something like this an anime. All the effort animators such as Arifumi Imai, Keiichiro Watanabe, Yutaka Nakamura, riooo, Norio Matsumoto have to put is insane. Then, there is this joke of an anime which looks like it took less than a week to make. JC Staff and Netflix should stay away from anime. I seriously don't know how you can come up with such an idea and be like "This slideshow is going to work. It's gonna please them." You can't get any lazier than this. **Sound**: The music wasn't really bad for a comedy, but it's not good either. It's average. The best thing about this show is the voice acting. Tatsu's voice is exactly how I imagined it in my head when reading the source material. Kenjirou Tsuda did an excellent job. He made the show bearable. This adaptation didn't deserve someone as amazing as him. **Plot**: There isn't really much plot here, so don't go in the show expecting to find something serious or deep. It's just a former yakuza doing dumb things which are fun to watch/read. I can see how some people could get bored of the comedy since it uses the same jokes a lot, but I personally enjoy them, and don't think I'll ever get bored of them. **Characters**: Our main character is great and really fun to watch. He'll always find a way to make you burst out laughing. The rest of the cast isn't bad either, but Tatsu is the one that stands out the most. I'd suggest the manga over the anime since the facial expressions still look better in the manga which are important for the jokes, and Gokushufudo's artstyle works better in the black and white format. I'll give this a 4/10. You might be wondering why since I praised a lot of aspects of it. This is supposed to be an anime, but it is simply not one. It's just a colored version of the manga but with voice acting. Kenjirou Tsuda is the only redeeming thing about Gokushufudo's anime. Something like this doesn't deserve anything higher. It's unfortunate. Everyone, including me, was looking forward to it. Another anime with wasted potential. Thank you for reading my complaints.~~~

When I first saw the trailer I was incredibly put off and honestly disappointed as I love the manga and was hoping it would get the full adaptation treatment. After watching it I was not disappointed. The adaptation is very true to the manga... maybe a little too much but its manga panel style and simple animation worked very well for the punch lines and the excentric poses of Tatsu the immortal dragon. By the end of the first episode, I was hardly paying attention to the animation at all and was just enjoying the ride and laughing through the hilarious moments. All of the jokes landed and translated very well into this form and I would like to believe the animation helped them land alongside the amazing voice acting. Kenjirou Tsuda who voiced Tatsu and also played him in the live-action version is perfect for the role. His voice was just how I imagined Tatsu to sound and even better. Not to mention the voice acting made lots of the jokes that much funnier! The OP and ED are perfect for the Yakuza aesthetic and fit the over-the-top intense and hilarious tone of Way of the Househusband. Uchikubi Gokumon Doukoukai did a perfect job on the Opening and Ending. Some extra little bonus points I wanna give the show, They included the short stories of Gin the cat and they made a theme song for all the moments that Policure the anime was mentioned! The animation can be a little rough and is far from perfect and had some pretty ugly frames but it still manages to capture the energy and powerful aura of a yakuza specifically Tatsu the immortal dragon. It might not be for everyone but I watched it all with my friends and we were laughing and enjoying almost every moment! Hmm, maybe you critics need friends to watch this with haha!! I think at the very least give the animated adaptation of Way of the househusband a chance so more people can get a true taste of Tatsu the immortal Dragon. If the animation didn't do it for you and you found some sort of joy I HIGHLY RECCOMEND you give the manga a chance! I promise this series will pull some laughs from you!! Each episode is around 17 minutes and there are only 5 episodes with a total run time of about 1.48 hours so this makes this a quick and very binge-able show! If you are looking for something to relax to and get some easy laughs Way of the househusbands 5 episode Netflix adaption is perfect! I'm giving this a high score because I genuinely enjoyed it regardless of how little animation the adaptation featured. Way of the househusband is the perfect anime to relax and expect a ton of laughs from and It still really holds up!! GIVE IT A SHOT ANIKI img220(https://i0.wp.com/all-comic.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Screen-Shot-2020-02-22-at-11.59.00-AM.png?resize=563%2C485)

~~~Gokushufudo A show with great potential, ruined by it's terrible animation. img150(https://s4.anilist.co/file/anilistcdn/media/anime/cover/large/bx125426-TBAaZpTV7dYd.jpg) __Animation:__ The animation of the series is by far the worse thing I have ever experienced in my 2 - 3 years watching Anime, and is the ONLY complaint I have about this show. To put it simply, there is no animation. It felt like I was watching someone play a visual novel with voice acting. __It's that bad.__ The most "animated" parts is when the studio bothered to add a little bit of motion to the characters by adding some good S_DissolveShake (Sony Vegas Pro reference haha). It's a mere slideshow of the manga. This is by far the __laziest__ most disappointing animation I will probably ever behold with my own eyes. __Story:__ The plot isn't very deep or memorable which is actually a good thing in this genre. It's about an ex-Yakuza doing things around his neighborhood. The whole gimmick is that he's intimidating and does everything in an intimidating way. Overall a nice story that makes the show interesting, although I do think that this format could get repetitive very quickly. The way the show is formatted reminds me of the anime [Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san ](https://anilist.co/anime/99468/Teasing-Master-Takagisan/)in which each episode consists of multiple, short stories. I enjoyed the segments where we got to see his cat go for a walk around the neighborhood, it was always nice to see that. __Characters:__ Our main character Tatsu is a nice character because of how he handles things. He does things in an intimidating way, similar to how a Yakuza would do it. Out of all of the cast he's the one that stands out the most. Of course the other characters do an excellent job too. The other character that stands out the most to me is probably his friend/former subordinate Masa. He see him very early on in the Anime and soon becomes a frequent recurring character. He treats Tatsu like he's still his boss even after their group disbanded which I think made for some pretty funny scenarios. __Final Thoughts:__ I think that Gokushufudo gave me a few laughs here and there and the story is really nice. The thing holding this anime back is the animation. I can't even call this an "Anime" when it feels like I'm reading a manga that automatically turns the page. Don't let the bad animation discourage you from wanting to watch this show though. If you think that the story seems captivating or interesting, feel free to watch it! Just... don't have your expectations too high. If this show had standard animation I would've given it a higher rating, close to around 6 - 7. I know I've mentioned this in my review countless times but I'm astonished on how this even got the heads up to be distributed. I'll definitely consider reading the manga due to the story captivating me.~~~
Gokushufudou or as the English title implies is a story that revolves around a house husband but with a twist. It had all the elements of a __what could have been a great anime__. A unique story, superb comedic timings, banger OP and ED and great voice acting. What it lacked behind is the fundamental aspect of what anime is all about, that is, animation. Let's talk about each aspect of the anime one by one starting from the great negative. __Animation__ Animations is, to sum up in one word, horrendous. Frames are mostly still, characters are traced, badly animated with only their lips moving during conversation. I get they are trying to add manga like punch to the comedy but i think they simply forget why and what people watch anime for. __Character Designs__ Character designs are good and there is really nothing much to talk about. Tatsu character design was already _ahem_ hard boiled and Miku is really cute. Side character designs are fine as well. __Story__ There is no deep or hidden story line. It's a straight up comedy slice of life about a past yakuza turned house husband and his wife. There are some interesting side characters which add interest to the lore but those episode are really far in between. __Comedy__ Surprisingly anime was somewhat funny. First episode was good but once you focus on the animation, it get's difficult to pay attention to the rest of the show. If you can ignore the animation, you can actually find a few giggles in between. __Music__ Op and Ed, like i already mentioned are banger. I straight up loved and laughed more during the Opening and ending then the actual first episode, remembering the funny moments of the same episode from the manga. Rest of the background music is fine and helps add power to the punchlines but you will, again, have to focus on the joke rather the animation. __Voice Acting__ This is what actually saves the anime for me. I am so glad Kenjiro Tsuda reprises his role as tatsu from the promotional videos. He has done an amazing job giving the series whatever charm it has. Other voice actors also did a great job. if you will laugh, or enjoy the show, that would be only because of the tremendous efforts of the voice actors. Fabulous job, literally saved the series from being absolute demolished. __Overall__ Adaptation is funny. Animations is terrible. You won't be missing anything if you don't watch it. Hate to be that guy but manga is definitely better. Only person who should take responsibility for this adaptation is the producer for giving the terrible idea of adapting series as in manga. Rest of the staff, directors, animators did okay with what they could. Thanks for adapting this but don't do terrible experiments like this with popular series like The Way of The House Husband.
No dia 08 de Abril de 2021 eu resolvi assistir ao anime Gokushufudou, pois era um anime curto, tanto em número de episódios, quanto em tempo de cada episódio e aqui está a minha critíca: Inicialmente ressaltarei o roteiro e posteriormente os aspectos técnicos. 1-ROTEIRO O enredo do anime gira em torno de um ex-Yakuza( o nome que é denominado para a máfia japonesa) que se apaixonou e resolveu se tornar dono de casa, um enredo semelhante ao mangá _sakamoto days_, mas esse mostra através de esquetes episódicas as situações cômicas que o protagonista chamado Tatsu, e nisso o anime se mostra bem competente, pois dei bastante risadas com ele, pois ao mesmo que ele é extremamente dedicado ao trabalho doméstico, o linguajar dele é completamente voltado para os seus tempos servindo a Yakuza onde era apelidado de Tatsu o imortal, o que gera cenas muito divertidas com as outras donas de casa que interagem com o protagonista. Um exemplo bem legal no argumento anteriormente dito é a cena onde ele está tendo aula de Yoga e durante as posições de relaxamento, ele associa cada posição há uma situações específica durante seus tempos de Yakuza. Devo destacar que os secundários são os causadores da comédia do anime, uma vez que, são eles que geralmente ficam chocados com as situações causadas pelo Tatsu, dou destaque para a esposa dele que é a Miku, que gera um clima descontraído em total contraste coma aura ameaçadora do Tatsu. O maior ponto positivo do roteiro é o fato de serem esquetes episódicas onde as histórias quase não tem ressonância umas com as outras, logo são apenas situações pontuais e cômicas, devo destacar que o _timing _das piadas eram excelentes. __Roteiro 6/10__ 2-ASPECTOS TÉCNICOS O maior ponto negativo do anime é que NÃO existe MOVIMENTAÇÃO, é literalmente um frame com as linhas da boca mexendo, tornando a animação nada mais que as páginas do mangá sendo coloridas e dubladas pelos _seiyus_ e esse fato me incomoda muito, pois não importa o quanto o "anime" seja engraçado, pelo fato de ser um audiobook do mangá, isso acaba por enterrar qualquer chance da obra ser mais conhecida, não que precise ser uma animação de ponta ou algo parecido com animes como Konosuba e Nichijou, pois o charme do anime se encontra nas piadas, mas que fosse algo como é a animação de Saiki Kusuo no Psy Nan ou Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou algo simples, porém com alguma movimentação, mas nem os gifs dos personagens andando enquanto o ambiente se afasta existem nesse anime e isso é ridículo, pois meio que faz a produtora e o estúdio de animação nos fazer engolir que só basta você dublar as falas e fazer cenas coloridas que basta para algo ser chamado de anime, e caso seja realmente isso, tenho certeza que outras pérolas como esse anime virão no futuro. Eu consigo dizer que esse é facilmente k pior trabalho que eu já vi da JC Staff em questão de movimentação, por que pelo menos o design era coerente durante todos os episódios, para mim esse anime vai ser a mancha na carreira da Diretora Chiaki Kon desse projeto. O único ponto positivo que vale a pena destacar nesse "anime" é a dublagem do Tatsu que é dublado pelo _seiyu_ o Kenjirou Tsuda que dublou personagens como o Nanami de Jujutsu Kaisen, o Joker de Fire Force e o Overhaul de BnH, e devo dizer que a voz tornou todas as piadas e cenas do Tatsu muito engraçadas, pelo fato de ele ter uma voz bem grave e potente, eu realmente gostei bastante da dublagem dele. __Aspectos técnicos 2/10__ Se vc gostou do que leu ou achou que faltou alguma coisa só precisa comentar no status postado. Obrigado a você caso tenha lido até aqui e um bom dia para você.
__Gokushufudou: How a good anime has exposed the one dimensional lens that we look through when judging shows. __ _Hello everyone! This is a spoiler free review so feel free to read without worry. This will probably be a bit of a lengthy review as I believe this show has multiple aspects to it that need to be addressed._ I know the title of this review seems weirdly philosophical but I implore you to read this review with an open mind. My goal here is not to disrespect the opinion of people who dislike the show, but to simply and hopefully help people understand why this show is a bit more than “an animation failure”. With that said, let’s get into it~ First and foremost, I want to start by talking about the story itself; As someone who’s read the manga and very much enjoyed the short nature of each chapter, I was pretty happy to know the anime followed the same format. Short, to the point with a funny gag at the end of each segment. The anime is comprised of 5 episodes, each one being about 15ish minutes; The story follows a former yakuza boss who’s might was unrivalled, Tatsu the immortal dragon. Tatsu “retired” from his old yakuza life got married, and became a househusband who basically takes care of the household while his wife works. A very simple story, and the punchline? The dude is downright scary and still operates like yakuza, including in his everyday life chores and interactions with people. And so just based on my above description, I hope people are at least able to see the comedic attraction this show creates. Just a very manly yakuza, being a househusband. And I think what really makes this story worth to watch is how short each “daily interaction” (aka segment/chapter) are. Each episode is divided into roughly 6 segments, each segment covering a different event in the daily life of Tatsu as he juggles between his old life as a yakuza and a househusband. Most segments have their own “end joke” and its own humour, which is something I enjoyed. I won’t try to tell you that each segment was hilarious, because some of them just didn’t make me laugh as much as others. And that’s fine. The story as a whole is enjoyable and a very fun watch, comedy is hard and sometimes the joke just isn’t meant for you. This is why I enjoyed the short nature of the segments, if that segment isn’t for you then the anime has 5 more attempts to make you laugh throughout the episode. Overall, it was fun and it stayed somewhat true to the manga if that’s something any of you would like to take up. Now let’s get to the controversial part~ The animation!! I won’t lie, it took me a while to figure out how I want to review this section. As you read through this section, I would like to ask of you to try and keep this following statement in mind as I tackle this discussion: Gokushufudou has highlighted how one dimensional our thinking (as anime fans) has become when judging anime. I will start this section by saying and emphasizing this: __the animation is practically non existent__. And I think the presentation of the anime through this lack of animation has, quite understandably, angered or disappointed a lot of fans; The anime community has created kind of a “peak standard” for shows which include: animation, music, art, story etc.. Essentially, a show is only good if it scores high points in every one of these categories. What that created is a very one dimensional approach on judging animes. We rely solely on the sum of all these parts rather than acknowledging that some parts are in fact, not necessary for the success and enjoyment of a show. In fact, I’m not even sure how better animation would actually elevate the show. A lot of people have referred to the animation as simply, a coloured manga with a few animation. And personally, I very much enjoyed this “coloured manga” approach. Unless animation is being used to elevate certain aspects of beauty or themes that an anime tries to portray (Violet evergarden is a great example), then I believe animation plays a very little role in actually making a good show. The anime simply wants to portray the everyday life of a househusband in its most simple, comedic and exaggerated form. Anime itself should be judged on the way it chooses to present its content, rather than having to set every anime to a very narrow standard that is inapplicable to most shows. To me, it’s almost like comparing apples to oranges; While they do have similarities, it would be wrong to judge an apple based on the standards of an orange. Watching this anime was almost like I was actually reading the manga. It was weird but I liked that feeling. It was like I was reading a very elevated manga (if that makes sense) where its elements are being portrayed through a basic animation. It created very exaggerated scenes as the emphasis of the animation was on the facial expressions; It was like watching animated stills of the manga. A bit hard for me to put into words but that’s how I kind of see it and very much liked it! And while I have more I want to say about other aspects of the show, for the sake of time I’m going be moving on to our last section of score evaluation. As discussed I believe the story to be quite funny, moving away from very cliche and repetitive plots. Actually in a sense, it’s pretty cool how they can portray a househusband (who’s usually seen in a pretty low light by society) to be this macho, strong and cool character. Because let’s face it, TATSU IS COOL. The OP and ED of the anime is very meh but really, has no impact on the anime itself. Personally I will be giving this show a 90/100, this reflects my enjoyment and entertainment as I watched the show. However from a more objective opinion, taking into account every factor I have talked about. This show is pretty binge worthy, but I feel like they could’ve tried harder to sharpen the quality of the art; They had the time since they didn’t focus on the animation at all. It was a good watch, but probably wouldn’t be worth rewatching. Overall, I’d give it a very nice score of 80/100. Anime is an art form, different expression of artists and authors is something that adds layers of complexity to the anime genre. If every show was held to the same standard, variety will cease to shine through and only stale content will ever be made. Thank you all for reading through this very lengthy review. I hope this was not intimidating for new fans still waiting to watch the show, and I hope I’ve helped convince some of you to see this show in a more positive light. If not, then that’s okay! Variety and different taste is what drives creativity!
# Story The story is about Tatsu, who stops being a yakuza (a japanese criminal) and instead becomes a househusband. This anime consists of funny situations he encounters, and little conflicts with old rivals and friends from his past as a criminell. # Theme and what to expect from it The anime is mainly a comedy and has a very ironic, dry sense of humor which I personally really enjoyed. It doesnt take it self to serious, which is really important in my opinion when it comes to comedy anime like this one. The music isnt anything to special, but it fits the show really well and the opening is good as well (but the ending isnt that interesting). But just dont expect to much of a plot, because its basically just a collection of funny scenes that arent connected to each other (for the most part). Which is also why its pretty much impossible to get spoiled because nothing too dramatic happens (and its also just five episodes by now, so yeah). # Animation (and why its not that important) Although the animation takes some time to get used to, the overall art and style isnt that bad and the jokes and good humor easily make up for it. Its just a little bit confusing why it seems that Netflix didnt put that much money into the animation, when they managed to produce a show like Kakegurui (which looks amazing to me) but then refuse to put the same money and effort into this project. And because the show only consists of short and funny comedy scenes, the animation is __still enough__ for the jokes to work. This isnt an action based shounen anime or anything like that, which is why the animation is less important in my opinion (but it would still be nice to get better animation in the future). I still think watching the anime is a better experience than reading the manga, just because you have the great voice acting that makes it a little bit more funny and enjoyable to watch than just reading it (That doesnt mean that the manga is bad). # Conclusion and final thoughts: Im personally really keen on watching the next season once it releases, and i hope that maybe they will then rework the animation, so that fans can enjoy the show more than by now. Overall its still a solid little comedy if you just want to laugh and relax, but dont expect to much to happen when it comes to the plot. This is __not__ the type of show thats gonna blow you away animationwise, but instead the type to just shut your brain off to and enjoy the comedy. Yes. The Animation could have been better. But did that stop me from enjoying every second of it? Absolutly not. So, if you just dont expect that much from this show, I think still youre gonna have a great time watching it.
In hindsight I probably should've expected this especially since it's a 5ep ONA with Netflix and J.C. Staff (both of which are mixed bags when it comes to anime), but I was blinded by excitement over the manga getting an adaptation of sorts. The whole thing is kind of a hot mess and I'm not exactly sure who I'm supposed to point my finger at, but my point is you shouldn't waste your time on this ONA unless you're the type of person (like me) who plays something in the background while doing work. The biggest and most obvious issue is the lack of animation in an Original Net __Animation__. There is nearly no animation other than the mouth. It was so scarce that I was surprised when a character actually walked for a few seconds. I'm honestly convinced that the budget went to the OP and ED. Now, this is obviously not uncommon and sometimes you do get the odd ONA that straight up takes the illustrations from the manga and just colour it in with some VA work done (usually to promote the manga), but we're in the 2020's now and I've seen a large amount of amazingly animated ONAs (The Korean ONA _A Day Before Us_ by Lico comes to mind). https://anilist.co/anime/102425/Yeonae-Haru-Jeon/ Furthermore, this manga isn't a small name, it's quite popular which was more surprising that money was spent on translating this to the screen only to be tarnished like this. It's practically the manga but with colour and sound. I might as well just read then (sorry anime only fans). Not everything about this ONA was terrible though; the VA work was quite well done, but I thought that some of the audio quality was slightly off? I found that certain characters were louder than others and some of the sound effects were also louder than some of the characters which I found a little odd. Overall, I was just so stunned by the treatment of this anime that I had to turn to the internet to make sure I wasn't the only one who was surprised and disappointed by this work. As an art student who gets evaluated for animations (above other things), I can tell you that if a student were to hand this in to the professor they would absolutely fail. I'm not sure if my review score would even be an attainable mark if this were to be evaluated. Maybe I'm being too hard on this, but it pains me every time I remember that someone paid for this and this was actually released on Netflix (although Netflix does have its fair share of shockingly horrible content but that's a story for another day). Now that I'm done ranting about the quality of the actual product, who am I supposed to thank for this mess? Netflix? J.C. Staff? The mangaka? Myself? Well, from my understanding, Netflix basically greenlit this and paid for the manga to be adapted while J.C. Staff was responsible for how this turned out. I'm not sure if the mangaka (and associates) were aware that this was the route that J.C. staff was going with so I don't think I can blame them. I would definitely say that I shouldn't have been as expectant as I should've been because I wouldn't have been so let down. But let's go back to Netflix and J.C. Staff. Unlike their live action shows/movies, I don't think Netflix cares all that much about what goes around with anime as long as they think it'll be popular (evident with _Seven Deadly Sins s3*_), https://anilist.co/anime/108928/Nanatsu-no-Taizai-Kamigami-no-Gekirin/ but I think most of the blame has to be on J.C. Staff. Although I can't read kanji, I can certainly read English. Where am I going with this? Well, when you look at the credits, you can see that this anime's been outsourced (any many animes are. I won't tell you whether outsourcing is good or bad when it comes to animation since it really depends on the POV). When you outsource, you're risking the quality of the animation, but this risk really differs depending on the company. Clearly, J.C. Staff wasn't dealt with a good deck, but when you look at their history record, can you say that it was just bad luck? I'm thinking of their more recent works: _OPM 2_ and the _Shokugeki_ series*. https://anilist.co/anime/97668/One-Punch-Man-2/ https://anilist.co/anime/109963/Shokugeki-no-Souma-Shin-no-Sara/ In the end, all of this is just an individual's opinion and the only way to know if you'll like it or hate it is for you to watch it yourself. Either way, I hope this was helpful in even the slightest bit and if not, I'm sorry for wasting your time. To end it off on a good note, the one thing I really enjoyed were the shorts of the MC's pet cat adventures. It's been a while since I read Gokushufudou, so I can't recall if those shorts were in the manga too. Oh well... *I haven't watched these, rather they were experiences that I heard second-hand and online.
__This review will be spoiler-free __ __FYI, i was caught up with the manga before the show came out. __ So, where do I start... The Gokushufudou anime is amazing. That's right, i said the Gokushufudou anime is amazing. Why's that? Well that's why I'm writing this. Keep reading (and watching a ton of GIF's). img220(https://64.media.tumblr.com/34e14d14aa27da276538872eb3df9224/3072201093670a37-b2/s640x960/cf731d595a3341a0ed7c9fb9b78a2658c4a523fb.gifv) I'll start by saying that Gokushufudou is a MOTION COMIC, NOT AN ANIME. Kousoke Oono (the mangaka) wanted it to be like this and I think he made a good choice. Netflix fucked up (as always) and marketed it as an full-on anime, which it isn't. And as much as I wanted it to be a real anime, you gotta admit that it was fantastic in its motion comic form. The animation combines so well with the style of humor of the manga. I have to admit, there are some lazy sketches, and the animation is not perfect but it's fantastic. That style of animation has a focus on the art and I love it. I also think that this style of animation is good for the show because it makes it unique. Now that I told you why the animation is great, let's talk about the other stuff. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- img220(https://64.media.tumblr.com/91958e553a4ae976e469819fa36b8877/ab901b1dd1753f42-01/s540x810/e0d5e3b8c8addb8814f5f1df2c8f0915b3eddd0e.gifv) I'll talk about the voice acting now. Kenjiro Tsuda is a very good VA and he couldn't be any more perfect for this role. Tatsu is perfect for Kenjiro Tsuda and it's my favorite role of him until now. I don't think I can say any more about this, but the voice acting alone is a reason to watch this as it is very very good. Now onto the plot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ img220(https://64.media.tumblr.com/7ec96500b1a869ce359b20573b163798/8b16a148776441af-17/s640x960/91690465524b12c787cf38149db2ed8efa45049f.gifv) Its source material is very good. It is a weird but funny manga. The manga is absolutely stupid but i love it. The concept is fantastic. I mean, a Yakuza who is a house~~wife~~ husband! How cool is that? Very cool. img220(https://c.tenor.com/YJ7DE_gex4MAAAAd/gokushufudou.gif) I want this review to be on the top ones, because there are only reviews saying the show is mediocre, when it's actually pretty good. People don't understand how the author wanted the anime to be like this, he didn't want it to be an anime, he wanted it to be a motion comic. If you read it all, thank you. This was my rant on how Gokushufudou is good, not perfect but very very good. Now that i finished have a GIF of Tatsu hula-hooping. img220(https://c.tenor.com/Fgfrjt8wOsUAAAAC/gokushufudou.gif) _This was my first review, i plan on doing more reviews and to improve my reviewing skills, please message me if i misspelled something because I am not a natural english speaker. Produced by Netflix through J.C. Staff, it becomes very obvious why so many would feel like this is a poor adaptation to a beloved Manga .Even as an anime only viewer I can certainly understand why people would be disappointed . Created by Kousuke Oono, Gokushufudou or The Way of The Househusband, focuses on Tatsu, a retired Yakuza who was a very tough man, now turned househusband who goes about everyday life and tasks in a fairly humorous manner, usually giving off an intimidating aura and applying references and past experiences for the most mundane tasks. I was actually intrigued by this theme alone as its rare in media to see someone in organized crime actually make it out of the life, but to do so and not be completely pulled back in is a fascinating story beat. I want to reiterate what others have stated in that this isn't really a typical anime, in fact, its more like a motion comic or animated Manga. Its also a pretty short series with each season or part consisting of 5 episodes that are at most 20 minutes long. Within these episodes you have several "skits" or "chapters". This is very much a comedy that uses its above premise in a very dry manner which does work quite well, the pacing also moves at fast speed which can sometime end abruptly for solid comedic effect, being episodic in nature makes it hit or miss which of course is only natural not every joke will be for everybody. As far as the animation goes, while I don't know if I would say its necessarily bad, although I totally get why people would feel that way, I would more so say that it was an unsuccessful experiment. I've read conflicting things on as to why the choice for this particular style was chose, I've seem some claim Kousuke Oono wanted this while I also read an interview with Director Chiaki Kon who stated "I work closely with the J.C. Staff production team. From the beginning, my producer made it clear that we should “make an anime similar to the experience of reading the manga.” I found this briefing challenging as it was a slightly different approach. Coming up with the right camera work was really difficult. I tried many options, even if it was just splitting up parts of the panels and using a sliding technique. There were a lot of challenges in this series that I had never encountered before" The choice of Op an ED for this was bit odd as well, while I like the genre, a kind of hard rock almost thrash metal combo, I don't know if it fit the overall show, maybe Tatsu's demeanor and attitude though. Other than Tatsu is shown to be very threatening but also caring in his own odd fashion which is a joy to watch, we also have his wife Miku who I feel has great chemistry with him on top of several other characters from his previous endeavors in crime. I decided on a whim to watch the English dub and was pleasantly surprised on how well Tatsu and Miku's VAs did, Johan Scott did a tremendous job capturing the essence of Tatsu which when having to live up to Kenjirou Tsuda is no small task. Overall Thoughts As I continue my anime watching and reviewing journey, I'm coming to the conclusion that episodic anime just might not be my thing, I tend to gravitate to ones that at least have a main focus overall or where the episodic nature is very minor which Is why even thought I enjoy the premise and comedy, I found myself constantly wishing there was more story and character development. Tatus has great chemistry with pretty much all of the supporting cast and elevated whoever he is with on screen. The animation is something that was kind of interesting at first but ended feeling very limited in its overall presentation and the OST is a very mixed bag. I don't know if I could recommend this to someone without first warning them of what the animation is actually like, but I would also say that its short and easily bingeable.
