This is just a minor spoiler warning, there’s nothing major but I do talk about the show and certain stories, consider yourself warned. Horror is notoriously hard to get right with anime, the medium itself is what does it, the style of anime makes horror hard because it all looks, for lack of a better word, goofy, hence why when anime does horror, it’s normally psychological horror (Think ‘The Promised Neverland’…………when it was good in S1), rather than physical horror. So in steps Junji Ito Maniac, a compilation of stories from well known mangaka Junji Ito (I know *shocker*) now I can’t comment on the manga as I haven’t read it, so I can’t comment on how good an adaption or how well it adopts his artstyle, which even I know is legendary when it comes to horror. There lies the show's greatest weakness in my humble opinion, whilst it’s nowhere near as bad as typical horror anime have it, it’s still not perfect, in some parts looks rushed and others looks lazy, the mouths for example don’t always match the words being said. Other parts look lazy, or well, lacking detail, like it doesn’t look horrible, just lacking details. However where this shines is with basically everything else, the use of light and dark is good, excellent even, in creating suspense, the sound design also helps this, it’s got me creeped out which is what I want from horror like this is really good stuff, this is creepy, horrifying and just all in all what I want from something that says **HORROR** this does it all so well, which is brilliant, I love the fact that it’s making me uncomfortable, I love the fact it’s creeping me out, if I watch horror that’s what I Want, so THANK YOU. One thing of note is there’s some that are decidedly less horror than others, the balloon story, FLIPPING TERRIFYING, like that was horrific, I was sitting here just like…….like……….like……….WORDS ARE HARD, it was so good and terrifying, however others are much less scary, the study one, with the room in a room in a room in a room in a room (I think I got that right xD) whilst annoying, and I’d absolutely hate life if I had to deal with someone like Soichi, it’s not scary perse, just annoying, it was honestly annoying to watch as well. The point of some being much scarier is a trouble the series has, the tone shifts are violent at times, from one story about a creepy tunnel, a classic in Japanese horror, to another about an ice cream van, the tunnel story, ‘The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel’ was horrific, most the way through, starting off on a light bead, it got horrific, to the ice cream story, ‘Ice Cream Bus’ which starts off in such a strange way, and it’s so much lighter than everything else, whilst it ended up pretty horrific, the start led to such a juxtaposition it just gave a shocking case of whiplash. Just swapping these two would’ve been much better with less whiplash, this I understand is an off product of having 20 stories to tell in only 12 episodes, but it’s something where it could be a bit better even by swapping orders and moving stuff around, there’s no real overarching story barring a couple mentions of something else in others. Something I’d like to note is the show’s use of colours, beyond light and dark, the entire show’s colour pallet is washed out, which is obviously by design, this in part is to alleviate regular anime’s trouble with making horror shows, as the colour pallet is a big reason why it struggles, but this, in my opinion also adds an extra layer of the horror factor, by keeping things dull it doesn’t give you a break in tone, then when it wants something to stand out it can brighten it up, and it really adds to the design of the show. I also really do love a washed out colour pallet, one of my favourite shows for art design is Mars Red which does a similar thing in keeping things dulled down, so do note this point could very well be a point of preference, but I do think here especially it adds to the show quite a bit. The sound in this is at points, almost too good for its own good, now I know that may sound odd, like how can something be too good, well this may just be a me thing once more, but in the story ‘Long Hair in the Attic’ there’s a section where the main girl in it, who sadly died (not overly surprising in a horror show tho, let’s be honest) was grinding her teeth, and well, this sound was honestly the absolute worst thing ever, it entered my spinal cords I stg, it was not a nice noise, which honestly, props to the sound people for pulling it off, as much as I hated it, it was brilliant, tho I still hated it xD whilst the balloon story was just the absolute most horrific, for just noise, that’s with the worst, like jeezus. I will add, this show doesn’t try to break the stereotype of anime just not being able to animate cars, the cares in this are absolutely woeful, they just are 3D things plopped in a 2D world they stick out like a sore thumb in every scene they’re in and don’t look any good at all honestly, I know cars aren’t the easiest thing to animate, but how do anime in 2023 still have trouble with this? CGI is something this show can’t do at all, which is sad because the general poor animation is something I can overlook, it’s something that doesn’t take me completely out of the show, but when the CGI comes on, it’s rough, it’s really rough, the problem being, unsurprisingly, 3D on a 2D background, I do have hope for CGI in anime in the future and I do honestly think it’s the next step for the medium, but it needs to be done properly, which it sadly isn’t here. To rank the stories we were told, best to worst, all in my opinion of course 1. Hanging Balloon (10) 2. Tomie . Photo (9) 3. Long Hair in the Attic (8) 4. The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel (8) 5. Soichi’s Beloved Pet (2) In Conclusion, the weaknesses are pretty big, I can’t lie, however it’s more than made up for it with its strengths, I would absolutely recommend this to any anime fan who likes horror, now would it be good to a Junji Ito megafan? That’s a different question and one I’m not in a position to answer, as a horror show this is very good, I just can’t comment on how good an adaption it is. It’s a solid horror show, I’ll quite happily give it an 7.5 out of 10.
I didn't watch the first series, and most of the stories were very new to me, so my first impression of this is that the ideas proposed to the horror genre were innovative at the least. There was a lot of dry humor in this series as well which was jarring at first since most experience I have with Junji Ito is from Uzumaki. Once I got used to it though, the Soichi stories really made me laugh, as did the balloon episode. Of course the main complaint for this series for me is a general lack of effort from the Maniac team. For most of this series it felt less like a Netflix original and more like a BET exclusive. There were a few exceptions though, for some reason. I mean, "The Bully" episode was bright and colorful as if everything was innocent and nice, but as soon as the girl started being a demon to the boy, it was genuinely puzzling, and I was hooked. It looked like someone colored it straight out of the manga, which is what this series was meant to be (since it's obvious that a fresh take on these ideas was not the main goal). The intro was also great to look at, but they made the questionable choice to make the intro a trap-themed, psychedelic joyride into the world of Junji Ito, despite having the word "Macabre" being the most descriptive word in the title. I'm guessing that there was some kind of communication issue between the creative directors and the actual animators of the episodes, almost to the point that I'm convinced that whoever made the intro may have never read a Junji Ito story in their lives. Moving to the outro now, it seems like it was made by a completely separate team that was equally tone-deaf. After every episode with an ending that may leave you questioning what kind of world could conceive something so grim, in comes a _Nujabes funk-jazz style song_ that completely upsets the tone that some of the darker episodes end on. ᴰᵉˢᵖᶦᵗᵉ ᶦᵗ ᵃˡˡ, I wouldn't even say that this series is necessarily bad, but it's clear that the source material carried this show because nobody would ever watch it for anything else. In general the animation was pretty chunky and the 3d models stood out in a bad way, but sometimes all you need is a good idea to get your own imagination going from the viewer's perspective. For example, "Ice Cream Bus" was a fascinating idea, not because I find the presence of uncomfortably attractive ice cream men calming/creepy, but because the divorced father wanted his son to enjoy his time with him due to a stressful split custody situation. After he finds something that his son enjoys, he quickly finds that getting him to stop will be tough THEN by the time he does something, it was too late; the son just... _died_. God damn. Where this series fails though isn't the lazy/ uninspired animation, but the stories lack any originality. The only reason why anyone would watch this is if they're too lazy to read the manga to get the better experience. The ice cream bus story could've been something _heart-wrenching_ if more factors had been introduced, such as the father wanting to make the kid like him more than the mom, or some foreshadowing situation, such as a neighbor's kid disappearing. I'm anxiously awaiting the Uzumaki anime (_practically salivating with anticipation_), but this did very little to ease my nerves. I've seen the live-action Uzumaki movie, I've now seen the Japanese Tales of the Macabre, and Uzumaki is the only thing giving me hope for a good Junji Ito adaptation. Why can't people do these amazing stories justice?

Souichi's stories are genuinely the only ones that get enhanced by this adaptation. A guy’s going crazy because he thinks there’s a dream version of him who’s trying to take over his body and it turns out he’s actually right. The story the Junji Ito Collection adapted was the second to last one where Oshikiri basically fought an evil version of himself who then morphed into a nightmarish monster version of himself. Intruder is the story before that story, and this Oshikiri’s hair is orange so I guess the assumption is this is a different Oshikiri from that Oshikiri because the whole gimmick of the Oshikiri stories is alternate universes but I’m more tempted to guess it’s because they just genuinely forgot what hair color they gave him last time? The orange hair looks worse. The much more important part though is that the entirety of Intruder’s horror is he looks at an evil version of himself outside dumping corpses outside of his house and he tells him to fuck off basically, but the evil Oshikiri just looks at him and laughs. img440(https://i.imgur.com/rZcTjq8.png) …Why wouldn’t you adapt this one first before the other one they did in the Collection? Or… maybe adapt *THE FIRST STORY FIRST?* The way the stories were originally arranged, the stuff with the alternate universes and weird shit increases. What the fuck was the point of jumbling the order? I SAW OSHIKIRI TURN INTO A HORRIBLE MONSTER *FIVE YEARS AGO.* THE BIG SHOCK ENDING THAT THERE ARE BAD EVIL OSHIKIRIS ISN’T A SHOCK IF YOU DO THE STORIES IN A FUCKED UP ORDER LIKE THIS ___ #The Long Hair in the Attic# The pain continues. img440(https://i.imgur.com/trhOpOW.png) The Long Hair in the Attic is another one of my utmost favorite Junji Ito stories. But this one didn’t fare as well as Hanging Balloons. Nope. The absolute best moment, the moment that makes the ENTIRE GODDAMNED story… they just fucked it up beyond repair. Junji Ito's horror collection is one of the best horror stories I have read. And that is coming from someone who despises horror. There are a couple of reasons I love his works. First is his art style. And that was what Netflix did. Unfortunately, the anticipating series proved to be much of a disappointment than a worthy experience. Firstly, let's talk about the adaptation. I respect the producers were trying to maintain the originality of Junji-san's art, but once colours are introduced, it no longer has that "horror" feel. It is quite disturbing and that is what the manga captured perfectly. What I believed would made it better is if the colours in the melted puddle weren't the colours of the ice-cream flavours, but rather the colour of flesh. Well... I think many of us would stop eating ice cream for quite a whiles... Another example of poor conversion would be, in my opinion, Souichi. That poor boy in the anime adaptation looks more like a pale person with blue eyeshadow rather than a person who is constantly trying to be creepy and scary. I won't sweat the details of whether the position of certain things is correct in comparison to the manga, but there is one particular story I know where the ending changed. He is being absorbed into the tunnel and the story seems to imply that he did not survive. Well, guess what? In the manga, he did survive. It gives a complete view of what happened to his sister and the research group, becoming one of the trapped spirits of the tunnel. But for reasons unknown, Netflix decided "eh, let's just kill the boy as well". And finally, the CGI. For the life of me, I can never fathom an anime company needing to resort to CGI. I am no expert, but I do know the difficulties of trying to make drawings on paper come to life in an anime. You only see this kind of animation when it is still under production. This gives rise to my deep respect to Studio Ghibli, who drew every single frame by hand, and also to stop-motion animation movies like Coraline.
