I hope that this just helps you get an idea of what the anime I am talking about is like and form a basic and general consensus on it. The ratings I give anime and manga are mostly my personal overall enjoyment. This review will not contain unmarked spoilers. I have not read the light novel (the source material of the series). With the location already being unusual enough, strange occurrences only further establish this war as one clearly not conventional. >A missing Servant class... Impossible Servant summonings... A nation shrouded in secrecy... And a city created as a battleground. Just what is the truth behind it all?
~~~__Feel free to skip the following section if you do not care about the Fate universe and/or Strange Fake's placement in it.__~~~ #~~~__Background information__~~~ Usually this is not a section I put in my reviews but given it is a part of the Fate franchise, I felt as though it was necessary to do so. For those who may not know first started as a visual novel under the name of Fate/Stay Night (although the original release was adults only, it eventually got a re-release making it for all ages). This visual novel would obtain animated adaptations for all three of its routes, however the first adaptation is not completely faithful to the first route for it includes elements of the other routes mixed in. Since then, the Fate franchise has grown, with new entries in the form of visual novels, light novels, manga, anime, etc. growing the universe. They may be a part of the Stay Night franchise or branch off into a completely different timeline. Strange Fake is one such example. Fate's extended universe is extremely complicated, and I am certainly not the most qualified to talk about it, but I think it would be good at least to get an understanding of where Strange Fake stands in comparison to the rest of the series. To help with this, let us employ the use of this [timeline](https://www.reddit.com/r/typemoon/comments/9svgow/unlimited_title_works_the_ultimate_timeline_of/?sort=new) constructed by the Reddit user [Draconix814](https://reddit.com/user/Draconix814). ~~~img620(https://libreddit.kavin.rocks/img/6fz5fzz6sfv11.png)~~~ ~~~__That is... a lot.__~~~ This just goes to show how much the franchise has grown since its beginnings. But most of what is on there is of no relevance right now, so let’s narrow it down a little. ~~~img620(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/848123679714836530/1127196673165234207/image.png)~~~ According to Draconix814, Fate/strange Fake placement within the main timeline is shrouded in uncertainty, with what comes before not exactly clear, seemingly after the Fifth Holy Grail War (i.e. the mainline series). This fact is upheld by the fact that Strange Fake takes elements from the preceding entries (such as [Lord El-Melloi II-sei](https://anilist.co/character/16023) making an appearance) so it could be said Strange Fake is just an alternate timeline that branches off just after the events of Stay Night...

If only the Nasuverse was that simple...

If one were to do some more research on this one would find that it *also* takes elements from the Tsukihime series, which was made before Stay Night and is a part of the extended universe as a whole. According to the creator of both the Tsukihime and Fate series, Strange Fake is in its [own timeline](https://www.reddit.com/r/grandorder/comments/65e3fm/nasus_blog_april_15th_2017_clarified_the), being a mix of the aforementioned timelines. This makes sense, given that a ~ is in this series, which is uncharacteristic of the Fate timelines.!~ Furthermore, the time it takes place in can be contested, with some challenging the year of 2014 that is within this timeline. With what came before not being exactly clear - especially given that the series is still releasing as of writing this review - the answer remains unclear. So, with this limited knowledge I can summarise it this way; Strange Fake is a deviation from the main timeline which takes elements of both the Fate and Tsukihime universe. Hopefully that is easy enough to understand. And really, you **do not** spend hours scouring through wiki pages to get even a glimmer of understanding of the series, you can enjoy it regardless.

Do I regret doing that? Uh...

#~~~____Plot____~~~ With only an hour of content to delve into, there is not too much to discuss in terms of the plot. In essence, this special is quite similar to the first episode of the Fate/Zero anime, with it being longer than the rest of the episodes and serving as an introduction to the majority of characters that will be present throughout the series. Despite the runtime of this episode, the number of characters it introduces (even disregarding all of the worldbuilding) is considerably large. Whilst this can serve to be a detriment, having to potentially rush through things more, I think in this case it actually worked in favour of the series. See, Strange Fake is a series with its central themes focusing on mystery as well as truth and lies (at least, that is the impression I got from watching this). The limited runtime forced shorter unveiling on the cast, hence increasing the secrecy surrounding them. You do not know that much about them, but that only entices you to want to know more about them. Mystery is one of my favourite genres, and this easily got my attention from the get-go because of it. ~~~img620(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/848123679714836530/1127205945739579432/191.png)~~~ Other than that, plot wise not too much else occurs within this one episode. Some heroic spirit summons happen, character backstories are given, and worldbuilding happens. I should touch on the worldbuilding for a moment, as it is important. For, Strange Fake is no ordinary Holy Grail war, and the worldbuilding makes that starkly clear. It tells you something *is* off about this war, with one class not being summoned to the odd location for the war, and yet little more is told. Once again, this feeds into the mysterious nature of this series, and only grabbed my interest even more.
#~~~__Characters__~~~ Given the nature of this anime, I will not be going into every character in detail. I will go over some of the more significant ones, as well as giving some general words surrounding the rest of the cast. As for the cast as a whole, it looks promising. There is a wide variety of individuals boasting different personalities and alignments, which I can certainly see making for engrossing conflicts between the characters as the series goes on. There are, to no surprise, characters that reflects tropes seen within anime. There is the overly optimistic yet promising hero, the playful girl, an arrogant authority figure, the calm and stoic leader, all characteristics familiar to a wide range of media. It is too early to say whether these characters will fall too deeply into the trap of being a trope, but I am hopeful. ~~~img620(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/848123679714836530/1127207409799135292/192.png)~~~ With a majority of the cast, there was either enough backstory or mystery surrounding them that made it enjoyable for me to watch. Some characters only got a little screentime, but I was nevertheless interested in watching them and curious as to what the future holds for them. Although some characters were admittedly a bit annoying for my tastes, it is not as bad as others I have encountered in the past. It was bearable.
#~~~__Animation__~~~ There is already action to be seen in this special, so its animation can be seen to its full extent right away. ~~~img620(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/848123679714836530/1127209177907986504/193.png)~~~ The action scenes were accompanied with animation that made it all the more captivating to watch. Save for one scene in particular, I had no issues with the animation.
#~~~__Fate's "watch order"__~~~ ~~~img620(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/848123679714836530/1127214249656209450/194.png)~~~ Ah yes, the dreaded question. "When should I watch this? Which Fate should I watch first?". An often-asked question with many answers. Although there are many approaches you could take, using the background information explored at the beginning of this review I can arrive at an answer. First and foremost, I would **not** recommend Strange Fake as your first Fate. Whilst there is certainly no problem starting with this one, others can provide a greater insight into the series and give greater enjoyment to the viewer. Other entries are more popular and central to the Fate universe as a whole. There is also the fact that in terms of anime this is all that one has to go off for now, whereas many others are already completed. I believe that Strange Fake works best with those who already have knowledge on the Holy Grail War system, for it allows for further engrossment into what sets Strange Fake apart. If one were to start with Strange Fake, then the oddities it presents will have little impact, which is what I feel to be a major part of this series. With this in mind, what I would personally recommend is starting with the mainline series first - being [Stay/Night](https://anilist.co/anime/356/Fatestay-night/) and [Zero](https://anilist.co/anime/10087/FateZero/) - and then moving onto Strange Fake if you feel like you want more Fate content. You could watch others such as [Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note](https://anilist.co/anime/106918/--Grace-note/) to gain a greater understanding of the elements present in Strange Fake, but ultimately it is up to you. #~~~____Conclusion and TL;DR____~~~ Ultimately, this was an introduction to the series that made me excited to see what the rest has in store. A [complete anime series](https://anilist.co/anime/166617/Fatestrange-Fake/) was announced soon after the release of Whispers of Dawn, so now all that remains is waiting for it to come out. I would be able to recommend this to fans of the Fate series. To summarise this review: - Most of the runtime is spent introducing the cast and worldbuilding - The limited time benefits the anime as it increases the air of mystery surrounding the series - The mysterious elements of Strange Fake can easily be the most engrossing part of the anime I may have spent a bit too much time talking about the extended universe, but I hope this review turned out to be a good read for you. #__Scattered Thoughts__: Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn _(Minor spoilers present, but there's honestly not much to spoil if you know anything about it)_

When I first laid eyes on the [extended teaser](https://youtu.be/EpLKseoUV6Q?si=DaHnovp-WXWuVLWh) for this Fate/strange Fake adaptation, I could not suppress my absolute glee seeing Gilgamesh and Enkidu clash with Hiroyuki Sawano blasting in the background, slowly building to an epic crescendo that left me starved for more. Just under 10 months later, I find myself once again grinning like an absolute idiot at the exact same stand-off. And I've only watched one episode of the FGO Babylonia spin-off anime— I barely even know who Enkidu is. Once again, however, I'm left craving more, but I'm also even more excited. Gilgamesh is back in business, Jack the Ripper isn't a loli this time (I think??) thank god, there's a young master who might be in over his head, one of the other masters is clinically insane, doggo, the police are a magic-wielding militia: what's not to love about this mess? Fate magic systems and lore are as barely-sensical as ever and I have no idea what's going on, but I wouldn't have it any other way. As a prequel, this special strikes an excellent balance of raw excitement and captivating mystery. It effectively weaves together the backdrop of this impending Holy Grail War by introducing and providing insight into many new characters' motivations and goals, all the while keeping the giddy Fate fan in me eagerly anticipating what's to come. Sure, there are some questionable moments in the animation quality that made me laugh out loud, but the ufotable-esque climax certainly compensates in terms of sheer marvel. A-1 seems like they have put in some serious work here, and if they can maintain or even improve this trajectory during the TV show season proper, we'll likely have something excellent on our hands. Do you need to watch the other Fate material before this? Probably yes for some additional context, as there are a lot of references and Easter eggs, as well as some basic concepts and rules about the Fate's traditional Holy Grail War that aren't explicitly explained. But even if you just know the basics— pairs of masters and servants play battle royale for the all-powerful wish-granting Holy Grail— it's almost certainly enough to enjoy this special and the upcoming full season. This! This is the Fate I've been longing to see again. Miss me with the big flashy number simulator ads, this is real fucking Holy Grail War right here. None of that pansy ass dick tugging fighting for humanity bullshit. Fate is back baby.

The title says it all! These past few weeks I have been watching nothing else but Fate. I was so captivated by this well-made battle royale, with interesting masters, servants, powers, everything honestly. But fate/strange fake -whispers of dawn- grabbed my attention right before I even started fate, and today was the day I watched it, and boy, do I have stuff to say. First off, let's start with the most important part for me: Characters. What makes battle royale anime good for me are the not-so-right-in-the-head characters, or just characters that don't feel too basic, you can recognize them right off the bat when you look at them, and I must say, strange fake absolutely DELIVERS with these interesting characters. I seriously think this might be the best cast we have gotten (Fate/zero would be second). All of them have so much charisma, it is unreal. I've got to say, out of these 55 minutes my favorite characters might be: Flatt Escardos img(https://media.tenor.com/5jfxv9re4uQAAAAC/fate-fate-strange-fake.gif) and Enkidu! img(https://media.tenor.com/WaSlrCMV4a8AAAAd/enkidu-fate.gif) They are such interesting additions to the series! Personally very excited to see if all the characters will be showcased well, but then again, the writer for this season is Ryougo Narita, who usually writes stories with large casts and all of the characters don't get lost in the writing, so I have a lot of hopes! I love the thicker outlines way more and more attention to detail rather than smoothness, which was the main focus in other fate seasons by the studios. Very happy that they decided to change it up a bit, rather than keeping it like usual. Also, the studio is A-1 PICTURES. A studio that did kaguya sama, sword art online, 86:Eighty six, so when I had seen the studio, I was not scared at all for the adaptation. I just REALLY hope they do not rush the TV show, that's all I ask. Now, let's talk about the soundtrack. HOLYYYYY.... Hiroyuki Sawano does it yet AGAIN. Seriously this man has so much talent. Every second from the music adds so much tension to the scenes, This is a professional right here! Okay, one thing that is a bit sad is that the movie is not very good for someone who just started watching fate, it does not explain the whole world well and only gives out some context for the servants and masters. So if you are interested to watch it, please make sure to finish fate/zero, fate/stay night mainly. Now, the highlight of the whole movie: Enkidu vs Gilgamesh. youtube(https://youtu.be/I-ypQw7v3_4?si=KzbxegRZLEVNBowe) This MIGHT be my favorite fight scene I have seen in a long long time, the place that they were fighting in was so captivating, especially the detailed sky. Enkidu's powers were so beautiful, I am just super glad I was able to see him in action in the movie and not wait 2 years for the tv show to be released. Gilgamesh ofc is always entertaining to watch, his voice actor does a splendid job, always with the laughs LMAO.
