Sora yori mo Tooi Basho

Mari Tamaki is in her second year of high school and wants to start something. It's then that she meets Shirase, a girl with few friends who's considered weirdo by the rest of the class and nicknamed "Antarctic" since it's all she ever talks about. Unlike her peers, Mari is moved by Shirase's dedication and decides that even though it's unlikely that high school girls will ever go to Antarctica, she's going to try to go with Shirase.

~~~*All of my reviews contain __spoilers __for the reviewed material. This is your only warning.* ~~~ ------- ~~~*TOKYO, 14,000 KM* _--signpost, seen near the end of the series_~~~ Let's be clear right from the get-go here. *A Place Further Than The Universe* is not really *about* Antarctica per se. It's about Antarctica in the same way that *Citizen Kane* is about running a newspaper business. *Further* is more akin to a young adult novel than anything else, an adventure series whose premise straddles a line between the fantastical and the merely unlikely (it is certainly *technically* possible that a group of highschoolers might someday be sent to Antarctica, but it's not exactly a safe bet, is it?), and indeed the anime's very title is an allusion to the sheer improbability of the task at hand--space seems a more likely destination than the world's final, frozen continent. What makes this work is the series' buildup, taking protagonist Kimari's desire to tag along with her friend Shirase to Antarctica from in the beginning more of a mere impulse, to a full on *quest* by the end of the fourth episode (complete with a sunrise and stirring music). The desire to go to Antarctica *specifically* may not resonate with many, but the desire to go out and see the world, to escape--even temporarily--from one's everyday hometown life, to go, in the show's own words to *"somewhere that isn't here"*, is damn near universal. Near its halfway point, at the end of the fifth episode, is where it becomes clear that **Antarctica in this series is a metaphor for growing up** and more specifically, for seizing control of one's life, for shaking up one's routine. On the dawn of Kimari's departure, Megumi, Kimari's longtime childhood friend (and recurring second-stringer throughout the first half of the series), tearfully "breaks up" her friendship with Kimari and confesses that she's been spreading rumors and making Kimari's life difficult in a bid to sabotage her trip to frozen frontier. Both characters cry full-on ghibli tears as Megumi comes to the realization that she's been clinging to her friend, and using her as an emotional crutch. The soundtrack swells and Kimari rejects the "break up", forgiving her friend even as the both of them step into a world without each other for the first time since they were kids. It's the third episode in a row to deliver a knockout finale and easily places *Further* in the upper echelon of anime in its season all on its own. This extended metaphor continues throughout the series, and is evident in just *how much* of the show's runtime is devoted to the girls overcoming the minutiae and mundanities of making the trip to Antarctica. A trip that does not actually begin in earnest until over halfway through the series. This makes a lot of sense if you think about it, reaching your goals is often a hard and furthermore a *tedious* process, filled with pitfalls and any number of things great and small that could easily go wrong. *Further* succeeds by *not* skipping over this. The series' first third is dedicated to the girls simply securing the money and permission to go on the trip in the first place, and the second revolves around their overcoming obstacles on the actual trip--Hinata losing her passport in Singapore, the girls adjusting to life aboard the ship (and enduring a wicked bout of seasickness), and so on. Then there is episode 9. Shirase's character is probably the one whose initial motivation ties into this extended metaphor the least, at first at any rate. For most of the series everyone--including the audience--assumes that the main reason Shirase wants to go to Antarctica is the distant hope of finding her mother, who was part of a civilian expedition not unlike (and sharing many crewmembers with) the one she is on during the series' latter half, went missing during an inland expedition, and is presumed dead. This is *mostly* true, but there's another angle, Shirase's relationship with Gin Toudou, the expeditionary leader, Shirase's late mother's friend, and someone who has known Shirase herself since she was a child. It's established over the course of the series that the two have a *very* strained relationship, and during the climax of the 9th episode they talk. Shirase blames Toudou for her mother's apparent death and is evidently somewhat in denial about doing so, but more to the point, and tying back into the Antarctica-as-independence theme, Shirase feels that her life stalled after her mother's death (she later compares it, in episode 12, to a dream she feels like she never woke up from). The rhetoric is familiar; every day was the same. Antarctica, again, serves as a means of escape, an end to the endless everyday--the Slice of Life cycle of consequence-free repetition that many lighthearted anime embrace, but in the real world (and here), is a trap. Shirase pours her heart out, and we are met with the immediate visual metaphor of the expedition ship hitting fast ice,[ and having to ram through it](https://i.imgur.com/Oaa1oeQ.png) (as well as a brief history lesson about Japan's allotted routes to the frozen continent). The episode ends with our girls--all at once--stepping foot onto the Antarctic snow. A place further than the universe, finally within reach. So with all of this said, how does one assess *Further Than The Universe* in a broad sense? On the whole, and within the context of its medium? Well, here's the thing. When it premiered, *Further* got unfairly pegged with the non-description that is the "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" pseudo-genre, and while the term isn't *entirely* inaccurate here (certainly, the cast is all-female, and they are adorable true enough), it's not even close to the full picture. *Further* is an adventure series, and furthermore (har har) it is one defined in part by a thematic *opposition to* the slice of life series that make up the majority of what gets called "CGDCT". *Further* is, boiled down to its barest essentials, a story about coming of age, about becoming independent, and about breaking away from the societal cycles it is all too easy to get trapped in. Look, for instance, at how little of the show actually takes place in high school despite its main cast all being teenage girls (and how it's unambiguously portrayed as a place of trauma, and a place to escape, for Shirase and Hinata). The series is not entirely unique in this regard, as this kind of anti-Slice of Life genre dates back at least to *Sound of The Sky*, if not farther. But the key difference between *Further* and many of those earlier series is twofold. The first is that *Further* takes place in a setting much more akin to the real world (the events improbable but far from impossible) as opposed to a dystopia or similarly downbeat setting, and the second is related, that *Further* finds in that opposition, not something disheartening or depressing, but something *inspiring.* There is nothing antagonistic about *Further*'s relationship to "cozy" slice of life shows, it stands apart from them, and as a result of its ambitions, is something altogether different. There is of course more to the show--both in breadth and depth--in the end, it is probably impossible to touch on every single thing that *Yoromoi* does right. There is so much packed into its thirteen episodes that there is a real temptation to ramble until words lose their meaning about them. It is a story about growing up, independence, friendship, parents. Big ideas, broad things that a lesser anime would sweep aside entirely or carefully pick and choose from. Part of what makes *Further* so brilliant is how all of this fullness and richness takes not a single thing away from the main arc of the show--Shirase coming to Antarctica, the place where her mother died. An arc that finally reaches a sob-inducing conclusion at the end of the show's penultimate episode, where, in its biggest break from reality (but such a well-earned one), the girls, visiting the camp site where Shirase's mother disappeared near, find two things. One, a frost-encrusted picture of Shirase and her mother. The other, a miraculously still-functioning laptop. Shirase opens the computer, opens her mother's email, and sees messages--over a thousand of them, from Shirase herself to her mother's untouched in years inbox--pouring in. Here, Shirase and the other girls break down crying, and so, it's not unlikely, do you. The last episode is probably the one that hews closest to what the term "slice of life" usually conjures, but by that point, it's so well-earned, and so deserved, that it's just more emotional payoff. Even in its victory lap the show captures you, over and over. The scene at the end of the twelfth episode is probably what will set off the most waterworks but for me, the title card at the very end of the series is what sent me tearing up, *Further* absolutely does not ever lapse, even for a second. It is ultimately that very command of emotion, genuinely masterful in its execution, that makes *Further* so perfect. Its flaws--extant but minor--are so few and nitpicky as to not even be worth mentioning, when every single note of character and plot development is played this well, they simply don't matter. If all of us had friends like Shirase's, finding our own personal Antarctica would not be so hard, and it's telling that the *series itself* seems to wish us that exact thing. After all, at the very end of the last episode, we have this: img880(https://i.imgur.com/oAxucrp.png) The sort of touching farewell that assures you that yes, the people who made this genuinely did pour their whole hearts into it. Somewhat incredibly, *Further* is director Atsuko Ishizuka's first longform project that is not an adaptation. If this is a work of auteurship, then, we can only hope that the title of the final episode--" We'll Go On Another Journey Someday"--is something of a promise, of more of *this*--this whole thing--in anime. It's something well worth hoping for. img880(https://i.imgur.com/U5amm7m.png) ------ And if you liked this review, [why not check out some of my others here on Anilist?](https://anilist.co/user/planetJane/reviews)
# Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” __-Mark Twain__ A Place Further Than the Universe is a masterpiece of an anime. It’s one of the best anime of Winter 2018 because of all the fantastic story, visuals, and character development uncovered throughout the anime. Mari Tamaki (known throughout anime as Kimari) is a high school student. She one day finds her old diary that says, “Make the most of your youth.” Feeling saddened that she hasn’t traveled anywhere, she sets off to go to Tokyo, but was too nervous to go. While waiting for the train home, she sees a girl running that drops a small package. Kimari tries but fails to catch up to the girl who had already left. She opens the small package to see one million yen. The next day in school, she asks her childhood friend Megumi Takahashi to help find the girl. Kimari finds the girl in the bathroom crying. The girl is named Shirase Kobuchizawa, a girl who wants to go to Antarctica to see her mother. Kimari decides to join her and go on an adventure to Antarctica. Let's get something out of the way, this anime is a very unique one. Four high school girls going to Antarctica is something new/different from what we have now. Really, the only other anime related to this is Pingu in the City.img220(https://i.imgur.com/TfjyMIw.gif) If the story was different, it probably wouldn’t be as successful as it got. The story is also somewhat simple to digest. The animation looks realistic. Maybe too realistic. img220(https://i.imgur.com/2TvttOC.jpg) img220(https://i.imgur.com/MNWrPGJ.jpg) But in all seriousness, the character designs and backgrounds look very good. The animation during the opening and ending is related to the anime as it shows their journey going to Antarctica. After the opening, you see a photo on instagram related to the episode, which looks very cool. img220(https://i.imgur.com/CN5mizr.jpg) About everything in the anime is based on it’s real life counterpart. Things ranging from the city Tatebayashi, to the area known as Syowa station in antarctica, to Gunma an actual location in the Kanto region. The Japanese Antarctic expedition is also based on real life. There are two versions of the Japanese Antarctic Expedition, one of which is important to the anime, the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. It took place from 1968 to 1977 and took place in Syowa Station. Syowa Station (also known as Showa Station) is a permanent research station in Antarctica. My first impressions of the anime were positive and overall the first episode was executed well. The opening and ending songs are very cute and catchy. There isn’t an issue with the voice acting/music audio in the song thankfully. Lip-syncing is also very well done, which is surprising considering many other anime i’ve have struggled with this. The voice actors portray the characters well, from crying to being overly excited. The anime also contains around 8 songs, most of which I enjoyed. Kimari is a high school girl that is shy and nervous (as seen from the first episode), but becomes more open because of the people around her and the experiences she goes through throughout the anime. Although she is shy and reserved she does have one childhood friend (explained later in the review). At many points throughout the anime I found myself thinking she was too stubborn, ultimately however, I decided she was a well rounded main character. Shirase Kobuchizawa is another shy girl that wants to go to Antarctica. She is the daughter of Takako Kobuchizawa, an Antarctic observation crew member. Shirase is bullied by other people because of the outlandish dream/goal she has but in my opinion she's the best mc going along on the journey. She's my favorite main character mainly because she’s the one that started it all and is the reason why they’re all going on this journey. Hinata Miyake is the third important member in the journey. She dropped out of high school and works at a convenience store. At first I thought that she was bipolar (I still think it’s a possibility), as seen in the anime, but it could be that she’s just good at fake smiling, which always throws me off. One instance of her mood changing almost too quickly was when she left the building, Shirase follows her and notices that she is screaming and mad. When Hinata goes back inside, she is smiling. She is the least important main character however. The fourth and last main character is Yuzuki Shiraishi, a long running famous actress. She didn’t want to go to Antarctica at first, but convinced. She was different than the other main characters because she never had any real friends (real as in they didn’t care she was popular) so she didn’t know much about friendship. She was a very cool character in the anime. Someone else worth mentioning is Kimaris childhood friend Megumi Takahashi. Although not extremely important to the story she could technically be the antagonist. I didn’t like her because of her attitude towards Kimari’s adventure. All of these characters are good and do a good job hooking you into story. > >
This anime right here really hit home for me. It moved me and made me rethink the way I was living my life. People might consider _A Place Further Than the Universe_ to be a MOE or slice of life anime but it’s not. It is bigger than that. It is an emotional drama full of adventure and excitement. Mari Tamaki — or Kimari, as her friends call her — is a high school girl in her second year who feels like her life is lacking excitement and purpose. She wants to make the most of her youth and create significant memories that will stick with her for years to come. Her motive is understandable because, like any other teen in high school, we don’t want to just waste our precious youthful days doing meaningless stuff. When we’re older we want to look back at the good times we had and the adventures we went on. However, Kimari has something holding her back. Fear. Her main issue is that she is afraid of trying new things because she believes that things might not go right or that she will end up regretting her decision later on. I understood where she was coming from because I have had similar thoughts like these when it comes to doing new things. Enter Shirase Kobuchizawa. She is known at school as “Antarctica” due to her obsession with wanting to go there. Her mother, Takako Kobuchizawa was a scientist and explorer who went to missing on the Antarctica expedition 3 years prior to the start of the story. Shirase’s mission is to travel to Antarctica in hopes of finding her mother. Everyone thinks it is absurd because she is still a high schooler and is not qualified to travel there. Despite the various setbacks, it does not stop Shirase from continuing to move forward and strive for her goal. Kimari is inspired and moved into taking action by Shirase and decides to join her on her journey to Antarctica. She is tired of her uneventful life and is ready to move forward. Along the way, Kimari and Shirase meet Hinata Miyake — a lively girl who has finished high school early and has nothing but time on her hands — and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a celebrity girl who has had trouble making friends her entire life. They both join them on their journey as well. ~~~IMG-6538~~~ The story an interesting and emotional story, filled with excitement and charm. While the end goal is Antarctica, they don’t arrive there easily. They struggle to reach their destination. The problems that the girls and the rest of the expedition crew face are realistic. Every episode is filled with a sense of adventure and it makes you feel as if you’re on the journey with them. The beautiful visuals and soundtrack add to the story, making it even more endearing. The characters are great as well. The girls meet each other in the first 3 episodes, yet it seems as if they have been together for a long time. The chemistry between Kimari, Shirase, Hinata, and Yuzuki is great and feels authentic. They come off as actual high school girls. Each girl gets their own important story arc, developing them further and making them memorable characters which I loved. So many scenes stood out and impacted me. Some scenes had me near tears, and I did end up crying once which is rare for me. Similar to Kimari, I want to be adventurous and try new things. But as stated earlier, I have also had doubts and fear of experiencing new things. That and I’m also a procrastinating lazy piece of shit. This anime came at the right time for me. As a current senior in high school, I realized that I only have a few months left before my life changes completely. Soon I won’t have the spare time I have now. Soon I won’t be able to hang out with friends as I do now. Soon my youth will be over. Seeing the determination that Shirase has and Kimari taking initiative into making her dream come true encouraged me to take similar steps. _A Place Further Than the Universe_ is not only a story about Antarctica, but also a story about the journey, struggles, and bonds that the girls make on their way to their destination. It’s a story about youth and making the most of it. These things resonated with so many people including me. Antarctica is the conclusion and reaching the destination is like being freed from a cage you’ve been trapped in your entire life. I’m glad I found the anime when it first aired because I feel like watching it weekly is what made me enjoy it even more. This anime is one of my favorites of all time I definitely do believe it deserves the spot of anime of the year. I recommend this anime to everyone, as it might open you to experience new things. It will stick with me for years to come. _Update: Thursday April 1 2021 6:28 PM EST_ _Three years later and the anime still holds a special place in my heart. It truly is one of a kind. I'm so glad my feelings have not changed since then :)_ ~~~Screen_Shot_2018_03_27_at_3_53_14_PM~~~
(Discussed further in Episode 6 of the podcast I am in, Digitized Desperadoes. Here's a link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TtJpcsp7zY ) Before I watched A Place Further than the Universe, I assumed it was another wholesome and substanceless slice-of-life CGDCT anime, like Yuru Camp, in the same season. After it aired, it gained massive popularity on online communities like Reddit’s /r/anime and the MyAnimeList ratings/forums. During that time, I endured a barrage of posts of praise of this show. And so, delving into it, what did I think? Did the hype hold up? Was it worth it? Simply put, no. This show deserved next to none of the hype, and I am completely underwhelmed at every single aspect of it. Nothing stands out, at all. It’s an incredibly generic tale of people with a dream, attempting to achieve that dream, and succeeding. It takes no risks and it executes every single trope imaginable, all played straight with no subversion. All of the storytelling and concepts are laced with moe archetypes and pathos-filled scraps of narrative. To me, I would compare it to a “feel-good” movie, like those of the American Hallmark Channel. It hits every beat of plot structure, establishes conflicts, resolves them, and, boom- catharsis. It’s all so formulaic and predictable. Here’s an example- one might say the main character is raven-haired maiden Shirase, the daughter of a woman who explored and penned a novel on the Antarctic, before dying on an expedition. Her entire character is that she wants to go to Antarctica to resolve her lingering grief over her mother’s death. That’s… it. Her entire arc is based around her mother and, occasionally, one of the other members of the expedition. You learn no more about her life, nothing about her father, nothing about what her mother did beyond write a book and die in Antarctica. Her beginning, middle, and end is defined by her mother and no one else. The viewer does not see her become her own person, she does not make any noticeable growth out of her attachment. And I think that’s the failure of this story for me. The characters are patently uninteresting and filled to the brim with moe cliches. One character is a hyper-intelligent savant who dropped out of high school. Her flaw? She’s kind of clumsy, and oh no, she has issues with people being nice to her! How cute! That’ll sell those blu-rays. One character is a fairly popular idol-type girl who has no friends. Her character is that she doesn’t get how friendship works. And that’s all kinds of problematic- they clearly portray her loneliness as something like a disease, that can only be cured by lots of warm hugs and karaoke. They ignore the mental hangups involved with being a loner, they ignore how this could be construed as abuse from her mother who forced her into becoming a young actress. They romanticize her loneliness, turn it into something awkward and adorable rather than potentially crippling. I hesitate to do this, but look at Oregairu or WataMote. Those loners create intricate personal fantasies about why they’re a loner or how they do or do not deserve it. That, as someone with few friends growing up, is the realistic aspect. But no, don’t worry, that lonely girl will totally have perfect mental health if you just pat her head and tell her you’re her friend. No trust issues, no depression. It’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with the premise. It’s definitely fascinating to watch an actual Antarctic expedition- these kinds of things are fully out of the public eye, deemed uninteresting due to the complicated logistics required. The information provided in the anime seems realistic, for the most part, and I appreciate that some level of research went into it. The execution, however, is where it all fails. Loneliness and dreaming are both heavily romanticized in this anime. Shirase is problematic for yet another reason. Her dream is seen as strange among her peers, not surprising for the community-over-individual leanings of Asian society. But the story continues to build her up as someone we should all respect, learn from, and emulate, without even thinking. The show’s point of view protagonist is inspired by her, and decides to take a rash trip to Antarctica just because she thought it sounded kind of interesting, and she was bored. This is a harmful way of thinking, and I believe it’s a fantasy to the point of being absurd. Shirase is just as much misguided in her dream as the others are for following her. The idea of dreams as something that “can’t wait for you” is just hilarious. Dreams are an aspect that grow and evolve with our own mindsets and society. They are a culmination of our aspirations and our desires, the road to our ideal self, and hopefully, our ideal world. They’re abstract and incredibly hard to actually achieve, otherwise, they devolve into a glorified to-do list. You don’t need friends to accomplish your dreams. You don’t need absurd amounts of money. You don’t need a company of like-minded individuals. You don’t need to suffer. You don’t need to defeat your demons. It’s your dream. Make it on your own terms, on your own time, even if it takes you 100 years. That’s not to say the morals in this show are bad, by any stretch of the imagination. There are a few nice and hopeful quotes from certain emotional moments that I agreed with. Specifically, I like some of the musings on perspective, on how we are all living our lives and no one else’s, despite it all running simultaneously. That’s a very mature thing to think of, and it helps to remind oneself that we’re not the only person. It’s mentioned once, and that’s all you need. I don’t need to hear about grabbing your youth by the balls five hundred times in one anime. I don’t need any more flashbacks to your mom dying or you hesitating. Just keep it simple, and don’t relentlessly force your ideals into your viewer. If they get it, cool, if they don’t, that’s just how art works. One of my more serious and citable problems with the show is the sheer inconsistency of tone, or rather, that some of the scenes and settings do not work in the defined narrative. The narrative is a coming-of-age, inspirational tale of some high schoolers doing something very difficult in pursuit of joy, accomplishment, and release. So why is half of it dedicated to awful gags and… “cute girls doing cute things?” Sure, I can stand that your mom is very very dead for long enough, but I don’t want to see you stammer on camera for the millionth time or cry because you don’t get how human interaction works. Oh, don’t you want to see some adorable and #relatable anime girls say that durian is gross but eat it anyway? It reeks of moe culture and marketing. There are even a few scenes that try to push a moral, despite being nonsensical gag scenes that really have no bearing on the actual story! You know what, this story would’ve been a great one-off movie. Cut the stupid gags, cut the incessant flashbacks, cut the girls… “doing cute things.” Just keep the real story, keep the expedition stuff, and sure, keep the dead mom. It would make a decent feel-good inspirational story a la the Hallmark Channel. Maybe even cut some of the non-stop crying, screaming, and insert songs with sad piano backing because it makes you feel the emotions. No real comments on the animation. It’s nothing special. They ham up the facial expressions and body language, but that’s because… that’s the whole thing. It’s never distracting in a good or bad way. It’s just functional. The music is standard piano/wind instrument emotional fluff that you’d expect from a sad commercial or conflict in a rom-com. It’s bland, it’s disappointing, it’s full of senseless moeblobs with incredibly trope-filled and uninspired writing. I wouldn't call it terrible, but I definitely do not recommend this anime. 4/10.
It's when the vast imagination of your mind syncs in unison with the body and spirit that'll take you to your destination, and when you have that, you'll get the motivation needed to place your first step forward. Your first step forward towards A Place Further Than The Universe. Humans have always had that inherent drive to explore beyond our current limits. We hear these remarkable stories of the times we set our eyes on the most extreme places on Earth to the void of outer space, and after countless numbers of struggles and challenges, we reach those places. We reach them. And this time around, we're going to reach it again—a place located directly south on the polar continent we call Antarctica. In a sense, this show is a tribute to all of our greatest endeavors in exploration. Every step the story undertakes is one grand build-up to an expedition that's just as remarkable as those other stories we left behind; a story that wonderfully captures our ubiquitous desire to explore beyond the horizon, fostering fun and inspiration amidst the many obstacles along the way. The full realization of what an escapade can offer to you is what makes this show so breathtaking. It will give you an intimate perspective on a brilliant tale of adventure, friendship, and independence. It will provoke a strong sense of wanderlust inside you. There is an exciting journey ahead of us, and you bet it will convey to you just how beautiful that journey is.
img(https://i.imgur.com/Czl2Sfe.png)
Taking place during the youthful stages of life, the initial episodes first introduce us to four high school girls, all of whom differ in their motives, but are united under a sole purpose to reach the Frozen Continent. Soon, that unity will prove to be crucial on their long journey ahead. They realize that there are difficulties abound: doubters who make fun of them, rejected requests to go on the expedition, and other mishaps that challenge their success. But these are all part of the obstacles they've to overcome together in order to grow; the things that come with what they've chosen to embark on. To discover the potential within themselves. To find out what else lies outside of a tired lifestyle. To understand the warm closeness of a true friendship. In essence, this show isn't really about Antarctica. It's more about the life experiences one can gain from a potent adventure, and how they can grow up from there on. So, off they go on this coming-of-age voyage, with their youth in motion. And they did grow up along the way. These four goofballs, who are also lighthearted as they keep getting tangled up in all kinds of smile-inducing antics, grow up in such an authentic and fulfilling manner. They learn from the guidance of the adults in the expedition team, who have experienced just how harsh this expedition can be, and the reveal of their past—both for the girls and the adults—beautifully segues into their current self who continues to move forward. They experience many emotional hardships together, but stayed strong over the course of the journey as their friendship for each other deepens, all so they can finish what they've started and reach Antarctica—A Place Further Than The Universe. All so they can utter the words "Thanks for taking me" when they reach the end of this unforgettable adventure.
An adventure that's painted through the use of incredible visual directing. The story and characters would've been amazing in their own rights if they were just words alone, but the art gives off that invigorating energy that really gets us engaged with this journey. It seamlessly fuses between their fiction and our reality, as the prominent lighting illuminates their facial expressions and the stunning sceneries, and as the dynamic animation brings life into their world that will always go on. As if it's saying to these girls to keep running forward, so it can continue to highlight their progress towards the final frontier with its aesthetic beauty. Day after day, the sounds of their footsteps persist in a periodic tune; never fading out and always moving onwards. The noises of their travel, from the jolly amusements to the poignant emotions, are backed up wonderfully by a musical composition filled with larger-than-life qualities. It's the power that any spectacular music has in overwhelming our feelings; and the great voice-acting along with the swelling scores this show has, they also have the power to overwhelm our feelings, making it an adventure that's truly touching to experience. Yes, it truly is an adventure, and it's one that wholeheartedly embraces the juvenile rawness of our youth: the time between childhood and adulthood, the time when the world still feels unknown, and the time of growth through the experiencing of new things in life, like meeting those people who you can call your friends. Simply profound and captivating, this is the adventure we call A Place Further Than The Universe. Let's embark on it.
Não temos aqui uma típica comédia em slice of life ou um neo-clássico moe de "garotas fofas fazendo coisas fofas". Temos uma obra ambiciosa e que veio para entrar para a história dos animes. Parafraseando Geoff do canal Mother's Basement, trata-se de uma história sobre "garotas fofas fazendo coisas incríveis". As personagens principais são muitíssimo bem caracterizadas e bem desenvolvidas, sem exageros e forçações de barra, sem apelos extremos para ganhar sua simpatia e gerar empatia. A primeira, Shirase - e que motiva toda a trama -, após perder sua mãe de forma trágica mas nunca desistir dos sonhos que dividia com ela, decide que o impossível não existe e traça um plano para chegar à Antártida. A segunda, Mari, que se junta a ela de forma abrupta, sempre quis fazer algo grande, diferente, sair da mesmice e aproveitar sua juventude da melhor maneira (aquele velho conceito de seisshun dos japoneses, né?); por acaso ela recupera um pacote que continha todo o dinheiro juntado pela Shirase por milênios e ao devolver, decide que estarão no mesmo barco. Mari percebe que Shirase venceu o bullying sofrido na escola por anos, ao que sempre era ridicularizada quando dizia que iria para a Antártida, convencendo a si mesma de que era possível e trazendo o sonho à realidade. Para ajudá-la com isso, precisa também trabalhar - e em um emprego de meio período para colegiais, acaba conhecendo Hinata, que depois de um tempo também se junta ao time, mas por razões bem diferentes. Com tudo pronto, as meninas se projetam e tentam convencer as responsáveis pela viagem Japão-Austrália-Antártida a levarem-nas consigo. Mas, claro, nada é tão simples assim e elas são obviamente rechaçadas. Nesse momento, voltam a se ver como crianças, pequenas, frágeis, fracas e impotentes. "Não, nós não podemos ir à Antártida só porque queremos muito e juntamos um dinheiro. Não é assim. Nunca foi. E nós sempre soubemos" é o pensamento que as coloca para baixo... por pouco tempo! Entra em cena a queridíssima pop-star mirim Shiraishi, que por acaso (mas nem tanto) ganhara o direito de viajar nessa mesma expedição que o trio tentava invadir rumo ao extremo pólo Sul. Ela não quer de jeito maneira ir nesse passeio maluco, mas sua mãe e empresária não quer abrir mão da oportunidade. Ela confere às três garotas, então, a missão de convencê-la. Papo vai, papo vem, com muita intriga no meio, finalmente todas estão prontas para serem treinadas e participarem da expedição. Em um dado momento, quando estão no barco, elas se dão conta do que realmente está acontecendo: "SOMOS APENAS MENINAS COLEGIAIS E ESTAMOS INDO EM UMA EXPEDIÇÃO PARA A ANTÁRTIDA JUNTO COM TODOS OS MAIS RENOMADOS CIENTISTAS E PESQUISADORES DO NOSSO PAÍS!" e a mágica começa. A relação que desenvolvem ao longo dessa mágica jornada absurdamente e inegavelmente incrível é de chorar. Literalmente nos últimos episódios. E de chorar tanto a ponto de não conseguir prosseguir com a série até se recuperar do choque. Mas em momento algum choramos com elas por tristeza. Choramos por felicidade. Choramos por esperança. Choramos por ver um grupo de garotas que foram muito mais adultas que a esmagadora maioria da humanidade. Choramos por ver que quando acreditamos, queremos e planejamos, caso contemos com um pouquinho de sorte no enredo dos nossos destinos (risos), podemos ir a qualquer lugar, mesmo que seja O LUGAR MAIS LONGE DESSE UNIVERSO. É uma das obras mais incríveis que já li e uma das melhores adaptações que tive o prazer de ver na minha vida. Colocando no bolo livros, mangás, comics, séries de televisão, animes, filmes e músicas, A Place Further Than The Universe fica no meu Top 50 Artes Que Mais Me Marcaram - se é que eu tenho um - sem dúvida alguma.
~~~I've never gotten around writing a review for this show, but I've decided to explain why I love this show so much.~~~ ~~~img400(https://animemotivation.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/a-place-further-than-the-universe-wallpaper.jpg)~~~ ____ Story: 9/10 The story felt like a rollercoaster ride, taking you to highs and lows, spinning and swerving left and right. Every bit of its story brought out lots of true emotions. There was the light and the dark. The fun times and the sad times. But needless to say, I enjoyed the ride to its fullest. It moved in an agreeable pace and each part of it was necessary for the build up to the final moment of the entire season. There were no pointless fill-ins just to make up the time for each episode. ____ Characters: 9/10 All of the characters were well written with their own personalities, outlooks and appearances. Each of them played their own unique role, and helped to move the story along in their own distinctive ways. Each character had their own path to develop. It's interesting to watch them carry out their own conduct. I enjoy seeing them laugh together, cry together and learn together. ____ Animation/Art: 10/10 The animators did a splendid job bringing out the finishing touches to this anime. They've executed clean animation that helped every scene to flow nicely and worked out beautiful backgrounds that were such an eyeful. The characters were well drawn, with not a single detail missing. Every detail was expressed with the anime's art style. ____ Sound:10/10 The characters were voiced rather wonderfully. They each had their own distinct voice that matched their personalities excellently. Not to mention the music, with had great melody and pleasant tunes that I could listen to for ease of mind. The soundtracks also brought out a lot of emotions, whether it was motivation, excitement, delight or sadness, the music would be fitting for the situation. In particular, I enjoyed listening to the OST entitled "Mata ne", which means "see you later". There were so much heartfelt emotions, that the song brought tears to my eyes. Other than that, the sound effects are on the spot. They suit well to the played out action. ____

__Prolouge__ I don't know whether I should say that I'll be discussing spoilers because the show didn't even have a plot complex enough to accommodate spoilers. Before I started watching this show I thought it was a bit weird how the reviews for the show usually went like "_Ohhh_ ma gawd this show is like the most amazing show like _everrr_.... if you watch it it'll change your perception of life.... " , but the plot was so mediocre. I thought that the show must have had something going for it because many people were praising it. But after watching the show I can tell that this show is utterly disappointing and underwhelming at best. __Characters__ There are four main characters in the show Kimari, Hinata, Shirase and Yuzuki. Only Shirase's and Yuzuki's voice was bearable, the other two girls had voices that could shatter sky scrapers. In fact I would prefer to hear nails on chalkboard for hours if I could save myself from hearing Kimari and Hinata cringy crying for a second. Kimari and Hinata would be the most irritating characters I have seen in anime in a long time. Hinata has a 'tragic' backstory that would have happened to most people in high school. But instead of not being bothered by it like most of the people with reasonably thick skin, she was such a little snowflake that she left school and started home-schooling. Kimari has to be the most expendeble character in the series in terms of depth of plot and backstories. She is not interesting, she cries a lot, she shouts a lot, and she asks _'Nande?'_ while crying a lot. The only character that I actually like in this show is Megumi whom I like only because she made life hard for Kimari. Shirase is a pathetic character who's entire personality is centralizied on her mother. In other words, she is so uninteresting that the only thing that gives her any character depth in the show is another character that has been dead for years. Not one episode goes by without her saying something about her mother. One of the many frequent cringy tropes used in this show is all the main characters hugging each other and crying. Crying happens so frequently in the show that by episode 3 or four you become so nonchalant and irritable to the characters crying that you would wish that you could be the reason for them crying. __Plot__ If you have read the Anilist plot summary you could easily have a conversation about the show with someone who has actually watched the show. But seriously, the plot is so shallow that if I was asked about the anime after a couple of years all I would be able to say would be 'Antarctica'. __Epilouge__ When I was scrolling through the Anilist page for this anime I accidentally clicked on a spoiler tag which read tragedy. So I thought someone is going to die in this anime. As the show progressed I was so disappointed and angry in wasting my time that I was hoping that someone would die and prayed that it would be Kimari or Hinata. That's how utterly trash this show was.

__INTRODUCTION__ I'll begin by stating that I almost never watch the shows of "cute girls do cute things" genre. This is likely due to the fact that my octane-deprived brain yearns for action much in the same way League players yearn for happiness in their lives (low blow, but I never was the one to puff at the low-hanging fruit as if 'twas beneath me). My lack of disposition towards the genre taken into consideration, this show failed to convince me otherwise and I hope to explore these things thoroughly in this review. Thank you for taking your time to read it. __STORY__ I tend to dislike story summaries, I believe they're a lazy way to fill the word count, the only thing I'll tell you about the show's story is: 4 girls go to Antarctica, each rank with her own motivations, and their relationship blossoms over the course of the show's 13 episodes. This considered, you may come to wonder why this particular show was my first of choice to enter this sort of "moe/melodrama/slice of life/whateveryouwannacallitit'safreecountry" genre, and the answer is simple. While reading the show's premise, the motivation of our first protagonist, Kimari was something I related to deeply. The fear of wasting away your youth as life struts past you is something I resonate with on a spiritual level. In fact, frequently over the course of the show, I found myself relating with Kimari on other things and I'd say we're quite similar, though I am pretty sure she foregoes the act of taking solace within the inevitability of humanity's demise (I am not an edgelord irl, pinky promise). The story paces fairly decently, although it is prone to being bogged down here and there. But my main issue with the show is how every scene of importance and emotional gravitas is punctuated with tears. With how much were shed, you'd think they'd eventually just decide to freeze the damn things over and make their own Antarctica near Japan. It is merely a known fact, whether in story-telling or general aspects of life, that an overabundance of an element will make an individual numb to the said element. There's a very good emotional scene near the end, the impact of which is severely decayed by the 3.000 scenes of crying which paved the way for it. However, this may be the staple of the genre to which "A Place Further Than the Universe" adheres, and I will acknowledge that, with a caveat that shows needn't adhere to the archetypes of their genres absolutely. Another of show's flaws is how painfully predictable it is; there's a particular sub-arc which revolves around Kimari and her friend Megu, the details of which you'll be able to foresee from the outset, but I will say that this arc has an undeniable emotional weight while being punctuated by a wholesome twist at the end which is: ~!Megu going to Arctic in response to Kimari going to Antarctica!~ But the worst aspect of this predictable story is the conclusion of how Shirase Kobuchizawa's (one of the 4 main girls, arguably the one with the highest emotional investment in the story) arc ends. It was beyond predictable from the get-go that her arc will end wit her: ~!Finding a small remnant of her mother on Antarctica and that that was gonna be it!~ You don't even need my galaxy-sized brain to see this, it's just obvious. The ending was: ~!Extremely wholesome, but also predictable and anti-climactic. The fact that this show's artistic punchline was going to be an Aurora was beyond obvious, but it also made perfect sense. My favorite scene is when Kimari asks Shirase if they'll ever go back, and after taking note of Shirase's dismissive "yes" , she says "I am asking seriously!" to which Shirase responds with "And I am answering seriously!" which felt like a very realistic piece of dialogue and stuck out to me. !~ I will say that the two greatest strengths of this piece are its undeniable wholesomeness and the bonds our characters forge on the way. __CHARACTERS__ So let's tackle each of our 4 protagonists separately. I think all 4 of them were made with likability in the mind's forefront, so I will not be taking that into account as much as I will how relatable the characters are and how compelling they are. _Mari Tamaki_ Also called Kimari. By far my favorite character. Excellent design, relatable motivations and a bubbly personality to boot all serve to make her endearing to watch. The show takes focus off her in the final stretch, which is very understandable, seeing as her goal was the act of going to Antarctica, not doing any particular thing there. It made perfect sense to end her arc in this withdrawn manner and I am happy they made this decision. _Shirase Kobuchizawa_ So, I like the character herself, but there's something off about her visual design that I dislike, but can't quite put my finger on it. Her bond with Hinata seems to grow the most over the course of the show, and that scene on the Airplane ticket line where she says: "My goal is no longer to go to Antarctica, but to go to Antarctica __with you__" sent chills down my spine. Her goal in visiting the place is finding her mother or a remnant of her mother. Her mother also being the author of a book from which the anime derives its name. Overall, a solid character that would've been better served by a tweaked design. _Hinata Miyake_ The tomboyish genius whose purpose in visiting Antarctica is merely to do something fun before taking her college entrance exams next year. A stoic around whom the show's "coming of age" theme is woven around the tightest and one to whom many who dread looming pressures of adulthood will relate to. There's also a sense of randomness and chaos to her, as of all the girls, she decides to go to Antarctica mostly on a whim. _Yuzuki Shiraishi_ The rich, successful girl who never had any friends and was exploited by those she called friends. A tired old trope, ain't it? But all things considered, she isn't bad. Initially withdrawn and cynical, her arc is about coming out of her shell and meeting the world head on. Her goal in going is simply to strengthen the bond with the other 3 girls, come of it what may, and I like how her subdued manner is reflected in her way of speaking, as she is the only one who uses Keigo (essentially polite, formal Japanese) even in an informal setting, i.e surrounded by friends. Other side characters are fine, neither particularly enthralling, nor gravely offensive. They merely exist for the sake of it, and none aside from some of the ship's crew have any particular arcs to speak of. __ANIMATION AND AESTHETIC__ So, this being a non-action show which also doesn't even have a villain, let alone any Sakuga to speak of. Most of the visual budget was spent in highly detailed, nicely made backgrounds and fluid body movement. However, I do think if you wanted to see what some nice, non-action-oriented animation looks like, you'd be better off watching Kaguya-sama, as that one has ridiculous amounts of "hidden Sakuga". But I will stress that the backgrounds look extremely nice, sometimes almost as well as Ufotable's. ALMOST. Aesthetic, or art style is a different matter. To me, this show does nothing special with how it looks. It's not like JoJo or Yuasa's Devilman where it's immediately recognizable. It's just there, and honestly, kind of bland. The show ain't the greatest of visual treats, but neither is it the most hideous thing your eyes will be subjected to (a statement which gets Berserk 2017 sweating). __ OST AND SOUND DESIGN__ I liked the OST but my emotion towards it never went anywhere beyond the initial impression of "competent but could be better". There's one song with vocals which is glued to some of the show's emotional heavy-hitters which I liked but the OST as a whole isn't the thing you'll be listening to on a frequent basis. It compliments the show nicely and that's about the extent of how far it goes. The sound design follows in a similar vain of "competence but imperfection" which seems to be a staple of this show at this point. Then again, Antarctica as a setting doesn't leave much space for excellent sound design, your only options being "provide the sound of ice being scooped/shoveled and the ship doing ship things". So I'll give the sound crew that, at least. The voice acting is pretty solid, each girl sounds extremely distinct and has their own, expressive way of speaking. My personal favorite was Yuzuki's voice actress, Kimari's being in the close second. __CONCLUSION__ A Place Further Than the Universe could have been the show which knocked you off your feet, but instead chose to dawdle in the mediocrity of lesser shows by flawed pacing, predictable story beats and punctuating each emotional scene with crying. I'd still recommend as a way to pass the time with something wholesome, while following up that recommendation with a warning to temper your expectations, for such often yield the greatest spoils. Anyway, thank you for reading this review of mine! I hope you enjoyed it. Feel free to post a message on my profile telling me what you think. Agree/Disagree? Or merely have suggestions for how I could improve my writing? Do make sure to relay any of these to me!

_A spoiler-free review~_ ~~~══════⋆✧☆✧⋆══════~~~img(https://wallpapercave.com/wp/wp4593233.jpg)~~~══════⋆✧☆✧⋆══════~~~ There is freedom in going out of your way to do something you have not once pulled-off before, and a certain allurement in aiming for the impossible. A Place Further than the Universe, is an entrancingly narrated and exquisitely animated coming-of-age slice of life drama/adventure pertaining to endeavoring something extraordinary with your life…and moreover, journeying the far-flung continent— Antarctica. In essence, it’s a tale apropos of simply getting out there and exploring the scads of mesmerizing locations and mysteries that the world has to offer. To me, occasionally, it feels like the anime is emboldening its key demographic of otaku to relinquish loafing around in front of their computer, TV screens; and to instead just get out there, do something with themselves, and enjoy life to its fullest. Collectively, this anime has one of those rare singular plots that efficaciously manages to strike a balance between believable and extraordinary. The anime has a lot going for it. From the symphonious and catchy score, to the splendidly crafted frozen landscapes, each and every aspect of this show commingles to complement this poignant tale. One particular aspect that I love about the show is how adventurous it is. When it comes to travelling, I reckon that more than the destination itself, the very journey to that destination is what matters more. The overarching plot of reaching Antarctica works effectually to continuously engender fresh, new environments and circumstances for the characters of the show to deal with. It’s also meticulous and sublimely executed. ~~~══════⋆✧☆✧⋆══════~~~img(https://wallpapercave.com/wp/wp4593267.png)~~~══════⋆✧☆✧⋆══════~~~ The pre-eminent plus point of this anime is unequivocally the four main girls, their friendship, and the heart behind their trip. A Place Further than the Universe is a poem to the tender steps these girls undertake toward their friendship set on a continent that, in Shirase’s words, “strips everything bare.” What renders the friendship depicted in this anime so vivid and memorable is that these girls aren’t merely blank pages for the viewer to project personalities onto. All of them are remarkable; they’re full of life, vivacious and obstinate in their own ways. Every single one of their disputes feel relatable and tangible, and their diverse backgrounds leads to a congenial cast with quintessential chemistry. Dialogues are consistently brimming with personality, and their interactions can fluctuate from gut-wrenchingly emotional to hilariously adorable. This is one team in all probability that you won’t get tired of. The visuals of this show are both expressive and spectacular. The scenic wide-shots are utterly stunning, accomplishing the laudable task of portraying the pristine, untainted beauty of the Antarctic scenery— a gentle reminder of the beauty that’s out there. All things considered, A Place Further than the Universe delineates a story that’s as specific as it is universal. It’s a tale about heartbreak, about the necessity to connect, and about the yearning to achieve just a bit more in one’s life. Even beyond the amazing animation, the friendship at the core of the anime is one that feels genuine and relatable. It had me smiling and laughing just as often as it got me emotional. It felt like I was experiencing the journey and feeling their emotions with the four girls. At the end of the day, being a wanderlust, the anime made me want to stand up, face and explore everything that our world has to offer.

_“When you hit the point of no return, that’s the moment it truly becomes a journey. If you can still turn back, it’s not really a journey.” ~ Hinata Miyake_ __Overall Score : 10/10 Story: 9/10 Art : 8.5/10 Sound : 9/10 Character : 9/10 Enjoyment : 9.5/10__ GREAT. AWESOME. This is one of the best SOL I have watched. I am telling you all it’s a MUST WATCH. Sora Yori follows a high school student named Mari Tamaki who wants to make the most of her youth, but she is afraid to do it. One day she encounters a girl named Shirase Kobuchizawa who has been saving up, so she can travel to Antarctica to find her missing mother. Together with two other girls Hinata and Yuzuki, they join an expedition headed towards the Antarctic. The anime's story centers on the girls going to the South Pole, "a place further than the universe." They struggle and grow together as they cope with extreme conditions. At first look Sora Yori looks like your typical cute girl doing cute things type of show or it’s just high school girls going on a journey to Antarctica but it’s more than what meets the eye. As the show progresses you realize that the show is way more than that. The issues of the characters it shows are so realistic and very much relatable. Add to the fact the pacing of the show was brilliant throughout! It has great writing and great themes exploration. It is one hell of an amazing series. It’s great in every aspect. It shows and makes you feel all kinds of emotions. Idk if it’s a spoiler but it is sure to make you cry as well. It has great comedic, friendship, family, emotions and wholesome moments. Another thing that I love about the show is how adventurous it is. Seriously every time you watch an episode of this show you always feel like you're actually going on an adventure with the four main girls. Before you realize you get connected with the characters and feel like you’re on the trip with them feeling everything they are (which I wish I could do go on a trip to Antarctica). Yes it’s that good!! This entire anime was a joy to see. The OST is perfect! Animation was really great! Characters are all absolutely awesome! It gives you a complete and satisfactory feeling in only 13 episodes. So would you not just spare some time and watch this 13 eps of greatness!! __SOME OF MY FAV QUOTES FROM THE SHOW -__ (Most of them are said by Hinata hehe) _“Sometimes, people are just mean. Don’t fight mean with mean. Hold your head high.” ~ Hinata Miyake_ _“Never think the stars you see are all the stars there are.” ~ Hinata Miyake_ _“To act is not necessarily compassion. True compassion sometimes comes from inaction.” ~ HInata Miyake_ _“Just let people say what they want. Wanting to show them up fires me up even more.” ~ Shirase Kobuchizawa_

LET'S GO ON A TRIP TO ANTARCTICA! Please do not let this anime fly off your radar. It is a stunning story about how four girls with different wishes come together on a journey to the Antarctica while also being on a journey with themselves. I have absolutely no complaints. The art is refreshing and colorful, the girls are so endearing and unique, and I absolutely adore the plot. This anime is super easy to watch and keep up with. Honestly anybody could watch this and enjoy it. It's really easy to immerse oneself in it. I really enjoyed this anime because it was a captivating story of how each girl overcame their problem while maintaining a sweet story of friendship. I liked how each of the girls had a different backstory and personality, because it felt realistic seeing the way they interacted with each other. The characters were unique and blended well with each other. It low-key makes me a bit jealous and want a friend group like that too! Throughout their adventure, there were many twists and turns that showed the audience more about their ability to work together. I felt like their conversations were realistic because it showed the happy times, and it also showed the more serious conversations about grief and miscommunications (especially while they were in Fremantle, Australia). The character development makes me so proud of them and this trip certainly qualified as a rite-of-passage as the four girls transformed into strong and capable young women. It was a super cute and wholesome story. Hinata, the girl iconic for her quotes, was definitely my favorite character. The art is super colorful and bright (fitting, because Antarctica is super white and white reflects light hehe). I really enjoyed the art, especially the nature scenes like the penguins and the Aurora australis! It was really pretty. The art felt really immersive, as if I were also on the expedition to Antarctica. I also really enjoyed the use of social media "posts" in the anime; there were "instagram posts" at the beginning of each episode which felt like a cute little detail. I looked up the usernames and was surprised to find out they had actual instagram accounts [(@srs_kobuchizawa) ](https://www.instagram.com/p/BeWOOZvlcKJ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)!! Super cute. Music was fitting and emotional. I definitely cried a bit during this anime because the story was so impactful. Anyways, this anime made me cry because it was so sweet. Please watch it. Episodes 3, 4, 8, and 12 ESPECIALLY were my favorite. Overall, each episode was a delight to watch and this anime is a wonderful experience! I would recommend it to anybody looking for an adventure. I would also recommend it to anybody at all.

- I don’t know why I waited so long to watch this series, maybe I was just being stubborn because of how popular it was, maybe I was just being ignorant because of the genre this show is in, or maybe I was just being naive thinking that I wouldn’t love this show, but in all honesty, this was a Hidden Gem from Winter 2018 that I didn’t watch until today and now I understand why so many people liked it, because it is phenomenal. I relate so much to this show, and I honestly love it so much from the first episode to the last. Everything about this show just felt so real and relatable to me on a personal level since I too always want to travel around the world and see stuff that has never been seen by others. But more than that, watching these high school girls wanting to find purpose in their youth and make a difference, even just a little, was so fulfilling to watch.
img500(https://i.imgur.com/sEQlbor.jpg)
- At first, I thought this show was just going to be a bunch of cute girls in Antarctica playing, and though there would have been nothing wrong with that, this show is so much more and goes above and beyond that, with us spending the first few episodes watching them struggle to figure out a way to fulfill their dreams, and instead of just appearing in Antarctica, we watch them struggle, have dead ends, and have hardships along the way, which really made it all the more worth wild when they finally arrived there. This premise is so unique to me when you really consider where they went, Antarctica at least in my mind is the last place I would want to take a vacation in high school, but that is where they go. These four like-minded strangers who find happiness in each other’s company take a journey to a place further than the universe, a place that we know less about than actual stars, that is why Antarctica is so magical, and that’s what this show showcases. Honestly, I didn’t think I was going to like this show so much, but after binging the entire series, I can firmly say that this show is easily one of the most heartfelt stories about friendship that I have had the pleasure to have seen made by Studio Madhouse.
img500(https://media.giphy.com/media/yMzowkGMFJuKSyolGU/giphy.gif)
- Is this show perfect, no, but I can’t really point out any flaws That are major enough that I would need to highlight them here, and really the characters themselves are so amazing that they drown out any grips I might have with other aspects. Each one of these four teenage girls have a deeper layer to them than you might think at first, and they are given the time needed in this series to really showcase this deeper aspect to their personalities. Honestly, it is this cast of lovable characters that has convinced me to give this show a 90/100, because when I think about it, if given the chance I would rewatch this show with someone in a heartbeat. These four girls embarking on a journey was so entertaining to watch, that I genuinely can’t wait for another season with them going somewhere else in this wide-open world together. After this season I now have the desire to one day be able to visit Antarctica, and I honestly couldn’t have said that beforehand, so let’s all hope that there could be even more seasons of these lovable girls highlighting places I would have never considered going to before😄😄😄 P.S. I’m really going to miss this crazy group of girls😭😭😭😭

_(Slight spoilers ahead, but nothing major)_ Right of the bat, I'll say I didn't expect to enjoy this show as much as I did. Unexpectedly, some of the themes it explores have the potential to hit pretty hard, while the whole purpose of the show feels like it's showing you the beauty of adventure, to urge you to be brave in pursing more for your life. It's easy to think it'll be another "cute" anime, or a "slice of life" with different character archetypes, however upon watching it, there's something about the premise and first episode that hints at a much grander vision. _A Place Further Than the Universe_ presents the story of four girls who take it upon themselves to do something amazing with their youth by venturing to Antarctica. This anime feels alive with purpose, allowing you to relate to the huge adventure these girls go on. Each of the leads have a motivation for coming to Antarctica, and each have brokenness and trials that they work through during the series. There's emotional moments, comedic moments, cute moments - and due to the pacing and beat of the story, none of these drag on or get tedious. Every episode adds something interesting to the story or character dynamics, there's conflict and challenges that need to be overcome, and the last episodes (as a result) have a great payoff. I've never been so emotionally connected to a cast of characters, and yet not be able to remember their names by the end of the series. This could be a fault of the show, yet at the same time it surprises me that each character's personality was able to carry them through the show, and whenever any of the main cast were mentioned, I was still able to identify who they were talking about fairly easily; I was still able to tear up when these girls had their character moments. So in that regard, I believe it's a result of good storytelling that each character felt unique, consistent, and had depth. Even the music is utilized so well here, with the dramatic and emotional beats landing at perfect moments. The OP is grand and captivating, and I've had its beautiful ED stuck in my thoughts since starting the anime. It's not a matter of being something new and different, rather a case of taking the simple and perfecting it. And this applies to the whole anime rather than just the music. The tale of going on a grand adventure is not new to storytelling, but the journey present in _A Place Further Than the Universe_ is engaging and realistic. You empathize with the characters' progression, and each one stands on their own throughout the story; there's hardly any filler in what is a memorable and streamlined plot; the music finds a place in your heart while further enhancing the emotions of the series; and finally, you finish the story not only feeling like you went on a journey with the characters, but also that like them, you want to go on another one yourself.

A Place Further Than The Universe is a really heartfelt show with some beautiful artwork. It managed to tug my heartstrings and made me feel I was on a trip with these incredible four girls. __Plot__: The story is about a girl who is feeling aimless and happens to meet another girl who is determined to go to Antarctica for her personal reasons and the other two join them and off they go. This is a very barebones description and within this description is a deeply moving look at the relationships these girls form with each other, with other people on their team and even a look at their personal relationships . Kimari and her high school best friend's relationship even if not related to the main arc really made an impression as I could relate to the situation of friendship and its dynamics changing over time. The plot moves at a decent speed but a fair warning much of the anime does not take place in Antarctica. The earlier episodes sets up the characters and then we head to the prep for the journey and then the journey to Antarctica and then finally the expedition in Antarctica so while I was interested in the entire arc but if you are someone who is just waiting for them to head to Antarctica you might feel its slow. I will say I wasn't entirely sold on how these girls ended up going on this journey, they explain it but I just have a hard time believing guardians of high school girls would so easily let them go to such a dangerous place but anyway I could easily overlook that. __Characters__: We have four central characters Kimari, Shirase, Hinata and Yuzu, they were all given due importance but Kimari and Shirase are definitely more at the front than the other two. Kimari is the main character who begins and closes the show, her thoughts and emotions are what drive a lot of the essential moments while Shirase is essentially the show's backbone, her drive and motives are what the show rests upon. They are both likable characters, while Kimari shares similarities with other protagonists of this genre who some people find annoying she is not tone deaf emotionally and has her conviction which makes her likeable enough. Shirase is what defines the show so if you enjoy the show you will most likely like her character as well. Hinata and Yuzu are decent characters and great additions to the team who had their own relatable back stories to them as well. Hinata is the intelligent one while yuzu is the youngest who is experiencing making friends for the first time, I wasn't as engaged with these two, but still I feel all four are great to watch. Expedition Team Characters: Most of the expedition team characters were very surface level which is fine we mainly delve into the commander and her relationship with Shirase, I really liked this character. They are a couple more characters with some significance who are also likable enough. __OP and ED__: The opening and ending songs are beautiful, I never skipped them. __Animation__: The artwork was beautiful, at first I thought the people seemed out of place that they made beautiful backgrounds and placed this characters on top of it and that took some getting used to but in general it was a beautiful show to watch particularly the episodes set in Antarctica. __Final Overview__: Watch it if you are in the mood to watch a heartfelt show with no action and which makes you explore a place beyond our reach.

Once I finished this I felt like I was wasting my life don't watch this if your self-conscious it'll just give you more depression. But if your not a depressed self-conscious introvert then you'll probably enjoy this because the comedy wholesomeness and animation are great so yeah ignore what I said before (even though its true). Only minor spoilers ___ #~~~Plot 8.9~~~ The story is actually really good and original I haven't watched to many anime of high school girls trying to travel somewhere especially Antarctica. Nothing really bothered me about the plot it was a normal high school girl,Kimari, trying to live her youth to the fullest so she decides to go to Antarctica. She then finds Shirase a girl who only talks about Antarctica and about always wanting to go there so from that point the meet Hinata and Yuzuki and go to Antarctica together. I would like to add the anime is really funny so that was a pretty big bonus for me but does get dramatic at times. ~~~img(https://animatedadvocate.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/yorimoi-22.gif?w=364&h=202) ~~~ ___ #~~~Animation 9/10~~~ The animation was very good throughout the whole anime so they were capable of making some good scenery. The art style grew on me and I really how the girls looked pretty different and not only different eyes or hair. yea that's it really. ~~~img(https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/929306232370593122/9F3D0F445EA687D21EC6C96CD002CB54115F074B/) ~~~ ___ #~~~Characters 8.1/10~~~ The main two people that I realized got the most character development were Shirase who started caring about something other than Antarctica and Kimari who hesitated less and trusted her gut more. There relationship was really wholesome because most of the time they would care for each other more than they cared for there self (but it did get annoying how much they insisted). My personal favorite character was Hinata she was always positive and i liked her quotes for example “When you hit the point of no return, that’s the moment it truly becomes a journey. If you can still turn back, it’s not really a journey.” – Hinata Miyake. Also there interactions were really funny. ~~~img(https://i1.wp.com/insiliconjurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/finale.gif?resize=540%2C303&ssl=1) ~~~ ___ #~~~Music 8.5/10~~~ The OP and ED grew on me but I'd just usually skip to the good part since it was really catchy. The OST were also nice and played at the same time. Yea there's really not much to say it. ~~~img(https://64.media.tumblr.com/bc678272d47864596ea632e268b222a9/9f2a711da0dd735e-5d/s1280x1920/6528ea4ab63abdb97cdcb5e504001c316feeb9b6.gifv)~~~ ___ #~~~Overall 8.9/10~~~ The anime was pretty enjoyable and I got a lot of laughs while watching so I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a realistic but comedic slice of life then this is a must watch. ~~~img(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wy00nv1uCRM/WuYPeGTDyzI/AAAAAAAAI5E/0TEw5RrIg0od4X-E7RfMnMHARiGD-wyzwCLcBGAs/s1600/52f4c4b624a0d3fdfc5349574b5a548918a65f89_hq%255B1%255D.gif)~~~

This anime has the potential to change your life and I highly recommend watching it :D To start of what interested me was the title of this anime "A Place Further Than Universe". It is out of the ordinary yet very fascinating title. It is one of those anime that are and will remain close to my heart forever. This anime Inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and look forward to do something with my life. To me what matters the most is what I have gained from watching a show, sometimes it is amusing that how these fictional characters teach us more about life than real people around us and this show has those traits to impact you in one way or other. There was one dialogue in this anime which was "When I entered High School I had many plans on things I want to do but it have been almost 2 years and I haven't done any of them", very relatable dialogue I should say. Story (~9): This anime revolves around 4 girls who have their own problems in their lives and they are helping each other to solve them. Main plot of this anime is about girl "Kobuchizawa, Shirase" wanting to go to Antarctica as her mother was an adventurer who had gone to Antarctica as well and never came back. She wants to see the place her mother went to with her own eyes with the hope that her mother is still alive and meet her once again. Throughout the story as the characters were introduced girls got to know each other and they help each other in achieving ones' goals. Characters(8.5+): Main cast of this anime is very relatable as they represent what people usually go through during their highschool days. We all dream about something but the ones who achieve it are the one who have the guts to pull themselves out of their comfort zone. This anime did not fail to express character emotions and make them feel almost real. Throughout the show characters are depicted facing some real world issues like how other people around you try to pull you down when you are doing or in the way of doing something they don't have the skills or the guts to try out. They cry with each other, laugh with each other and enjoy their time to the fullest instead of worrying about things that haven't gone well. In the end the girls helped each other and things worked out for them :D Overall(8.8+) It is very enjoyable to watch and the visuals are colorful as well which makes it look 10 times better, all 13 eps are worth it. It was one of those anime that had an impact on me as a person and words aren't enough to describe my feelings toward this anime. I highly recommend this anime to people who feel like they are stuck in life and want to try something they have never done before.

~~~This will be a non spoiler review~~~ This was written on December 31st 2021. I wanted to finish one more anime before the year ends, so I went with "A Place Further Than The Universe". I usually don't do full reviews but this show deserves one. ___ First of all, I found it really hard to get into the first few episodes. It took me like an hour per episode cause it was slow and nothing really happened. But that all changed around the 4-5th, where the show really found its stride and started to pick up momentum. ~~~img300(https://i.imgur.com/eA1tm4m.jpg)~~~ Around this time was when we get to see more interactions between our main characters and actually start to care about them and this journey. The girls may often clash with one another, but that just shows their strengthening bond and growing relationships with each other as they take on the world together. ____ The first few episodes may have lowered my expectations a bit, but after episode 5, every episode following that would blow my mind on how they just keep on getting better and better. By episode 7, I was fully invested in their journey and found myself following their adventure as if it were my own. I would celebrate their achievements with them, and hell, even get emotional along with them when they faced personal challenges too. Few shows can get me to care THAT much about the main cast, but this one managed to do so in only a couple episodes. They are just that loveable. ~~~img300(https://i2.wp.com/www.blerdyotaku.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/5e19267784538763b1d1221fd795ca94.jpg?fit=640%2C447&ssl=1)~~~ ____ One of the biggest factors of APFTTU is how strongly motivating it is, something that I value very much. I would say even more than something like Gurren Lagann. Although it has a simple plot that may sound mundane if I just merely describe it to you, it's something you really have to experience for yourself to feel its magic. Our main character, Kimari, is motivated by a desire to live her youth to the fullest and travel to the reaches of the unknown, in this case Antarctica. I can relate to this a lot, since I also want to travel and explore the natural wonders of the world someday, so her motivation is also personal to me. I was so invested I actually started researching about Antarctica on my own time. ~~~img300(https://wallpaperaccess.com/full/4067565.jpg)~~~ _____ Episodes 12 & 13 are truly the climax of their journey and are guaranteed to take you on a feels trip. The ending is extremely satisfying and tied up everything. It definitely makes up for the show's slow start. Even though the saying "The best part of the journey was the friends we made along the way" can be kind of cliché, this show implements it in a way that doesn't feel corny at all. I believe this is the type of show that will leave anyone with a big smile or tears of joy in the end. Overall, I couldn't end off the year with a more fitting anime. The lessons and inspirations I took from it are something I can value for the new year, and the rest of the life. If you couldn't tell already, I can't recommend APFTTU enough. If you like emotional character driven adventures with a wholesome yet inspiring charm, this is for you. ~~~img400(https://theglorioblog.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/spg13title.jpg)~~~ ____ This anime taught me to just go out there and live life, because there's no time like the present! So go and laugh with your friends, celebrate your accomplishments and venture to places you've always wanted to go! Happy New Years everyone!
Is what I had THOUGHT this anime would be about. I need to preface this review by letting you know that I saw this airing in 2018 and made the conscious decision to NOT watch it, simply because I thought it was gonna be another mediocre moe-type show. Please, please, please do not make the same mistake I did. I personally don't enjoy moe as much as other genres, but this anime really speaks to people who feel like they're wasting their youth, and even if you don't relate to that, or enjoy the moe/slice of life genre, I promise you'll still enjoy this. Now, if my word alone doesn't convince you, I'll be going into the specifics of what makes this anime great. There will be very, very minimal spoilers, but nothing that would ruin your experience of the show. I'll start this review off with the pros, and follow it up with the cons. This anime focuses mainly on the topic of friendship, adventure and the work needed to make your dreams come true. It's about the parts of friendship that are hard to put into words. How we appreciate what friends do for us, how we miss them when they're gone, and how we look forward to them coming back. When we look at each of the 4 main characters, they all feel like 4 pieces of a puzzle, fitting tightly and perfectly with each other, but being incomplete without the rest.  Shirase's goal serves as an objective that we can follow along with. This is a notable problem in a lot of moe or slice of life anime, that being the lack of something to strive for. The anime lays it out crystal clear that these girls want to go to Antarctica, and will do just about anything to achieve their goals.  The animation and soundtrack are absolutely phenomenal. The insane shot compositions and environmental storytelling make this anime an audio-visual masterpiece. The director, Atsuko Ishizuka (director of Pet Girl of Sakura Hall and No Game No Life), truly has a knack for what she does. The subtle metaphor shown in the very beginning of episode 1 of Mari playing with a puddle of water surrounded by sand, and enjoying the way the water bursts open when the sand walls collapse is indicative of Mari's personality. The landscape and surroundings are incredibly immersive, and in a certain scene (no spoilers), the running animation is silky smooth, with buildings and rails rotating in contrast to each other to give off the impression that the entire world is moving when the characters run. 10/10 animation, no questions asked. Now, there's a reason it's not quite a 10/10, so I'll be going over a few cons. First off, we have CGI. They don't do a terrible job at it. In fact, I would argue it's pretty great CGI, but perfect CGI should be almost indistinguishable from the normal animation, and quite frankly, it's a bit noticeable. Secondly, we have slow pacing. Now, this is only a problem (a mild one, at that) for the start of the anime. The pacing isn't mind numbingly boring, but there are a couple instances where cutting to the chase would have been best. After the first couple of episodes though, it gets right on track. Third, we have repeat songs. The soundtracks are amazing, each and every one of them, and they use their insert music so unbelievably well. But there are only 5 songs with vocals, and 1 is used for the ED, so really, there's only 4 songs with vocals. They try to reuse them as best as they can, but no amount of masterful musical execution will perfectly mask the fact that songs get played over and over again.  And lastly, we have a predictable story. This isn't actually as big of a problem as it may seem. It's kinda par for the course when we're talking about moe/slice of life anime, but whether or not it's the norm. It simply has to be said that you can see a lot of the scenes coming. It typically doesn't take away from the emotional impact, nor does it really put a damper on the story, so it's not that big of a deal. These cons are pretty nit-picky and are pretty easy to turn a blind eye to. This is still EASILY, the best moe/slice of life anime I've seen to this day, and I'm not even really the biggest fan of the genre. In my opinion, they're pretty good, but never amazing. This anime is the exception. I urge you to give this a try, don't make the same mistake I did.  9.5/10
~~~__This review contains spoilers about the reviewed material. If you haven't watched it, beware.__ __Skip to the "Would I recommend this?" section for a spoiler-free reading.__~~~ ~~~This is the first review I've written, so it maybe bad, but we'll see.~~~ img100%(https://i.postimg.cc/P5jt7FMY/PINK-Line.gif) img100%(https://i.imgur.com/gjMCTYZ.png) ~~~__Some backstory__~~~ ~~~I like watching slice of life anime, most notably the laid-back ones with no drama in them or backstory of any kind (which clearly isnt the case for A Place Further Than The Universe). I watched the first episode of this anime around the end of January, this year. Didn't think much about it, and set it aside. Fast forward 2 months later and I picked it up again, it wasn't just better than I expected, it turned out to be one of my favorites.~~~ ~~~img100%(https://i.imgur.com/kC67PzJ.png)~~~ ~~~__The story itself__~~~ ~~~Now, most people reading this probably have already watched this anime (otherwise you'd just get spoiled), but I'll give you a refresh of the story We start off with Tamaki Mari, a second year high school student, determined to do something and not let her youth go to waste, she wants to go somewhere where she hasn't been... Of course she first goes to the beach. She makes the preparations to do so, skips school and.... Oh she's back at class. Looks like she just couldn't get herself to skip school.
img100%(https://i.imgur.com/aNkX9Md.png)
Fast forward a bit and we arrive at the point Tamaki Mari (or Kimari) meets a girl called Antarctica by the school, her actual name? Kobuchizawa Shirase. Shirase is a girl who unfortunately lost her mother (Kobuchizawa Takako) at a young age due to unfortunate circumstances in an Antarctic expedition, due to this Shirase has a resolve to go to Antarctica. Shirase often explains to people how and why she wants and will go to Antarctica, she often gets ridiculed, hence the nickname "Antarctica" by the school.
img100%(https://i.imgur.com/H8HCqQl.png)
But Kimari was different, she listened to Shirase and even wanted to come with her to the place further than the universe, Antarctica.
img100%(https://i.imgur.com/ym64z2g.png)
Eventually the rest were pulled in, Miyake Hinata, and Yuzuki Shirashi (who was instrumental to why they were even able to go to Antarctica) were pulled into the trip. Despite the odds, they manage to set out on a journey to Antarctica, the place further than the universe. And the rest is history ~~~ ~~~__Why I like and love this show__~~~ ~~~For why I love this show, it's kinda hard to explain. Lets start with the concept of wanting to go somewhere they've never been, wanting to do something they've never done, wanting to accomplish something without backing down, its a feeling I can relate to (and I'm sure others can as well).
img100%(https://i.imgur.com/lGkBgnR.png)
Setting out on something as big as an Antarctic expedition is ambitious, but this goes to show, with the right conditions and motivation (and friends on your side), no matter how big a goal can be, it will be possible. Even going to the place further than the universe.
img100%(https://i.imgur.com/xeF06Gl.png)
Another big thing this show was good in my eyes, is how friendship between the characters developed. I mean they just met and somehow they're already on a journey together. But, somewhere along the way, they all decided they were best friends, I mean. They never said "hey we're best friends now alright?". They just kinda developed through them spending time with each other. That may not seem much at most, but if you've watched the anime, you get what I mean. If you don't, that means you haven't watched it, which leads me to my next point.~~~
~~~__Would I recommend this?__~~~ ~~~ img100%(https://i.imgur.com/Sxj5nYI.png)
Certainly, it's a good slice-of life anime. It has a good combination of drama and comedy. The desire of accomplishing something you've never done before, the friendships the characters developed in the journey, the bonds and memories between them. It's something that you could see as weird and absurd at first, maybe even childish, but your perception will change if you just give this a try for a few episodes. Now for anyone reading this that have not watched this anime, I recommend this HIGHLY. I think it's an anime that everyone can love.~~~ ~~~__That concludes my first review on AniList. Hoped it wasn't too bad of a read considering this is my first time writing a review here, looking forward to make more of these.__~~~
The name of this anime has popped up multiple times in conversations I have had with other anime watchers. "You should watch that Antarctica anime, that one is pretty good". I don't think 'pretty good' is an accurate descriptor for what 'Sora yori mo Tooi Basho' aka 'A Place Further Than The Universe' is. I could describe the characters as 'colourful', 'fun', 'interesting' or even 'realistic'. That wouldn't do them justice, though. In the same vein, I wouldn't be able to find the right words to describe the art style, though 'amazing' gets close. The beautiful, easy elegance of how this simple story was told cannot be understated. You merely follow four high-school girls in their quest to join an expedition to Antarctica. But this show really isn't about the destination, but about the journey. You get to see the girls struggle with their personal lives, their circumstances, the different kinds of pressure each of them is under and how they each come to deal with their problems. All the while, their friendship grows deeper and deeper. *The Characters* Tamaki Mari aka Kimari is an energetic and cheerful girl who grew to hate that she never has done anything exciting. Each day for her is the same as the previous, and she never tries anything new, because she is terrified of the possibility that she might fail. Though a girl of many quirks, she is being shown to be very loyal to her friends and is generally sympathetic and friendly. Kobuchizawa Shirase might be the most emotional girl of the group, though she rarely shows it. Usually, she tries to hide behind a serious or cool expression, which quickly falls apart when her emotions get the better of her. For years, it has been her ambition to get to Antarctica, and she would do anything to make this dream into reality. Her immense dedication combined with some other fun personality traits make her a very engaging character to follow. Miyake Hinata never fails to wear a smile on her face, even in serious situations. She always stays positive, whatever the situation, though you can later see that there are more layers to her character than visible at first. Her expressiveness is always a joy to watch. Lastly, we have Shiraishi Yuzuki, maybe the most collected girl of the group. Her celebrity status has made it all but impossible for her to make friends previously, but the expedition to Antarctica gives her the chance to finally open up and learn the meaning of friendship. Yes, that phrase sounds cliché, what about it? The execution is anything but. To sum things up: This anime is amazing, especially if you are a fan of great animation, amazing characters and everything good in this world. 9/10
I like this anime, unfortunately it's not popular where I live, but it's quite popular in some cities where I live. I only regret that a good anime like this is not known where I live. Anyway, the anime gives me a strange indescribable feeling, it has a deep meaning that you can't feel when watching the rewind. To be honest, I rarely watch the same anime over and over again, but this series is really good, I've watched it over and over again dozens of times with my friends. It is giving me a lot of emotional frames. After watching it dozens of times, I suddenly realized "Why didn't I do crazy things with my friends before, skip school, stay up all night playing games, travel together, and now before I know it, everything is just... .. Memories, a piece of my life's img220(https://blognhanpham.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/review-sora-yori-mo-tooi-basho-2018-1.jpg) Sora yori mo Tooi Basho has shown the investment in the script when sketching out a one-of-a-kind journey with details from events, space to scientific elements. It is the crystallization of knowledge that cannot be summed up in a day or two. The anime takes place at a moderate pace, not too fast to make the viewer feel pressured, nor too slow to bore the viewer. The closely constructed details are deployed in a reasonable and natural way. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho didn't try to cram too much, following the girls through 13 episodes is always a humorous and relaxed atmosphere. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho is a strange story, an adventure that feels like travel. There are no sensational situations or breathtaking action sequences, but on the contrary, what viewers see are four ordinary schoolgirls, four people with four unrelated circumstances, bonded together. by a trip of a lifetime. Besides the content of Miracles, Madhouse also invested in Sora yori mo Tooi Basho with extremely high quality images. The graphics are very good, from the ice cubes in the water glass to the expedition's icebreaker are designed in detail. The background is great with views of Antarctic nature, majestic icebergs, white snowflakes that look like real life. Many scenes seem like natural wonders, which can be captured as background images. It is worth mentioning that in the animation part, although it is just a casual, adventure anime, this part is very elaborate with soft, flexible movements. The character design can make you a little uncomfortable because it looks quite silly, adding a personality that sometimes overreacts to look like a crazy character. But in general, the art is beautiful, the lines are clear, the expressions are natural, the movements are smooth and vivid, and it remains stable throughout the 13 episodes. In addition, the film scenes are carefully cared for, especially those about Antarctica, which always create an impressive sense of the majesty as well as the harshness of this place. The music of Sora yori mo Tooi Basho is also done very well, all 4 insert songs bring a feeling of clarity and optimism. The soundtrack is quite impressive with nearly 50 copies with all kinds of melodies such as light, happy, vibrant, suspenseful and deep, sad. And the anime has integrated very effectively into the scenes that have increased the emotions of the work. Funny music when the girls play, tease each other or sad, deep music inserted into the emotional scenes when Shirase remembers her mother... Besides, the voice acting part is extremely great because of the appearance of the famous female seiyuu. Through 13 episodes, Sora yori mo Tooi Basho has sketched an interesting and emotional journey. The whole work seems to contain such ambition that it trembles enough to make people want to swap themselves. img220(https://blognhanpham.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/review-sora-yori-mo-tooi-basho-2018-4.jpg)
I'm glad a friend of mine recommended this anime as I was really out of touch and sometimes not satisfied with the things I've watched maybe even if I do it might be for a short time and it wooshes into the air. Before starting, I would like to say that this anime will help out anyone who is still in high school or a workplace who is going through tough times and unfortunate events where you might be doting on yourself whether what you have achieved in your life till this point had been meaningful or not and sometimes the guilt people carry due to circumstances on how their highschool days or the workplace they are at is just not fit for you and you'd wish that your presence wouldn't mean anything to anyone and how it beautifully composes all the tough times an average high schooler goes through and people from the workplace on how characters struggle to prove to the world that anything can be achieved with teamwork and effort. __~~~Every episode teaches you the importance of life and how you will need to be the burning catalyst for others to do so. It's clear in this anime some characters had been out of touch with their close ones but the driving point here is how the characters atleast try forcing out of that prison of feeling and start breaking open to have a new life which is both liberated and emotional. With everyone around you watching them unknownly improve bit-by-bit along the painstakingly long process. In the end, even if it takes months or years you will definitely not look back regretting what you could or would've done. Whatever comes and goes in life may be a learning experience for some and for some it's not and it might be a heart-wrenching moment but always know that it's not the end and that there's always a chance for improvement.~~~__ ~~~img1920(https://files.catbox.moe/o5we1l.png)~~~ __~~~Be the change for someone who could rely on you, if things don't go your way try to adapt or ask for feedback from someone next to you, doing this slowly you'll be in for a world full of surprise and sorrow when you hear what the other person has gone through which you might've not expected it in the first place. Who knows, there'd be something which you could resolve. Yes, you! ~~~__ All I says is this anime will never fail to meet expectations if you want something calm and slow-paced give this a try I assume every episode will teach something you might've not known about and how the characters try to form bonds and relationships with others as episodes progress. Heck, even revisiting this anime after years will make you feel as if it's the first time you've watched a masterpiece unfold. It's that great words alone wouldn't describe how grateful I am for watching an anime like this and I felt genuinely emotional. This might be my first ever review so I apologise in advance for grammatical errors as English isn't my strong suit. But apart from that, I enjoyed every single episode from start to finish as it always had something new to look for and how each character is unique and comes from different backgrounds of their life but in the end, they've taken their time to make memories which will stick to them for seasons to come through. ~~~Edit: - Thanks to @Djditullio and @KronosBach for providing pointers on my review.~~~
After writing a K-ON review, I felt like doing one for Sora Yori as I think these anime have a lot in common. Though, writing a review one something else that K-ON is hard… Really hard… But I’ll try my best! I’ll avoid spoilers until the last part of the review (not counting the conclusion) , so if you haven’t watched the anime yet and don’t want to be spoiled, feel free to read until that point.
~STORY~
First, let’s talk about the overall story. I won’t do a summary of the show as I consider it a bit useless (if you want one, just read the one written on the anime page), so I’ll jump right into it.
img(https://i.imgur.com/VZliTqy.gif)
The first thing I’ll talk about is that, it may seem weird, but the actual point of the story is not Antarctica. It probably sounds strange due to the fact that the objective of the characters is to go there, but it is not the one of the story. The point of the narrative is trying new things, get the best out of life, believing in your dreams and the nature of friendship (not just some random “friends are important and they make you stronger” or power of friendship bs that you could see in Fairy Tail like anime, but more like what friends can do to help and support each other and how they can make one another grow). It is also about numerous aspects of life like taking risks, grief, finding your place in life and many more.
Though, the fact that the show isn’t about Antarctica, that still brings, for me, a downside. I really wish we could have seen more of them spending time there and goofing around like in the opening. I think a lot of people could easily feel that way as probably a handful of viewers thought that was the point of the story. But even aside from that, I personally just would have wanted to see more of them there. The show shouldn’t have made them arrive faster or anything like that, this would have made the real point of the story weaker and we would have missed a lot of good things, but I would have liked 2 or 3 more episodes (it's the only thing that keeps me from giving it 100).
img(https://i.imgur.com/uYgPlPk.gif)
Nonetheless, the trip in itself is also good, even with those aspects aside. It’s also really enjoyable due to the way we can relate to the characters and what they are experiencing. For example things that are pretty bad or annoying when you experience them, but end up being fun memories and such.
img(https://i.imgur.com/L8YMHhk.gif)
While writing this review, I read some from people that didn’t like the show to know why so I could write about those thoughts. What I found is that most found this anime generic and predictable. I think that they simply missed the point of the anime. Yes, what happened at the end was pretty obvious (I’ll talk about it in the spoiler part), but just like Antarctica isn't the point of the story, any kind of “plot twist” or event related to that aren’t either. It’s the type of story where the journey is more important that the goal. ~~And maybe in the end, the real Antarctica was the friends we made along the way?~~ It’s during the expedition that each character will grow, improve themselves and mature with the others and that is the point of the story (though if you haven’t watched the show yet, I would still advise you to not read the spoiler part, because the feeling towards the moment might still be affected).
Overall, I would say that this anime is not **just** a CGDCT. As [K-ON](https://anilist.co/anime/5680/BestAnimeEver) or [Hibike Euphonium](https://anilist.co/anime/20912), it uses the CGDCT to go further ~~than the universe~~ and to tell a deeper story. The sand structures that Tamaki used to build when she was a kid just to let the water run free afterward are not only a metaphor of Tamaki herself, that she was too scared of doing anything special that built on some frustration until she finally let herself run wild (which can also be seen in the chase during ep 02, but I’ll talk about it in more depth in the next section), those constructions also reflect the story which tells a tale of build ups that lead to a powerful strong release of emotions.
img(https://i.imgur.com/xWrIuMS.gif)
There’s also an aspect that the anime nailed, the execution. Having a great story doesn’t make everything, you also have to tell it correctly. MADHOUSE managed to nail this too. The timing and pacing are really on point. Just like the build up I was talking about earlier, the jokes themselves, may they be big or small will always make you laugh (or just smile for the smaller ones) but never make you sigh or your eyes roll and most importantly, will never feel forced or break the atmosphere of the scene.
~VISUALS~
Just like the “feel real” of the trip, the overall visuals are also going that way. I even heard that a lot of people from Singapore thought that the city sponsored ep 06 due to how much it felt real, though I didn’t find any source about that (aside from things that compare how close the real Singapore is). I think the best aspect about this (and probably why they tried so hard to give the anime some realistic vibes) is that thanks to that, we feel like we’re travelling with them.
img(https://i.imgur.com/EUJEZEY.gif)
The animation and art style are really pleasing. Though it’s a bit hard to elaborate as the art-style is completely subjective and while the animation is also pretty much the same (with still some kind of objective base), except saying that it’s good, there isn’t much to say. Another important part of the visuals is the way the backgrounds, the scenery and the shot composition are used in a meaningful way. For example, as I mentioned earlier, in the second episode while Kimari is running on the bridge and finally doing something. Aside from the happiness and excitement on her face, all of the backgrounds reflect the way she feels as they change and move to emphasise her feeling of freedom and accomplishment.
img(https://i.imgur.com/WEWeild.gif)
There are also always few details and more subtle elements in the background or the overall scenery that either exist to help to convey the feeling of the characters or sometimes just make little jokes that are kind of hidden or simply small and might easily get missed.
~CHARACTERS~
All of the main cast of the show shares one thing in common: their dissatisfaction with the current life they have.
Mari Tamaki img(https://i.imgur.com/RzkU8Xp.gif)
Kimari is an easy-going and kind of airhead girl who wants and needs to do something in her youth. She’s frustrated that she never did anything special and that when she has the opportunity to do so, she’s lacking in courage and will to follow her desire. It’s thanks to Shirase that she will have the push needed to finally do something special.
Shirase Kobuchizawai img(https://i.imgur.com/GJztTut.gif)
Her dissatisfaction comes from mainly two things. The fact that she wants to go to Antarctica to find her mother, and her loneliness due to the fact that she doesn’t open herself to others. One really good thing about her is that she could have been an easy “pity sadness” and her loneliness and rejection from the others could have forced upon the viewer to make them feel sorry for her. But instead she uses these things as fuel for her motivation and to grow even stronger.
Hinata Miyake img(https://i.imgur.com/i2Qh5Jp.gif)
The tomboyish and joyful girl of the group. Sadly, it’s a bit harder to talk about her motivation without going into some spoilers, so I’ll have a small spoiler part here. ~!She’s a high school dropout who needs to do something that separates her from her school life. During the trip, she will have to learn to trust and rely on other people after being backstabbed and kind of bullied in her high-school..!~
Yuzuki Shiraishi img(https://i.imgur.com/7zbvNka.gif)
And last (of the main cast) but not least, Yuzuki. She is a child star that didn’t get to know much about real friendship and the meaning behind it. So her main struggle will be dealing with people who actually care about her for who she is and not what she is.
Others
I don’t really think I will talk about other characters (such as Megumi and Gin) since most of what I could talk about would be more or less spoilers (and this review is pretty long already). But at the same time, they have their importance in the story so I struggle a lot about what I should do… Let’s say that mentioning them is enough ok?
~AUDIO~
In terms of audio, the anime is (once again) amazing. I love the songs, but with still a bit of a downside though, the lack of variety. Because aside from the OP, ED and 1 or 2 BGMs, there isn’t much I remember and the same songs are used a lot (especially the main theme). While I absolutely love those, it would have been better to have more (but I’m still happy with those).
img(https://i.imgur.com/n27RNg4.gif)
Regarding the VA, I will only talk about the Japanese one, because I never heard anything about the English dub at all. So, regarding the JP one, all I can say is that it's amazing and has some really big names such as [Kana Hanazawa](https://anilist.co/staff/95185/Kana-Hanazawa), [Inori Minase](https://anilist.co/staff/106297/Inori-Minase) and one of my personal favorite VA: [Saori Hayami](https://anilist.co/staff/95869/Saori-Hayami). But that was for the main cast. Supporting characters are not left behind with [Sayaka Oohara](https://anilist.co/staff/95092/Sayaka-Oohara), [Jun Fukushima](https://anilist.co/staff/105094/Jun-Fukushima) and my beloved [Youko Hikasa](https://anilist.co/staff/102263/Youko-Hikasa) to just name a few. Again, a point where I don’t know how to really elaborate further (but the backgrounds of the VA speaks for themselves).
~SPOILERS~
Ok, if you don’t want to know the end, you should skip this part and go straight to the conclusion (or leave the review… Or start it all over again, I don’t know! You can do whatever you want! I’m not your mom!) So… Of course the ending is pretty obvious. In what world would someone be able to survive this long alone in Antarctica? From the very start of the anime, it was clear that Shirase’s mother was dead. And it’s pretty evident that she didn’t get to read her emails… But God damn it the scene hits hard… That’s the execution I was talking about earlier. The sheer amount of emotion in this scene is unbelievable.
img(https://i.imgur.com/DxaUKAG.gif)
On a smaller note, I’d like to speak a bit about the scene where Hinata gets a call from her former teammates. I find this moment to be a really strong moment due to it giving more depth to Hinata and explaining more of her background. Hinata is the archetype of character that will always try to be positive and the less they are fine, the more they will smile to hide it. So seeing her burst out and be somewhat of her true self has a lot of impact not only on the moment, but also on what happens next and what came before.
~CONCLUSION~
In the end, this anime is the kind of anime that will (or at least should) affect you and makes you feel kind of empty once you finish it. It’s a strong story that aims to motivate people and give them the push to finally do what they really want to by telling a narrative that’s easy to pick up but pretty hard to put down. So if you like those types of wholesome shows that aren’t just cute for the sake of being cute, I definitely recommend you to watch it and if you’re not sure, I think you still should give it a try and it might honestly make you discover a new type of anime!
img(https://i.imgur.com/1CRbaQR.gif)
It really reminded me of K-ON, not only because it had similar characters (we can easily see Tamaki as Yui, Shirase as Mio, Hinata would be Ritsu and Yuzuki Mugi), but also the way the story makes the characters grow together and such, with a side note that I think it would be less easy to consider it “boring” by people who would miss the main point of the show.
This review will contain spoilers and might have grammar issues img2200(https://c.tenor.com/TJBt0G6PdScAAAAC/yorimoi-sora-yori.gif) A place further than the universe is an anime I held off and ignored for quite a long time, thinking it was just a typical moe show with a little bit of beauty, which didn't really appeal to me. But it ended up being one of my favs, and holds a special place in my heart. This was a show that had a lot an affect on me, with unexplainable feelings that I still can't find the right words for even after months since I finished it. __Introduction__ img2200(https://64.media.tumblr.com/e7a176e55b56f50d52ae0e39ea904ff8/tumblr_p6uanyBWBi1vla2ovo1_500.gifv) The show starts off pretty great, with one of our mcs _Mari Tamaki_, as she realized she hasn't done anything memorable, or rather a significant experience in her youth. So of course she decides to go somewhere, she packs her bags, buys a ticket for a train she's all ready she's pumped she's proud of herself for deciding it... but no. Instead she walks out of the station, nervous and unsure. Then she meets a girl _Shirase Kobuchizawa_ (best girl btw, probably.) img220(https://64.media.tumblr.com/148414b4c43ff8c85fbd4d85d7b40a09/tumblr_p3lcqhnxqK1wukmmyo1_r1_540.gifv) She has somewhat a goal as crazy as Mari has, a goal worth stepping up and working hard for, a goal that felt like it was.... further than the universe they were in. They meet up talking about their goals, Shirase wants to go Antarctica to see the location of her late mother. (correct me if i'm wrong about this part it's been a long time since i watched this :skull:). Meets two more girls for the rest of the show as well _Hinata Miyake_ and _Yuzuki Shiraishi_ img220(https://64.media.tumblr.com/90b6b6af341c238103e2a1695d47d6d1/tumblr_p2d8fpljBA1wd81ruo1_540.gifv) img220(https://64.media.tumblr.com/c4e6fc794316b86276271ffa45832a8a/tumblr_p5l18t2Axl1qehrvso1_540.gifv) __The main story__ They go to antarctica, that's it. __Why I love this show __ From my experience Yorimoi is inspirational, it got me thinking about my decisions in life that made me feel empty, and an experience I didn't expect to have in life. It wasn't just girls going to antarctica, but a journey that felt too real for me img220(https://moyatorium.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/sora-yori-12-12.png?w=663) img220(https://preview.redd.it/bs0bzl9oyi781.jpg?auto=webp&s=f824e829993a0f98f84b729335b83d9e342e11e3) img220(https://i0.wp.com/www.anime-evo.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/sora-yori-mo-tooi-basho.png) img220(https://moesucks.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/sora-yori-mo-tooi-basho-10011.jpg) img220(https://yurireviewsandmore.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/zz-14.jpg) img220(https://zubatsgrove.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/yorimoi-5-15.png?w=1000&h=563) img220(https://wallpapercave.com/wp/wp4593283.jpg) img220(https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNDBhNmZlN2MtOGYxOC00ZmEzLWJhNzgtM2JhMGQwMTM3NTBmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjc3OTE4Nzk@._V1_.jpg) img220(https://animatedadvocate.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/yorimoi19.png) I love the writing of this show, it's managed to capture these character's desires so damn well. They're all lovable, no trashy conflict for them and it never fails to have it's focus. Some of it's moments are one of the most heartfelt scenes I've seen in media and fiction, reminders of my own amazing experiences in life, reminders of my dreams and goals that I threw away when I got discouraged, or just thought that I didn't had the chance to do it. Everyone needs a companion in life, someone that cares for you and you care back. Quality time with my friends are some of my favs in life, even if I'm a silent guy or my friends and I are doing dumb shit, it doesn't matter to me since I feel comfortable whatever the situation as long as I'm with them. Some memories I hold dear that I've forgotten I wanted to remember and remembered again because of this show, I got more aware of my desires and goals in life as well. The show reflected an aspect I didn't know I had and knowing that I couldn't deny it hit me hard. __Overall thoughts/summary__ I laughed, cried and got all sorts of emotions watching this show, I wouldn't say this anime changed the entirety of my life, but it definitely has changed me and I hope and wish to have more memorable experiences in life. Honestly, this was much more about my thoughts on it rather than being an actual review lmao, but if you read this entire sentimental shitshow of mine I hope you enjoyed it. img2200(https://animatedadvocate.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/yorimoi-22.gif?w=669&h=372&zoom=2)
