Some time after a space mission to Mars ends in destruction, strange monsters called "Ancients" begin

Surprisingly, whoever approved of Tenkuu Danzai Skelter+Heaven thought that it was a great idea, and decided to do it again with Mars of Destruction. And it was only released a mere seven months after Tenkuu Danzai Skelter+Heaven. And after doing some reading into how this was made, it seems both Skelter+Heaven and Mars of Destruction seem to overlap in how they came to be. The plot, what little there is, starts soon after a space shuttle returns from a mission to Mars in the far off year of 2010 ends up being destroyed in the Earth's atmosphere. Soon afterwards, strange monsters called "Ancients" began to appear around Tokyo. A group of specialists taught to fight the Ancients must stop them before they destroy the human race. And just like Skelter+Heaven, the plot in this is confusing if you don't know about or haven't played the visual novel. And unlike Skelter+Heaven, which seemed to be original animation, this OVA is a compilation of all the animated cutscenes from the game it's based on. The company behind the game, Idea Factory, thought that it was a good idea to take the games animated cutscenes and slap them onto a DVD. If this was an unlockable in the game, or was a DVD that came with the Special Edition of the game in a higher resolution so that fans could enjoy them, this wouldn't have had the infamous reception that it got. But having it's own DVD release? Why? As a promotional tool for the game, it isn't very good. The scenes aren't even edited together well, looking like a compilation that some random person would have put together in 2007 for their YouTube channel. And top top the whole thing off, the OVA has poorly rendered classical music put over it. I'm assuming that this was release as a cash grab for fans to eat up, but there could have been a better way, like the previously mention possiblity for a Special Edition of the game. Somehow, the animation is both better and worse than Tenkuu Danzai Skelter+Heaven. Better in that there are more frames of animation and the characters overall look better, but the perspective is complete trash. There was even one instance where a character turns around, but their perspective suddenly changes half way through. I would say that it's so poorly animated that you have to wonder how no one noticed how bad it looks, but I imagine the budget and constraints probably didn't allow for a second pass. Since this thing is a compilation of cutscenes, 95% of the plot is missing, so yet again I had to do some research into what the game was about. And just like Skelter+Heaven, this is an Evangelion rip-off, right down to the main character having a father that forced him into fighting giant monsters in a mech. I don't know how you rip-off Evangelion twice, because not only are you competing with something much better with Evangelion, but you're just competing with yourself, and whoever bought this because they liked the other game, they're going to noticed the similarities right off the bat. Everything else about the PS2 game just makes it seem like your standard visual novel. I don't speak or read Japanese, so I can't exactly attest to it's quality, but I imagine that it at least fleshed out the story more than in the OVA, even if the quality seems off. But from the plot description and the fact that this is an Evangelion rip-off, I think I know what to expect from the plot. Just like Tenkuu Danzai Skelter+Heaven, this one is just painful watch. It isn't even funny bad like a lot of other infamously awful anime. If it weren't for that that this was less than 20 minutes, I probably would have never even bothered. Avoid at all costs.
I didn't really know what I was bringing myself into but boy was I both suprised and shocked: however not in the way you'd expect. I knew instantly after watching this OVA that i absolutely needed to write a review to let everyone know about this masterpiece. Story 10/10 I. LOVE. IT. The story is extraordinarily excecuted I might even say to perfection. Every single act has been so meticulously crafted to pull at your heart strings when needed, so much so it feels like you're about to die. Like literally die. Everyone is memorable and leave a huge impact on both the audience and the plot. When that blue haired girl got blasted to the face and the green haired girl went 'oh no' I. FELT. THAT. They kept her alive after the main character (talk about that later) has a significant development and kills like 1 person and then dies to save her. However, after being brought to the hospital after their best efforts (off screen) the doctor stares in dismay at the girl with her fucking head blown off and says 'it's too late for her'. The irony that they saved the main character but couldn't save her really shakes you off your feet as you were previously thinking that there's no way she's going to be cut off so early in the show but think again, bucko. There are even moments more shocking like when that big bad guy told 'innocent' small boy that they are the true earthlings. The plot twisted harder than a fat man trying to take the cap off his seventh mt. dew bottle and on a completely and utterly inspirational - kinda makes you think about life uno? Needless to say, I was surprised that it wasn't one of Shinkai's works Characters 10/10 Like I said, the mecha suit guy is probably one of the most recognised characters and blue haired girl will always be my best girl but ngl my favourite was probably the big bad guy cause he wasn't even in the wrong. Mecha suit guy too much of a fucking pussy and green haired girl didn't do shit for her friends except call reinforcements when they were overwhelmed. The character development really struck a chord with me as I really relate to having to be forced to wear the special anti-ancient armor gear by my dad (we haven't been on good terms ever since) and it really gives me a kick to see other people making the best of the very same situation. The other reviews don't really care to talk pick up about this but i'm surprised they didn't highlight the art of the dialogue. In order to not spoil to much but my favourite's have got to be when the doctor said 'She ain't making this one' and the ship guy when they were burning up and he said 'we're burning up'. Artistic design and Animation 10/10 2005 this aired? Wow steins; gate must be based on a true story because they sure did send this gift from the future! Never seen more perfectly stitched frames and the character's idle actions sure do match with their on screen personas. Wait did you notice I said animation? Well if you are the same as me after spending hours watching countless reviews to fully unwrap the ending (which I am still struggling to decode the ambigious meaning/s ) you couldn't find the character's real names so you could find their adresses and send them fan mail :( well thats because (still in the third stage of disbelief) they were not actually real! It's completely computer sketched. Amazing right! Ah the wonders of the future. Each frame moves fluildy from one to next as if they were part of a continuum beyond the feeble physical realms of space and time. If you still cannot understand what I am hinting towards I shall say it clear: I'm lead to believe God himself has literally drawn every single frame. Sound 10/10 Not much to say about this one as I was too distracted by the plot but nevertheless smooth tranisitions between songs and sound effects were like the real thing. Beethoven really did a number on this. Enjoyment factor 10/10 Need something to watch with friends? Watch this Need a good horror to scare you at wits end? Watch this Netflix and chill isn't working too well? Watch this Taking a massive shit and you think you wont be out for 19 minutes 35 seconds? Watch this! Too many options to enjoy it and will always bring a smile to your face. Replayability really isn't a problem Summary It may be a motion picture, animation, japanese anime BUT I have NEVER seen something so perfect, so endearing than this short OVA. (Note before you read, I'm not bullshittin', this is actually my opinion and it may come as a suprise) I'll open this review by saying that I adore Mars of Destruction, it's a stupid, boring mess and plays on inspirations (mostly mecha series like mobile suit Gundam and evangelion) in a silly and hilarious way, it's both unironically and ironically hilarious and peronally my favourite anime parody. This anime has garnered so much hate because it's an easy target, it's parody taken to the extreme and in my opinion succeeds in being a parody, most of the fun is from it's absolute absurdity and stupidity and y'know what, I dig that. I can't fathom why people thought this anime is serious in the slightest bit, from it's obvious copycat nature of Eva's ideas to it's ridiculously shitty combat scenes, this CANNOT be taken seriously and is obviously a parody. It also parodies anime tropes that were prevalent since forever, such as it's parody on teenager love, shitty character archtypes and cutty, overdramatised battles, it takes these tropes and completely takes a big ol' dump on em, it is excellent bait material and has fooled almost everyone. So why do people hate it so much?, because they took it seriously... People got fooled by it's silly front and forgot parodies existed, and since it's a low budget shitty parody on purpose, there ain't much to appreciate other than the joke itself, and if you miss it there's nothing to enjoy.... Do I recommend Mars of Destruction? Yes, but you should watch some mecha anime beforehand to get most of it's jokes, or any anime in general since it parodies almost every major trope out there, and not only that, it manages to mask it in a way that actually convinces people it's a serious mecha anime. And for people who mindlessly shit on this anime, I implore you to re-watch it knowing it's a parody, it'll really bump up your experience and your appreciation for the creator's other works such as Tenkuu Danzato Skelter Heaven , which is also an excellent parody and a more direct one of the new entries to the Gundam franchise. For people who didn't watch this anime beforehand and saw everyone shitting on it, please give it a chance, it's really funny and a great parody of series we all love, you'll laugh your ass off no matter how you look at it because of it's horrible animation, dialogue, story and battles..... (By the way, I highly recommend watching this intoxicated in some fashion, it's incredibly funny...... either play a drinking game of some sorts or just drunk/high and watch this shit cuz it's incredible, same for Yoshiteru Satou's other works) Give more appreciation to anime parodies! they don't usually get much recognition or love, so watch some and give them some love, they remind us of the flaws and trends that exist in what we like to watch, and that's a special thing only a parody can achieve.
(This review contains no spoilers, but honestly, who cares) Imagine the following situation: you're in a building and a small fire breaks out. Clueless about the origin of the fire, you bravely grab the nearest fire extinguisher and try to put it out, only to find out that you've just made the problem worse. Welcome to Mars of Destruction, a 19-min long spectacle often hailed as the worst anime in existance, and best described as the likely result of trying to make an anime OVA with a $200 budget. To be honest, the title is accurate. After watching this, you'll want to go to Mars out of embarassment for sharing the same planet as the people who made this, and it does destroy everything worth anything in anime. The real reason Mars of Destruction is complete and total irredeemable garbage is that it consists of poorly cut-out, compressed scenes from the visual novel it is based on. See, in real life, if you compress matter to ridiculous degrees (right before it becomes a black hole), it becomes degenerate matter. In that sense, Mars of Destruction is degenerate anime. I just can not stress how pathetic and nonsensical Mars of Destruction is. The animation is so stiff you could mistake it for an attempt at running PS4 Cyberpunk 2077 in a piece of moldy cheese instead of a console. The fighting scenes are beyond laughable, and at times the camera randomly shakes violently for absolutely no reason. The soundtrack consists of a number of very out of place, copyright-free classical music, in .mid format (yes, yes, you read that right: .mid of all things). Mars of Destruction has no characters. I mean, there are people on the screen I guess, but to call them characters is generous. They all pretty much behave like 0 IQ blank slates. To be honest, most of the writing could've been done by an impressionable 12-year-old. Mars of Destruction makes some attempts at "exposition", but the writing is so bad and it tries to tell so much in so little time that it just ends up blurred as a small break from what this anime believes are action scenes. At the end of the day, it seems like 90% of the story is missing, and it just becomes one line of pointless bad dialogue after another, semi-randomly thrown out as if they made any sense. Mars of Destruction abruptly ends in a plot twist, which is positively the absolute worst plot twist I've seen in any media, period. And... that's it. Nothing is resolved. But, to be honest, it wasn't clear what was there to resolve in the first place, other than "hello alien invasion". As an adaptation of the game, Mars of Destruction is an epic fail. With how badly it presents its story, and just how plain stupid it makes it sound, it doesn't make me want to check out the original game (like maybe Steins;Gate did). It makes me want to avoid everything and anything that has anything to do with it. And, contrary to popular belief, I don't believe Mars of Destruction is a good ironic watch. Certain scenes (particularly the fighting) are indeed unintentional comedy gold, but they are better saved for a compilation video. Or just go watch an actual comedy instead. Just a suggestion, though! Honestly, what's the point of this. You probably clicked this review knowing which score I would give it. So, here's my equally predictable piece of advice: just treat Mars of Destruction as if it were a piece of radioactive polonium, and don't get anywhere close to it. Veredict: Mars of Destruction / 10. Look, I won't enter the debate of whether this is the worst anime out there or not, but regardless, this is really bad.

Well The first thing I would like to say about this is god damn is this a fitting review to start out with. Mars of Destruction is terrible. Like so terrible that the words I speak are not words of a pleased normal person. But the words and individual alphanumerical characters of a man who has wasted 20 minutes of the very precious life they will never be able to get back. After promising a friend I would review every anime I have ever seen I am starting with the 2 that will forever rot in the bottom abyss of hell where even Satan refuses to touch them. Animation: -40/100 This show shall be the only show in the entirety of my list that will get negative scores in anything. First on the absolute fucking misery that is Mars of destruction is the animation which looks like a 5th grader using amateur tools in the current year 2021 could use. Except you realize that this show was released 16 years ago by a "Professional studio". It is one thing to be an eyesore in terms of animation quality but another when your animation is so bad that looking at it for the 20 minute runtime that it makes you sick for the following 3 days not to mention that in 2005 this shit looked so bad that someone would believe you if you had said this came out in the 70s. Plot: ???/100 There really is no plot to be said here it's all just a chaotic mess of random bullshit topped by a scene that tried to play as if the "Characters"(we will discuss this later) that you should have been rooting for are the bad guys and they were the cause for the entire 20 minutes you wasted of your life which is an extra fuck you way of saying it. Characters:-20/100 The animation may have been abysmal but the "characters" you can't even differentiate from half the time. Also in a few scenes you can notice parts of their models just falling off their fucking body (IIRC but honestly I don't care to check). Even if they were at least decent in terms of anything that still wouldn't save this shithole of a show. Let's talk about something separate to the show itself that has recently come to my attention. The studio responsible for making this monstrosity Idea factory apologized for it's creation in 2017. Do you know how bad you had to have fucked up to have to apologize for the creation of something meant to entertain someone that ends up being this poorly received. This is 1 of 2 negative reviews I will post to enact my vengeance and many sleepless nights I've spent wondering what has this industry come to for things like this to be greenlit. 0/100 My soul has left all it's energy at the door.. Please take it Mars of Destruction as you are clearly in need of a makeover. There you go that's better enjoy resting in the black hole void you have created for yourself.
