Blend S

The story centers on a girl named Maika who gets a job at a cafe where all the waitresses are given certain attributes — such as "tsundere" or "little sister" — to embody while serving customers. The manager asks Maika to be the "Do S" (extreme sadist) waitress, so she will have to adopt a dominant and aggressive persona.

“Smile, Sweet, Sister, Sadistic, Surprise, Service.” What does the S stand for? Well it can stand for many things. But I believe the opening theme may speak for itself. Blend S stands to be my favourite Slice of Life series for Fall 2017. With its insane cast of characters and the traits each one must portray. You may think that these are your regular characters working at your regular cafe right? Well yes basically, but it comes with a twist. Each female worker at that cafe must portray a type of character. We have the Sadist, the Tsundere, the Imouto, the Bigger Sister, and the Idol. I will save you by saying this right now, the “Idol” character is actually a dude. You’re welcome, now you can put your boner back in your pants. Welp back on topic, the story is very simple of course being a sol series. Maika our MC finds a new job at a rather odd cafe which she was then introduced to the system of the cafe. She finds out her Sadist trait comes as natural, she tries to be cute but it has the opposite effect. She is the sadist of the cafe. Initially I thought of ways that this would work, then I forgot the possibilities of M customers. I guess they can take it as a treat. Turns out she’s pretty good at this type of thing. The big booby tsundere seems to be a great character as well, Kaho’s personality does relate to mine in some way ( Minus the tsundere ). And then the imouto. I’m not sure what Japan thinks when making this 4-5 feet tall girls at the age of like 16+, but I guess it works in some way or another. She plays the Little sister at work. I do like her type as well, for it would definitely appeal to some customers. The Older sister seems to be nice as well, I love her character design.
The idol well, well, well. I don’t have much to say about a dude. Seeing all these types of characters in one place and to see how it will play out is one of the reasons I love this show so much. It’s fun, and relaxing and pretty damn funny. The art and animation are amazing and I love how A-1 does slice of life so spectacularly well. If I can entrust any studio to make good Moe Slice of Life, it’s A-1 no questions asked. One of my favourite things about the series is the opening song. Admit it, it’s catchy as hell. From the beginning of the OP to the catchy chorus to the animation, everything in that OP yells out Moe and cuteness. I can’t tell you how many times I looped the first 7 seconds of the opening. I recommend this to anyone who’s looking forward to amazing characters and funny situations along with a catchy opening and amazing interactions between each employee. Sit back and gaze upon the cuteness that is Blend S.

~~~img500(https://i.imgur.com/WRaPSn4.jpg)~~~ ~~~Spoiler-free review~~~ There's not much to say about Blend-S that makes it unique compared to most other slice-of life anime, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's pretty obvious what you're getting into, and if you like slice of life shows with cute girls and solid comedy, this one's for you. The cast consists of a bunch of cute girls (and three guys) who all portray a character/personality type for their cafe, but the twist is that it's just that, a portrayal. Most of them lean towards having the opposite personality of the character type they portray for their cafe role. I'd say one of the biggest strengths of Blend-S compared to other shows in the same genre is that it's humor is very solid. I personally find that slice-of-life shows can get sluggish if there isn't any solid comedy thrown in to keep you engaged with the show. Blend-S does this well with the two main characters who have somewhat of a romance growing throughout the show. The "Manager" of the cafe is constantly saying or doing some hilariously stupid shit to impress the main female character, Maika. Regarding the romance between these two, it's pretty satisfying for a slice-of-life. While there isn't any major progression, even after the later episodes teasing the possibility of it, there's still some cute romantic scenes that makes you root for the success of the couple. As for the technical side of things, The show is on point with animation, visuals/design, and music. You've probably seen the opening already since it's a meme, and it's one of the best openings for sure. The song is catchy and the animation is super cute. I never skipped the opening once, but the ending was a different story. the ending didn't really stand out like the opening does, and the song is forgettable. The overall animation quality on the show was solid and I don't recall seeing any drops in quality. I personally find the art style to be very cute, and there are some good reaction image faces spread throughout the show. ~~~img500(https://i.imgur.com/X60igxv.png)~~~ In the end, I'd recommend the show to anyone who enjoys slice-of-life/comedy with a hint of romance type anime. I'd love a second season, especially with some more meaningful romance progression. Out of 10, I give Blend-S an 8.
# [~~~**I don't think I can spoil much but you still have been warned...
I suppose.**~~~]()
A show that I watched on a whim but was glad I did. [**PREMISE OF THE SHOW:**]() Blend S...it doesn't *really* have a story. It focuses on Maika, a young gal who stumbles upons a strange cafe. This cafe is filled... cute girls doing cute things. Each character works as a maid with their own trope (Tsundere, Sister, etc...). There is some moments of "Romance" in the show which diverts us from the usual Slice of Life we all love. Thats about it. ~~~img420(https://66.media.tumblr.com/044d37fc3d9dc3d6e01ade8f3a1deb38/tumblr_p1hwq1fysY1tvv82oo1_500.gif)~~~
[**CHARACTERS:**]() Blend S has many great characters, as is to be expected from Slice of Life shows (due to the fact that they don't really have stories xd). Each girl works as a maid in the cafe with a trope. >Maiko - Sadistic. Mafuyu - Younger Sister. Kaho - Tsundere. ~~Best Girl~~ Hideri - Idol. Miu - Older Sister. Each character, funnily enough, acts quite the opposite outside of their work hours. Maho, for example, is a cold blooded hunter who will kill anyone in their vicinity. This whole "Trope Maids" is the main selling point for Blend S, and as said before its the reason why Blend S manages to stand out so much from the rest of the genre. It is quite fun seeing all of the different Tropes in a singular room having to interact to real people, especially with Maiko due to the fact that she cannot be sadistic despite the fact that its her job. Most of the times Maiko is sadistic its a misunderstanding or accident which added to the fun factor when watching. ~~~img420(https://media1.tenor.com/images/42bc878d50cff2f432b73cc42cd30426/tenor.gif?itemid=10374541)~~~
[**ART/ANIMATION:**]() Blend S has decent animation and art-style. The animation is quite average but the art-style does look really nice and managed to capture my interest even more. This show likes to use a **LOT** of bright colours, it doesn't overdo them. It uses them just enough to make the show "pop" out more with vibrance. ~~~img420(https://media2.giphy.com/media/l1Lcl8SZmfeXUdSXC/source.gif)~~~
[**MUSIC:**]() **Smile, Sweet, Sister, Sadistic, Surprise, Service.** I belive **EVERYONE** on planet Earth has seen this OP, no matter if you watch Anime or not. This has been meme'd to hell. All of that aside it is quite a catchy OP with the animation and visuals being really good. Not gonna lie but I listen to the song sometimes due to the fact that it is so catchy. The ED is quite average if you ask me though, no where near as catchy and memorable as the OP. The OST present in Blend S is decent. More on the average side but the OP manages to make up for that. ~~~img420(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/ExcitableWickedHammerkop-size_restricted.gif)~~~
[**OVERALL OPINION:**]() Blend S seems like your average Slice of Life on the outside but manages to stand out and draw you in with its fun twist on the Tropes present in Anime/Manga community. I honestly did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did. ##### *(Side Note - Man writing stuff for SOL genre is quite tiring)*
`Smile.. Sweet.. Sister.. Sadistic.. Surprise.. Service..` ~~_`Snoop Dogg`_~~ ~~~img360(https://i.postimg.cc/hjc2P2ZS/blendS.gif)~~~ Its almost as if the opening sequence was made especially for memes. And it was through the legendary memes that I stumbled upon the surprisingly delightful anime that is Blend S. But before I begin my review of the anime, behold this [pinnacle](https://youtu.be/DJfg39WkMvE) of anime memes, which alone should be a compelling reason for you to give this anime a watch. Now this is the my very first public review of any anime, let alone on this site, so I thought of experimenting with the structure and writing style. So I came up with a __6 Ps__ system of structuring the review, and incidentally it couldn't suit any anime better than the one currently in question. Here goes the scheme: `Preview.. Premise.. Plot.. People.. Perception.. Peroration..` I hope you read it in Stile style (bad pun, but points for Blend S reference?). Anyways, the preview part ends here. --- ## Premise Blend S has a very simple and unique premise that you only find in anime - a teenage girl looking to be independent and move abroad for education finds herself in unfortunate yet amusing situations because of a natural quirk possesed by her - whenever she tries to make an amicable expression, it comes out as a malicious glare. ~~~img360(https://i.postimg.cc/TYw8jJj7/Screenshot-64.png) _A friendly Maika petting a stray Neko_~~~ --- ## Plot Maika Sakuranomiya is a 16 year-old, hardworking girl from a conservative Japanese household, who has a fascination for foreign culture and dreams of moving to another country for higher education. And she wishes to do it on her own, without any support from her family in order to be truly independent. But her ambitions are curtailed by her genes - somehow her cuteness is engulfed by a disdainful, nightmarish grin whenever she tries to smile. As a result, she cannot land a job anywhere, and is concerned about her future, until _Cafe Stile_ comes to her rescue. After another rejection, Maika stumbles upon a cafe (whose manager is instantly captivated by her charm) which turns out be the magical fit for her quirk. At Cafe Stile, each of the waitresses play a character - from a temperamental tsundere to a cute _imouto_, they have them all, each suiting their customers' fetishes. Blend S is about the daily adventures of Maika and her colleagues at her new workplace, and though nothing extraordinary it is oddly relaxing and lovable. --- ## People The characters of this series are undoubtedly its focal point. Because the whole point of Cafe Stile is to play a character, all the tropes become acceptable. Naturally, the traits of the role they play are subtly ingrained in their real selves, and this is very clearly seen in the case of Kaho Hinata, who plays the _tsundere_ character. Maika, for her terrifying glare, plays the sadist character, and its amusing to see how her apparent sadism results from her innocence. Mafuyu Hoshikawa is another character who is plays the _imouto_ role due to her short height, but has a completely opposite, mature and strict personality in real life. Dino, the manager and kitchen staff is smitten by Maika and keeps pursuing her (and horribly failing) throughout the 12 episodes, creating some hilarious moments along the way. Other supporting characters Kouyou Akizuki (kitchen staff who has feelings for Kaho), Miu Amano (a perverted doujin artist who plays _one-san_ at Stile) and Hideri Kanzaki (trapp who plays the young idol) all contribute to the comedy element of the show, and while not particularly outstanding, are definitely memorable. Even Maika's brother and sister who make guest appearances in a couple of episodes stick in the mind for their innocent sadism. All-in-all, the characters are lively and lovable, and the biggest strength of the show. --- ## Perception When I picked up Blend S, I had zero expectations from it. I had made up my mind that it was going to be yet another cliched slice of life rom-com anime with paper thin plot and cute-looking but uninteresting characters. And indeed, Blend S is just another slice of life rom-com out there, and you are certain to find a show much better suited to your tastes. I found the characters endearing and thoroughly enjoyed their chucklesome antics, but to someone else, they might be plain boring or even annoying. There is practically no character development to speak of (neither does the show intend too have any), and things remain the exact same as they did on episode 1, only with a few more characters. But despite all of this, I didn't feel like giving up on the show at any point. Clearly, Blend S is a show that is to be watched with your brain on power-saving mode and just to giggle at the mess created by the characters. And who knows, maybe that's exactly what you need to unwind after a long, gruelling year. --- ## Peroration To conclude, Blend S is an average yet enjoyable pick, with priceless and adorable characters and can provide a refreshing change of pace and genre to many. Thanks for reading! ~~~img360(https://i.postimg.cc/DwFfrNF8/Screenshot-65.png)~~~ PS - I'm trying to improve my writing as well as observation and reflection skills with these reviews. Any inputs/feedbacks/criticisms are welcome.
# ~~~TL;DR~~~ It's a slice-of-life but all the jokes are just repeated over and over again. On top of that, the main cast is nothing special and the two protagonists are weird and just the low-light of the cast. There is romance, but it's mediocre at best and honestly just gross sometimes: Tenchō is supposed to be 26 and he is constantly trying to hit on the 16-year-old Sakuranomiya Maika. Ew. At least the show is self-aware about it: img(https://files.catbox.moe/c1nqec.png) --- # ~~~Full Review~~~ The show's premise of a bunch of characters working as actors/servants in a café is pretty good, but the execution is terrible. It gets old really fast, and they do a horrible job at changing things up so that it doesn't become stale. If they hadn't introduced new characters from time to time, I would have dropped it for sure. A lot of the action is unrealistic to the point of being annoying, and it was hard to make sense of it half the time. For example: ~!Around once per episode, Tenchō does something of which he thinks it upset Sakuranomiya Maika, but it actually didn't. Then he apologizes, making her feel bad and she apologizes. This just spins in circles a bit until another character breaks them up.!~ And this sort of thing makes up a majority of the conflict in the show, it's honestly pretty sad how repetitive it is. ## Story — 3/10 I understand that this is supposed to be a slice-of-life anime, where story is not at all the focus, but the way they handled this is just bad in my opinion. Many slice-of-life shows (including some of my favorite shows ever) don't have a story at all, but this anime does it worse. They tried to make a slice-of-life, but they wanted to jam in a story, and the first best thing that came to mind was apparently a cringy romance story that goes nowhere. That on its own wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the fact that 80% of the shows jokes, actions, and conflicts happen solely because of this ‘romance’ between Tenchō and Sakuranomiya Maika. The show wound be nothing if it weren't for these two characters. ~!Later on, a little bit of romance develops between Kōyō Akizuki and Hinata Kaho, and I would have loved to see that lead somewhere, but they eventually just killed it off or forgot about it.!~ I think introducing the characters one by one is a smart decision, but it doesn't help much, especially when they introduce the dog that they then forget about for the next two episodes and that has absolutely no purpose whatsoever other than being a cheap plot-device. The last episode is above average until they slap the most unsatisfying ending on it that they possibly could have, and – of course – a fanservice-Onsen-scene. ## Characters — 6/10 The main cast is diverse and fun, the personalities play nicely with the characters' acts in the café, and their amount is well-chosen. However, the two protagonists (Sakuranomiya Maika and Tenchō) couldn't be more generic in my opinion. Their introduction is cliché and unrealistic too, and their age-gap of ten years is just too much for me. Hoshikawa Mafuyu is pretty okay all things considered, maybe a little one-sided, but I think it's fine. Hinata Kaho is annoying at first but sees some serious development later on in the show, making her a good character overall. Amano Miu is a one-trick pony but still kind of fun. Same goes for Akizuki Kōyō: one-trick pony, but kind of fun. He also sees some development later on, which is nice. Kanzaki Hideri is best girl. Period. But jokes aside, Kanzaki Hideri is unironically not a terrible character and it's a shame that they introduce her so late into the show. ~!Yes, Kanzaki Hideri is technically a boy, but I didn't want to spoil that, which is why I called them ‘her’.!~ I feel like if the show revolved around Hinata Kaho and Akizuki Kōyō, it would be a lot more interesting and less repetitive than it turned out to be. ## World — 5/10 It's small, as usual for a slice-of-life, but the café is nice and everything feels immersive. The homes of all the characters look convincing and nice. Overall average, but not terrible at all. ## Visuals — 6/10 There are some nice effects here and there that really enhance some of the scenes, but it's nothing flashy. The OP spoils the characters that later get introduced, but the ED doesn't, which is kind of weird. My main problem with the visuals is simply that Sakuranomiya Maika is supposed to have this terrifying look on her face, when there is literally no sight of that (or I'm just blind). Akizuki Kōyō looks much more frightening and yet that is never mentioned. ## Audio — 4/10 The sound design is pretty decent, but both the OP and ED are musical trash, if you ask me. The OP was meme'd to death, and that is all that it's good for; it's not fun, it's not natural, it feels corporate and half-hearted. Same thing goes for the ED, except that is also boring as all hell. They even messed up the mixing on the ED. ## Comedy — 6/10 There were some funny moments sprinkled throughout the show, but that gets undermined by the fact that nearly every joke gets repeated at some point, making it frustrating and boring. I like the awkwardness between some of the characters, except between Tenchō and Sakuranomiya Maika, which was just dry repetition of a kindergarten romance. ## Rewatchability — 1/10 Really, it's just not worth watching a second time, unless you like the comedy aspect of it. --- Note that I did not grade on sadness (as I usually do), because the show just wasn't ever trying to be sad, and it would have just dragged down the score. --- # ~~~Conclusion~~~ Average of all scores: 4.4/10 Average without rewatchability: 5/10 My score: 4/10 It's a very average show with a premise that could have been cool but wasn't. On top of that, the protagonists are unlikable and the conflicts are stiff and dry in most places. I was expecting more.
This is one of those anime that is difficult to talk about, not because there's a lot to take in but rather lack thereof. There's not really much to say because the anime just serves you with a slice of life with a side of "cute girls doing cute things"... Sorry, the joke was just there... Either way, let's begin with the plot, shall we? So Maika is looking for a job and eventually comes across Dino, the manager of Café Stile. And in Café Stile, the gimmick is that the workers of the café show different personality traits, so Maika would be the sadist, Kaho would be the tsundere, Mafuyu imouto, etc. This gimmick is actually pretty neat and makes for some good interactions with customers if you ask me, or well, the few odd interactions we get anyway. Since this is a slice of life at heart, you wouldn't expect this to have a consistent plot since the story isn't necessarily the focus, but here they try to have a storyline about a romance that doesn't end up working and just harms the plot even more than it would if it didn't have that storyline, more on that later though. Onto characters now, Maika and Dino essentially have similar sorts of personalities I feel but that doesn't mean their personalities are any good all things considered, they're just a bit too cliché and boring for my liking. The rest however are pretty diverse. Kaho was a bit 'eh' at first but became a lot more tolerable and likable near the end, a really decent character. Mafuyu is OK, feel like she does lack a lot of personality other than the imouto personality she has at work though. Miu is pretty one-dimensional from my standpoint, not much else to say. Akizuki is also like this, although there is some development for him later on in the anime. Hideri is actually kind of decent too and would have been better a lot earlier on in the anime I feel. Although since we're on the subject of characters, time to revisit that romance storyline because as it turns out, Dino has a crush on Maika, which may not sound so bad if it wasn't for the fact that Dino is 26 and Maika is 16... that... just disgusts me. I've dealt with problematic stuff before but that takes the cake... sorry, that time it was unintentional... I don't know why the creator of this thought that weaving that storyline into this slice-of-life was a good thing to do because once you know about it, you can't help but feel sickened, and rather than giving significant substance, it just gives a reason for this show to exist. At the end of the day, without those two, this show would just have zero substance... Being disappointed and sickened by this show's plot and character is not a good feeling. However, I will say this, the art is alright, pretty much what you would expect from A-1, standard stuff, not much to say... I say that a lot, don't I? Wonder if I hammered in the point yet? Anyways, the OP, I find personally to be REALLY GOOD... sure, it has lost its charm due to it being an old meme but as a genuine track, it's really catchy. ED not as much, but it's pretty neat I suppose. The show also has... some comedic factor but it's a shame that it has to repeat jokes every so often in every episode, if they were just singular jokes, I feel like I would have enjoyed it a lot than I did. Don't get me wrong, there is something to enjoy here, it's just not as present as I would have liked it to be. So overall, BLEND-S at its best is just an 'eh' show that just exists merely off a smidge of its comedy, a decent cast of characters, and an OP that is memorable... but at its very worst, it's a show that thrives off a plot that revolves around a relationship with a 10 year age gap which is disgusting to even think about. An honest 4/10 makes sense to me here, since really there's nothing special about this anime at its core. It really just exists for sake of existing, is a way you could put it. It's not bad by any means but, to be honest, it isn't all too good either. Low C-tier to high D-tier anime.
In my point of view, Blend-S is a cute anime which you can watch when you have free time. It’s not an action anime, it is just for enjoyment. The anime is designed very cute and yes, you got it, we can see many maids! So, let’s get started: #1. Story The anime "Blend-S" is about a maid cafe. We follow the main lead "Maika" through the whole story. She get to know the boss from the cafe, who want to make her a maid since she is so cute. Each of the maids have a different personality there like Tsundere, Sister, etc. img300(https://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000359277063-gz34z5-t500x500.jpg) This anime contains much fan service and is only for entertainment purposes (I mean, anime are just for entertaining purposes, but in some anime you can learn some new stuff). For the story, it doesn't really have much story like it seems in my opinion. You just see the maids at work or in their free time. #2. Characters The anime focusses a lot on the characters (since there is no plot) which are very cute and funny. We see how Maika tries to smile but fails for example or just the big nosebleed from the boss. Through the story we can see some small changes on the characters, which make them more realistic. Our Maika got the role as "Sadistic" in the cafe which is totally not like her appeariance. But as she struggles to smile, her face got all crumbled up and it looks like she is glaring at us! img300(https://images7.alphacoders.com/881/thumb-1920-881197.jpg) The other character which I will mention in here is Hideri Kanzaki. Hideri plays the role as a "surprise" in the cafe. I really was a bit curious why surprise at first, when I only saw the intro. ~!He is a boy!!! (Screaming allowed here)!~ But despite that fact, Hideri is a very lively character like the other maids, who all help Maika to grow into her role. #3. Entertainment I want to add a point in here, the entertainment part. The anime is quite cute an very happy. Lively characters guaranteed and fun points too. For my personal opinion I think there should be less nosebleed. img300(https://c.tenor.com/7g1q_DqqpxMAAAAC/blend-s-nosebleed.gif) It did entertain me that much, that I thought about why not try being a maid in a cafe too, sadly there are not that many cafe who does that. The length of the anime is well chosen too. I think if the anime would have been any longer, it would have been just boring. Some relaxing, short anime as a snack, that's the perfect discribtion for this one xD #4. Art / Animation / Soundtrack I really liked the art and animation. The art is the one I definetely like. It is just smooth and cute and adds up well with the animation. Some parts where the story is a bit exaggerated is thanks to the animation very funny. img300(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/CarefulEmptyJerboa-max-1mb.gif) I really liked the soundtrack too since it is lively and catchy, but I won't hear it in my daily life. Also it gives an overview of the characters, which I really liked. youtube(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izkl0TP9QD0) Listen to it, if you have some free time! #5. Conclusion In the end, story + characters + entertainment + art / animation / soundtrack = 7.5/10! I think it was nice to watch a relaxing anime for some time off. Relaxing your soul with pretty maids lol. Still some minus points because of too much nosebleed. It was funny at some point, but gets annoying if it's too much and that was the point here. img300(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/EcstaticMetallicHerculesbeetle-size_restricted.gif)
__This review will contain spoilers, and not all are marked in the spoiler tag. The sections are divided into _Animation_, _Characters_, _Entertainment_, and _storyline___ Blend-S, well--how can I even describe it-- it has no basic plot. Like every other SoL, obviously. It's just some cute girls working at a cafe by the name of "Stile", where all the waitresses are basically given a "Trope"/"Persona" to play while at work.
- Animation - 8/10
Now the animation was actually good, it was smooth, (pretty much expected of A1 studios, if you’ve seen their other works.) It's bright, and vibrant, not _too_ much either, the color shades are pleasing to eyes, absolutely perfect for a Slice Of Life, OP was wonderful, and ED was okay, not that bad. Though in my opinion, the characters’ tropes could’ve been done better, I won’t really criticize much here. ~~~img250(https://c.tenor.com/VmeaasGLYlUAAAAM/chistoso-raro.gif)~~~
Characters - 6/10
Characters are in fact quite lively. There are many characters with different tropes; ~~~img250(https://c.tenor.com/X9azUJdbog0AAAAM/blend-s-anime.gif)~~~ Apparently, every character is completely opposite from their Job persona, for example, let’s take our main character-- __Maika Sakuranomiya__, she’s quite a tranquil, light-hearted, innocent character, who is given the exact opposite persona because of her eyes, which (as described by the anime) has a very sadistic look. She unintentionally slips into her “Sadistic” persona, which, well, people (generally customers but sometimes it may vary) enjoy. Then, we have; __Mafuyu Hoshikawa__, she plays the “Little sister” role, which requires her to be cheerful and well--y’know--little sister type(?) Just elaborate it yourself, but in reality, she's a college student, and is often found composed but mature. __Kaho Hinata__ who plays the “Tsundere” role, she’s in fact lively and a good character when she’s not in her persona. (despite me assuming she’d be absolutely boring and annoying) __Kouyou Aikizuki__, well he does not really play any character, he’s the cook but I’ll admit, he has a good potential as a character. Ah yes, finally we have the so-called “Best girl” I mean, the “Cute Idol” Persona which is played by __Hideri Kanzaki__ ~!it was genuinely hard for me to accept Hideri was a boy and not a girl like wtf-!~ To be honest, Blend-S is just based on character tropes, which was done well but, in my opinion; I reckon __Dino/manager’s__ character could’ve been done better.
- Entertainment - 6/10
Blend-S definitely has some fun/comedy scenes throughout the show, but emphasis on some. The humour is okay, but the base behind the humour is disgusting. Look, I’d be completely fine if The Manager, who apparently is __26__ (Dino) was not hitting on a literal __16__ year old. I believe that even some characters had noticed it, and they actually took action(s), but eventually even that was toned down after some episodes. I mean, _was that age gap really necessary for comedy/ audience entertainment?_ and, some good jokes are literally overused throughout. ~~~img250(https://c.tenor.com/mKX_7m0GsVAAAAAM/anime-blends.gif)~~~
Storyline - 6/10.
Some girls working in a cafe, where they have to play tropes, I must say, despite Blend-S not having a constant plot, it definitely had potential to be one of the best the genre could offer. Maybe, if the age gap was lessened, and jokes actually had a structure, this anime _could’ve_ been a real win. Introducing new characters every few episodes was a good thing you could say, or I might’ve just dropped it because of the overused plot, but some things here and there, despite being newly introduced, are also easily forgotten! It was slightly hinted that Kaho Hinata and Kouyou Akizuki had a bit of romantic tension between them (if not then I may have just misunderstood?), but that was soon dissolved
There’s not really much to say about Blend-S though, it’s just an average Slice Of Life which is mixed with CGDCT, if you’d like a SoL with some maids working in a cafe, has a romantic tension(?) between 2 characters who apparently have a 10 year age gap, also has littleeee bit of overused stuff and wholesomeness sprinkled on top, then Blend-S is just recommended for you :D
~~~img1000(https://gonzonyan.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/blend-s-full-2196833.jpg)~~~ When is it the best time to watch an anime with cute girls in maid outfits parodying adorable anime tropes? Anytime. Whether they can be enjoyable to watch or not is anyone’s prerogative. But how often do we get these shows? Entirely too often, in my opinion. With that said, when one of them clicks, they become a worthwhile, laugh-out-loud experience. Blend S proved to be the funniest slice of life anime of 2017. It comes down to the jokes, characters, comedic situations, and dialogue. These aspects meld together successfully to make an enjoyable anime that pulls off even the most stereotypical jokes that have become a staple in anime of this nature to the point of mockery. So how do each of these four aspects work great with each other? ~~~img1000(https://gonzonyan.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/blends-ep2-scr1.jpg)~~~ For starters, the jokes are very quirky and over-the-top. If you aren’t a fan of that style of humor, then Blend S may prove to be difficult to muster. It isn’t incredibly over-the-top like Seto no Hanayome or, more recently, Himouto Umaru-chan. It’s over-the-top when it needs to be. Whenever the animation switches from the standard designs of the characters to the dis-formed, chibi-like art style, that is where the comedy shines brightly. Thanks to its hilarious-looking art style and great performances by the main cast, most of the jokes hit than miss in every which way. A few times, they repeat the same jokes, and they do not necessarily hit as hard as they did the first time, but they don’t completely sour the experience too much. The characters each have a distinct characteristic that gives them a unique feel to one another. Sure they aren’t anything new to see, but Blend S knows this and plays around with these stereotypes for us to laugh at and marvel at how it treats them. However, they don’t just treat them as stereotypes and nothing more. That would make them seem hollow and uninteresting. They still have a bit of depth to them in terms of how they portray their distinct quirks with each episodic theme they are put into. All of the voice actors play a significant role in this success. The biggest highlight of the cast would have to be Azumi Waki as Maika. She can portray a female character with a darling personality without it being too sugary for some, with the dark, sadistic side to counteract it to balance it out; hopefully, she will get a ton of more lead roles after this one. ~~~img1000(https://gonzonyan.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/aenjlm.jpg)~~~ While each character holds themselves up tremendously, what sells this show significantly is the chemistry between them. It is always a blast to watch an episode and see what kind of things they will say to one another or what type of situation one gets into and how the others will react to it. The dialogue plays a part in this success and also comedic timing. There have been times when I went crazy with laughter at what characters say to each other and their reactions. Especially with the character, Dino, who is played masterfully by Tomoaki Maeno, who you can tell is having a blast playing as him. Whenever Dino and Maika are on-screen together, it almost always ends with someone having a cramp from hysterical laughing. I have mentioned before how art design and animation play a huge role in magnifying the show's humor. Looking at it beyond that, it’s a relatively simple-looking anime. Nothing stands out as anything eye-catching to write home about. Nevertheless, simplicity does not always mean a negative in some cases. Especially regarding the slice of life shows which can be limited to how you can animate them. What does out is how beautiful the colors are in the background and characters. All of the characters have a great look and make them shine to grab your attention. ~~~img1000(https://gonzonyan.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/efregf.jpg)~~~ A feel-good anime is something anyone would love to see now and again. Blend S is one that I think fits that description accurately. There is no tough melodrama involved, no violence, no sharp conflict, and no significant threat looming in the shadows. Just an anime, you can pop up at any time and feel good the following day. Ain’t nothing wrong with that. Grade: A-
